@wardog1967 Of course there's good music today! There's more music in the world than what you see on TV, ie: Kanye West and co. Theres plenty of great music making still going on, you're missing out if you close your mind to everything that happened after 1984.
@iGotSpaceLikeNASA Don't be ridiculous...who said I was closing my mind to everything after 1984? This video is merely to show what some of today's R & B artists have used as their inspiration; at no point does it say in my description that is is the definitive style. I have issue with people who post on here telling others to stop comparing eras. I assure you, my tastes are wide and varied.
Oh how I miss the time of truly good and creative music, clear of immorality and simply about the exploration of sound and having fun. As one poster said already, this clip is flat out epic.
@TheDragon1 I agree. There might be some stuff out there today that is just OK...the 80's era was truly experimental daring. Coming out of the 70's where everything was pretty much stock standard with a few twists, musicians like Herbie Hancock exploited the new technology and created something vibrant, fresh and still copied to this day. VERY EPIC. Cheers & Peace.
Soul Train with Host Don Cornelius (sp?) was a groundbreaking dance show for any teenager watching tv in the 1970s. It was electrifying. It does not surprise me that the moonwalk (know as the backslide) was introduced on this show. Back in the days before technology grabbed the reins of all the free time teens had we used to spend our time practicing disco dance moves. Those were some of the best times of my life.
I remember watching this as a young kid with my friends. We thought he had a bunch of automatons on stage with him. It shocked us when they climbed up and started break dancing.
I remember watching this when I was 9 years old and it blew me away. I've been wondering ever since if the dancer could be the Rocksteady Crew... anyone knows?
@COINSINPOCKET I was under the impression that Steve Daniels, (the Afro-American dancer on the left at the end of the performance) passed away some time ago.
One of the greatest Grammy performances. I remember watching this and no one was expecting the robots to be real. Totally thought it was from his video. Brilliant.
@000MidnightSun Oddly enough, I was think thinking the same thing the other night when I saw them! They aren't even a patch on what they were in the 80's.
Almost like cirque d soleil...a little creepy with the masks on the dancers but I love the moonwalk...was he influenced by Michael Jackson or the other way around? True, this is brilliant.
@margsyn The dancers themselves might have taken Michael Jackson's 'moonwalk' (and did really well too, might I add!); but, I'm not so sure that Herbie Hancock's music was influenced by Michael Jackson's. Herbie Hancock was/is a well known and successful musician in his own right.
Michael Jackson didn't start the moonwalk; he got it from Jeffrey Daniel, a noted dancer one the TV Show "Soul Train" and former member of the group, "Shalamar". He didn't even call it the "moonwalk"; he called it the "backslide". At the time it was also known as the "spacewalk". I haven't seen the video on here yet, but there is a movie of an American tap dancer doing the "moonwalk/spacewalk/backslide" back in the 1940s! Great dance move, but borrowed. . .
i watched this live from home....was caught up by the music, the scratching...BUT... when the guys started breakin & poppin....ahhh yeeeahhh!!! we (my fam & I) were screaming, jumping up to pop and break as well!!! truly inspirational. if you're a music lover of any sort you hear the fusion of so much here and can appreciate it!!!
@BIGPIMPINUPDANYC He says words like "Don't stop it" & "Rockit". His voice is filtered through the synth to sound more robotic. You can even see his lips move when he does say them. Cheers.
Men!!!! What a year!!!!! I remember that year 1984...Was so magic!!! i have 9...I miss that music!!! that cartoons...that series...that toys!!!!!! What a years!!!!!
great performance ,but i wish there was more talent applied by this guy. He's standing up there like he's ruling the world with that synth, but the part is relatively simple.
@rysterryn I'm not sure that he had to do much else. He wasn't known for his stage antics/performances, rather he's better known for his music. The dancers are more of an 'addition'. Have a look at the original video clip; you'll know what I mean.
@rysterryn: I must realize know - as a great connaisseur of DEVO - that he obviously stole a lot of concepts and ideas from Devo (in this case - also concerning Future Shock as a whole). He doesn´t have to admit it - rock´n´roll IS about (good) stealing partly....bu i just realized that. Very clever ass !
In the meantime lotsa Kraftwerk "fans" here on YT insult DEVO as a "punk" version of the one and only "Autobahns". Kraftwerk are regarded as being very boring by many in Germany.
All so called rappers owe their celebrity to this man. Herbie is a Genius! The video was was revolutionary. Herbie had the foresight to hook up with DST and add "credibility" to hip-hop in it's infancy. It introduced "mainstream" America to what we were doing in the Projects and streets of NYC every weekend; in the parks, block partys, etc. Herbie won the Grammy that night, but it's amazing henever won for all his Jazz compilations prior. (Chameleon, Cantelope Island, Watermellon Man) WTF!
Everything about this performance is perfect in every way. i was 5 years old when this aired and i remember it well. so hard to believe this was 1983, so ahead of its time. a true classic!!
Thank you, wardog1967 for uploading this clip from the Grammys & also for sharing comments throughout this thread. Most people who upload videos don't stick around to comment & respond to others' comments.
This Grammy performance was outstanding and Herbie Hancock's "Rock It" tune is a hip-hop classic. But Rock It can also be considered jazz. After all, Herbie Hancock is a jazz musician. Google The Dozens: Hip-Hop Meets Jazz for other examples of hip-hop/jazz recordings. Thanks again. Peace!

I never got a chance to see this the first time, I was 8 when this happened, and had a bedtime of 8 pm because of school. Reading an interview with the dj D. St, he was touching upon this moment and it made me want to see it. Thanks for sharing. Loved every second of it.
@jyoungjyoung1 Hang on, buddy...I was saying that to guy who got picky about what year this was in. I also think these were brilliant times. Otherwise, why would I post the video?
@NickInDetroit Dude, this IS from 1984. Michael Jackson was in the audience, this is when he won the record 8 Grammys. You jumped on wardog1967 for no damn reason, you are the one who is wrong.
This was absolutely brilliant, stands the test of time! It was such a "game-changing" performance that the master innovator, Michael Jackson, whom was in the audience for the show, is wowed. You can see him at the conclusion of the performance. The crowd went wild.
This only happened at the Grammy's a few times that I can remember: Isaac Hayes and the Shaft live performance, Michael Jackson's first moonwalk, etc.
This was the first time I've seen and heard of Herbie Hancock and Rockit. The music video came second for me. Since Michael Jackson won most of the Grammys, I wonder if this performance stole the show.
@van76 It did steal the show. I watched it when I was 12 years old, and have never forgotten about it. Michael Jackson did the moonwalk to "Beat It" live at the Grammys the year before ( 1983 ) . So this wasn't the first time America saw this kind of thing, just that Herbie did it in such a classy way. When the mannequins came to life was so profound for me at the time and amazingly still is. Thanx for posting. Peace out 80's.
I actually remember watching this live on TV when it aired back then. It was epic then, and is still epic now. Seeing as how this still stands up, it really shows how music was so much better and original then vs. now.
My God how I loved the 80's and all the music!!! This is back when real artists performed real music not like today's so-called fluff!! Thanks for sharing haven't seen this in decades!! ;)
This performance was a big bang . you know that, how many kids were watching this at tv in the same time I was and now they are directing the music today? How many of us wanting to be djs after this, better thatn this, battle djs, after this? I am so fucking proud to be a dj, I am so glad to watched this show at home when I was 10 years old. I remember, I couldnt sleep wishing to be a dj, wow, what a great childhood i got.
Look how Latoya,Brooke Shields and other luminaries was Shocking by a Electro Hip Hop thunder via Herbie and Grandmixer DST (one of the Bambaataa's Zulu Nation DJs)
I often watch this clip for POWER in my hair extension game! Thanks so much!
I just noticed MJ pointing as he gave props to the performance! I remember my uncles would play basketball at the jacksons home in encino back in the day, so I would guess that MJ was remenbering my uncle on stage..Pretty Cool foo sho!
1984, simmons drums...powerfull bass, 2x4 ryhthm and 144 pulses per minute on the song, Sinclaviers keyboards...That's techno today. Herbie Hankcock put some funk on that...
this performace brought break dancing to main stream america and to the whole world for that matter, prior to this performance breakdancing was only seen with inner city youth in just a few city's and their surrounding area, alot of people never thanked herbie for bringing it to the masses!
Wow .....Remembered it like it was yesterday. I was 14 at the time and till this day it's still number one in in the grammy awards in my book. Thanx wardog1967 for the memories of the mid 80's.
Hi ,Wardog1967 I was told he was the one in the bed...However I think he was the one standing on the left doing the robot??? I was young when this came out but my family said he was in the bed? IDK..But he was my favorite uncle!!! A real cool guy!! I tried to look up some of his work I found 2 on Silver Spoons with Pearl Bailey he's on both episodes..I wish I could remember his break dance name..darn I do remember his best friend was boogaloo shrimp he was at his funeral service...R.I.P.
Hi Divastyleshair, I'm sorry to hear of his passing. When I was a teenager (a LONG time ago!) me and my friends all tried to copy these four guys wit the same routine...with "moderate" success. You have a great pedigree there. Hope the talent runs in your family. Cheers & R.I.P STEVE DANIELS.
Hi Wardog, I've been trying to search for more info on youtube I just realized his friend has a old school pop lock youtube
under compton pop locker his friend is boogaloo aka darrel cooley it's not much info tho..except I found a 2008 youtube on him poppin at a park..Gosh let me know if you get any info, thanks
OMG!!!! That's my Uncle " STEVE DANIELS" on the left " R.I.P. " I grew up watching him break dance!!! I wish he was alive to see how far his dreams have come!! I LOVE YOU UNCLE STEVE!!!
Especially for '84 this looks fantastic... Actually this performance got Mixmaster Mike (Beasty Boys DJ) into scratching records! I saw this in the "Scratch" documentary...
Actually he was ORIGINALLY...DST when he did Rockit with Herbie (Google that!!). Later on, he changed it to DXT. I was a former NYC DJ in the 80's and 90's. Have all DST's stuff on vinyl. Youtube the title 'Crazy Cuts' DST.
Realmente esta performance es maravillosa. No me canso de verla una y otra vez. Grandes recuerdos de una gran epoca musical. Herbie...lo mejor de aquellos grammys.
wardog u hit the nail right on the head... absolutely brilliant!!!! somehow i missed this (or don't remember watching) 25 years ago.. thanks a million 4 the sharing of this. SHARING being the key word..
To be honest, that's the only level of quality I was able to get that video on. I searched high and low to get it; it took me ages to find it. Help yourself, dude.
me encanta y yo con mis 41 años en mi juventud aprendi a bailar asi con este video. encontrarlo aca me trajo hermosos recuerdos gracias por subirlo y que lo podamos disfrutar
I respect your opinion, dude. DXT put the scratch in it. Herbie Hancock could've played that on a sample track...without DXT...Break dancing and hip hop music went hand in hand back then. All good.
Back then I was listening to the new breakdancing/rapping/scratching..etc. I was 15ish or so. I had heard "Rock It" but never seen the video. I watched this the night it aired but had no idea about the robotics involved. As I watched this on t.v. I was BLOWN AWAY by the "robots" coming to life and BREAKDANCING!!! It shocked everyone in the audience which you can tell by the gasps and yells in the background.
Not only is this a great video. For me, this is one of the reasons YouTube became great: seeing rare stuff, kindly shared by generous individuals. How else am I or anyone else going to get to watch these classic moments in time from 25 years or more ago? I watched this when I was a kid and now I can share it with my kids. Fantastic. But now, copyright is killing YouTube. Sharing is not necessarily stealing! Thanks, wardog1967.
I'm 38 years old (I was 1y by then}}9 and I still remember that performance , In fact I've been waiting to see again this video for so long. Thank do much wardog1967 for uploading this video and thank youtube for make this possible.
If it wasn't, it was certainly ONE of the first times...Public Enemy perhaps? But yeah, I agree...very simple, very tasteful and very talented. Pity TV didn't give Herbie Hancock a fair go.

I actually remember watching this live on TV when it aired back then. It was epic then, and is still epic now. Seeing as how this still stands up, it really shows how music was so much better and original then vs. now.

1984, simmons drums...powerfull bass, 2x4 ryhthm and 144 pulses per minute on the song, Sinclaviers keyboards...That's techno today. Herbie Hankcock put some funk on that...
We need that creativity today...

this performace brought break dancing to main stream america and to the whole world for that matter, prior to this performance breakdancing was only seen with inner city youth in just a few city's and their surrounding area, alot of people never thanked herbie for bringing it to the masses!

Divastyleshair 2 years ago
Hi Divastyleshair, I'm sorry to hear of his passing. When I was a teenager (a LONG time ago!) me and my friends all tried to copy these four guys wit the same routine...with "moderate" success. You have a great pedigree there. Hope the talent runs in your family. Cheers & R.I.P STEVE DANIELS.
wardog1967 2 years ago
Hi Wardog, I've been trying to search for more info on youtube I just realized his friend has a old school pop lock youtube
under compton pop locker his friend is boogaloo aka darrel cooley it's not much info tho..except I found a 2008 youtube on him poppin at a park..Gosh let me know if you get any info, thanks

The guy that climbs out of the bed is your uncle? Wow. Loved his work.

Especially for '84 this looks fantastic... Actually this performance got Mixmaster Mike (Beasty Boys DJ) into scratching records! I saw this in the "Scratch" documentary...

That breakdown is so incredible. The drama of the robots getting up is awesome. How can you NOT move to that?!?!?!

I know...the audience reaction when they get up is awesome.
wardog1967 2 years ago
Actually he was ORIGINALLY...DST when he did Rockit with Herbie (Google that!!). Later on, he changed it to DXT. I was a former NYC DJ in the 80's and 90's. Have all DST's stuff on vinyl. Youtube the title 'Crazy Cuts' DST.
kaiart 2 years ago
Actually it is DXT. Google it!!

BTW peoples, it's "Grandmixer DST", not 'DXT'. Just a little FYI

Realmente esta performance es maravillosa. No me canso de verla una y otra vez. Grandes recuerdos de una gran epoca musical. Herbie...lo mejor de aquellos grammys.

To be honest, that's the only level of quality I was able to get that video on. I searched high and low to get it; it took me ages to find it. Help yourself, dude.

You are welcome :)) Glad you enjoyed it. :))
wardog1967 2 years ago
I respect your opinion, dude. DXT put the scratch in it. Herbie Hancock could've played that on a sample track...without DXT...Break dancing and hip hop music went hand in hand back then. All good.
wardog1967 2 years ago

Thanks, wardog1967.
anthtan 2 years ago 22
You're welcome. I agree totally about seeing the rare stuff too.

this is such a simple beautiful piece of music,...isn't this the first time turntables/scratching was shown to a national audience?
stillwaterseven 2 years ago 3
If it wasn't, it was certainly ONE of the first times...Public Enemy perhaps? But yeah, I agree...very simple, very tasteful and very talented. Pity TV didn't give Herbie Hancock a fair go.
