I would love to play the bass flute... we have way too many flutes in orchestra, is it possible to rent these? Because I know i can NOT afford this amazing instrument...
I played the (normal) flute for 10 years. Never really had an "ear" for music, but tried anyway.! I so love the sound of the flute (thanks Mozart for that!)
just discovered the existance of the ALTO flute today, browsing in the classified ads.
YOUTUBE is the best for quickly discovering some song of an unknown artist, and in this case, the sound of the ALTO.
wonderful performance. I am going to look at your profile and see if there are more of you playing.!
@rhyfelwrDuw It shouldn't be that hard if you can play the C flute. Maybe the flute is to blame for being out of adjustment. The Bass or Contra-bass flutes require some technique adjustments and more practice though.
My camp director at Litchfield Jazz Camp, saxaphonist Don Braden, played one of these for us. He played Wayne Shorter's ballad "Infant Eyes" and this flute sounds outstanding
What is the lowest note in concert pitch on this instrument? I'm trying really hard to find an instrument that I won't give up on! but I don't wanna throw away my music. I can transpose it to whatever instrument, but I have to play it with my ensemble without transposing all their music too. I play the soprano clarinets now. My sister plays the soprano flute, and I noticed her fingering is a mirror image of mine =) I wish I could stick with one instrument, and maybe I can with the flute.
Hmmm, well, it makes logical sense that it would be concert G since it's a G instrument and the lowest note on the C Soprano Flute is a C, but oh well. My family doesn't want me to play any sort of flute. My sister already plays the Soprano flute, and everybody's mad at me for wanting to quit the clarinet, so I guess I won't make the switch as much as I'd like to, which is a lot!
If you like the alto flute, look for Hank Mancini's "More Music from Peter Gunn", recorded about 50 years ago! The music still sounds fresh. Mancini was one of the first to use the alto flute in pop music, and in this album uses a four man alto flute section on some tunes, in unison and in harmony. Gorgeous sound! The album also features the only alto flute/piccolo chase on record!
I think alto flutes are what the general flute sound should be. Just beautimus and round and dark. I still wonder, what part would an alto play? The sax part of something (like a band piece) or a transposed regular flute part?
I don' t think there is a suitable part in concert band for alto flute unless the player is insanely good at transposing on the spot. It's pitched in G so no part fits it.
Someone should start writing band songs with alto, bass, and contra flute parts it would make sense the clarinets have The Eb, Bb, Eb Alto, Bb Bass, Eb Contra, and Bb Contra. Why shouldent the other woodwinds (besides saxahones) have there family included?
Ohmygod you are so good! Anyway, I currently play the Tenor Sax, but I want to switch to flute, and the alto and bass flute are both so pretty! The regular flute is too high pitched for my liking, but the alto flute is to die for!
Bass flutes arnt that hard to find actually its contra flutes.
My school has 2 altos and 2 basses and at my friends school in a band of 37 they have a school bass flute and contra bass clarinet. The contras are rare because theres almost no music for them and there expensive.
well...this is the first time I've heard an alto flute!!! it sounds so much richer! Utterly beautiful!

What is this piece? They used to play this on the radio in the mornings when I was a kid. I loved this piece, but never found out what it's called.

does it play the same fingerings as the flute?

@yesmynameismy Yes. It's a G instrument, so sounds a perfect fifth lower than it's written.

Are the fingerings the same as a classic flute? I'm not sure the name but like the most common flute people play.
LavenderTear 2 years ago
No. It's deeper, but not by a whole octave like the bass flute. The alto flute is set so that the c fingering on a normal flute is a g.

The alto flute I just learned it at the perfect frequency to make my computer speakers buzz like crazy LOL.
Great tone, Love it!

@nejihyuga665 They are excerpts from Bach's Partita in A minor for Solo Flute. Search for it using Google Images and you may find some sheet music.

people are already writing for alto and bass flutes for concert band.
But very few groups are performing them for lack of proper equipment (e.g. the actual instruments themselves).
