All the time people take art from sites like deviantart and make a slideshow together with a pirated song. I think what you're doing Mike is fantastic thing. The average Joe does not know small details about copyrighting laws and how they've changed. If you keep this up, I think more people will begin to think a little bit more about how the media screws with our basic laws and rights.

In England, the works of Shakespeare actually were copyrighted for *hundreds* of years by a single publisher. Eventually law changes caused them to fall out of copyright (in the late 1800s, I believe).

I think 50 year copyrights are extreme, though 28 sounds good to me.
This is an important issue, but another important issue is how rampant copyright infridgement is today, especially online. All the time people take art from sites like deviantart and make a slideshow together with a pirated song. As an artist who has had my art stolen before, I can say how frustrating it is- especially when its so hard to get anything done about it. Artists rights are getting smaller & smaller & are ignored.

Sure, some people who own them get TOO protective and end up using them to bully the fans of their work but in the long run, it's very important. Disney for example NEEDS to keep their rights to Mickey Mouse.

Did you see the children shows they made in the middle east involving a guy in a Mickey Mouse costume telling pretty much telling children to hate anyone who doesn't follow their religion? (It's on youtube. Take a look) Without proper copyrights, anyone could do that. Also, without copyrights we'd be like Hungry or India. Being able to making movies where Spider-Man kidnaps Lois Lane and threatens to rape her on the Death Star (I'm not kidding, this is a real Hungarian movie)

BTW, next you should talk about the prezident's money law where if you have a certain income and you have to be taxed and that money is given to those who don't work, making them become dependant of this tax. a relitive is working a little less just so he doen't get taxed as much. Your understanding of understanding of those laws are evidently a bit flawed. You cannot claim that work as your own but you can most definitely quote or refer to that information if you give the owner credit. Additionally, One cannot apply said laws to actual people. the people aren't covered only concepts presented are.

Well, copyright laws have showed their signs of aging in digital age. Since now it's too easy to break copyright law, it is a breeding ground to copyright bullies (mainly larger companies) and copyright trolls (those who use laws to cause havoc to those who they don't like). Something must be changed soon.

I had an email from Youtube saying that one of my videos was a breach of copyright and would be allowed to stay, however they were now putting advertising on it. The video in question is all my own work. The backing music is Chopin.
I wrote to rumblefish who they say informed them of the breach of copyright. Today the ad is gone. Rumblefish wrote to me to say what they had done was in error and that their method was not accurate...
How many videos are these people getting revenue from?

We have eternal property in everything else. I don't see any good reason to make an exception for intellectual property. I think it's a matter of basic respect to let someone own what he labored to create, until he voluntarily relenquishes control. And yes to allow him to make as much money as possible on it. what you people don't seem to get is that "anti-copyright" isn't just about getting free shit. this worldwide movement is not just millions of freeloaders acting together. that kind of underestimation of our cause is exactly why huge organizations the MPAA and RIAA have failed to stop file-sharing. A civil, orderly, and productive society is one where individuals are allowed to control the produce of their labor - where others are prohibited from taking what others produce without their consent. One irony is that Disney's properties are based mostly on old stories, myths and fairy tales. Without the public domain on those stories, they would not have the company they have today. Disney's just greedy because they know they've run out of creative juice.
