The graphics, you can zoom in and see all the details, the superb lighting; audio is absolutely mind-blowing, from the voice acting to the little sounds like the friction on the material of Snake's suit, and the slick menu beeps. I have no problem with the cutscenes. It's the gameplay itself that just doesn't feel very polished. I found the animations rather poor, and the voice acting cheesy. I think people are so amazed by the cutscenes that they forget that there is actually a game to be played. It does a lot, from stealth to action to shooter, but it doesn't do any of it very well. Again, my opinion. Fanboys, refrain from the incredible urge to call me all sorts of obscenities.

The narrative is one of the best ever seen in a vg, but the stealth elements aren't as solid as a game like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and the shooter elements aren't as strong as many 3rd Person shooters. If you take away the story and cutscenes, it's a rather mediocre mash of genres. IGN, Gamespot, they all ate the hype, and the story.

despite what bethesda says, fallout3 is oblivion with guns, that is simply undeniable. the only new/interesting features added were the VATS system and the gore explosion, which loses its charm when you get to the point where enemies blow up no matter how you hit them MGS4 took the stealth/action genre to a different place by adding a very sophisticated movement and combat system. Games should be judged on what is new to the genre, Isn't that what separates most games from Madden?
