LOL. have you seen this guy play this year? he's given up the most catches and most yards in the NFL this year. he's been the most targeted CB in the league this year.
he is not the next revis. not even close. too many of you, including mr timmins, jumped the gun. played well last year in a ton of zone heavy coverages. was asked to play man to man much more this year and could not handle it. just like he was roasted in man to man last year vs harvin and wallace.
devin mccourty is a shutdown corner period. he intercepted 7 balls and cause 3 fumbles.. thats 10 turnover coming from just this guy. hes amazing i accepts i was shocked at first but now i could not be happier
That pick turned out pretty good................ Guy is a stud..... Belichick has done a great job with him. He's only going to get better. Lets hope there is a season to find out
Mayock had this dude in nickle coverage, gunning on kicks and returning punts. Devin heard this. He went out and damn near won the DROY. He was tested by the Bungles on the first play of the season matched up with Owens and broke up the pass...not bad for a nickle back, gunner on special teams. Kudos to Devin on his commitment to his craft.
The rest of the league should fear the Patriots Secondary (Man its been a LONG while since I've felt good about saying that) but now its true. A very Young and talented Secondary behind 3rd year player Patrick Chung 2nd Year Phenom Devin McCourty a pretty solid 5th year Saftey in Brandon Meriweather and the veteran Leigh Bodden. That is a solid secondary right there and if anything it may just get better (assuming that the lockout ends)
Also, it is expected that guys who play nickel corner from time to time will have more tackles, which Charles Woodson plays a lot and Darrelle Revis lines-up in the nickel position at times. So, a corner who play a cover 2 scheme a lot or lines-up as a nickel corner should be expected to have some tackles. Like I said before, if the corner isn't playing a lot of cover 2 scheme or nickel, and he has 80 tackles...it's time to find a new outside linebacker.
Darrelle Revis stats looked very much like McCourty's his first year, but his tackles fell off year by year. He didn't even have a lot of tackles last year when people were hollering about how many times he was targeted. Truly, not all solo tackles indicate that a corner was beat, because some teams play a lot of cover 2, but it can loosely indicate how many times a DB have given up a catch, because most solo tackles are on receivers. Too many tackles can also indicate it's time a new OLB.
@LastCalltoBoogie dude mccourtey had a better year than revis did. i would argue that revis made the pro bowl based on reputation last year. he held out, missed 3 or 4 games with a bum hamstring, and didn't even half a pick all year. mccourtey had 7 as a rookie, which is more than revis has had in any season
PD are an indication of how often a player gets thrown to. Revis last year was the most targeted CB and thus had monster number of PD. McCourty's PD numbers dropped once people started to throw less to him and focused on guys like butler and arrington playing the other side. Haden is probably thrown at more playing on a crappy browns team and thus get more chances on defense. I wouldn't just simply look at stats straight up. Either way DMC and Haden are beast. Kyle wilson on the other hand...
@iamsobored Pass deflections indicate how many times you made a play on the ball when the ball was thrown your way. If a corner was thrown at 100 times, but he deflected 33 of the balls, allowed 35 completions, and the rest were under or over thrown because of good coverage...thiis equates to a corner having a quiet year the following year. Anyways, Devin McCourty had like 16 pass deflections and Haden had 18 deflection with less solo tackles, which more are Wr tackles for corners.
@LastCalltoBoogie Okay i worded my phrase weirdly. Yes i know they are the number of times they made the play and that obviously is affected by the number of times they get thrown to. I'm just saying simply look at PD and say well this dude has more is not a good judgment of a corner b/c a guy getting thrown to 100 times gets more chances to make plays and up the PD stat than a guy who gets thrown to 60 times obviously. It's like judging a corner simply on the number of int (not as bad tho).
Stats aren't a good barometer for cornerback play. Joe Haden is going to be exceptional in the Asante Samuel role as a gambling corner. McCourty has as smooth a set of hips as you have ever seen and great instincts on when to turn his head around, ballskills, great tackler. Very similar to a Champ Bailey and more complete than Haden.
@Aggies4lifedog Yeah, he just had his seventh interception this past Sunday, and he could very well finish with 10, because he's going into the playoffs. The thing that should be more of focus is that Joe didn't even start at the beginning of the season and has 6 interception with 18 pass break ups. Also, you should never judge a corner on how many tackles he has made, because some of those tackles could indicate how many times he was beat on a play.
Great pick, most corners take a few years to develop and this guy is a rookie and already looks like a top 10 corner, 6 interceptions, 2 fumbles, 81 tackles and 1 sack.
@skspikex2 Hy was going to be the nickle until Leigh Bodden got hurt, Injuries turned his rookie season into trial by fire. He learned on the fly. DROY 100%
I have to say I was pissed off when I saw this live I thought that a pass rusher was best and I was pissed at big bill, but once again belichick surprised me and proved that we got the best defender in the draft and possibly one of the best corners already he is shut down, my apologies to the hoody
I'm a big fan of how Mayock only talks about what you're getting from each kid instead of talking about how they shouldn't have gone where they did, even if he disagrees with it. Doesn't ruin the moment for the kid and that's awesome. Helps that McCourty was a great pick, but still.
guys i think we need a big play wide reciever in the up-coming draft. No disrespect to brandon tate, he's a speedster but only six foot. with oaklands 1st pick i think we can get an elite wide out. like this if u agree.
@IndyB69 aaahh i thought this out for a while. a dream draft would be peterson with our raiders pick, michael floyd with our other first rounder, akeem ayers with our panthers 2 rounder and maybe a matt light replacement.
bill knows what hes doing. all of u who wanted to see dez? next year we have the raiders pick and just a few names to throw out there for next year: a.j green, julio jones, michael floyd, jonathan baldwin
@matgylper sergio kindle is going to undergo microscopic...sumthin like that surgery on his legs...and it has to do with more blood running through his cartilage...thats why he droped..and i herd this guy can be the next Revis and the jets were planning to get him instead of wilsin..and he ran the fastest among all CBs..HE IS PHYSICAL!!
@matgylper kindle had too many health issues for bill to make him their pick. plus they will face marshall and holmes and edwards in 4 gamesif not more includinng playoffs this year. that's why they took a good corner who is quick and can defend strong fast recievers. aka marshall holmes edwards
i'm the patriots fans but i hate the way they draft year after year, this is why our reign is over. Sad thing, when i think to a guy like dez bryant who is now a cows i mean how can we miss that chance? incredible
@karlkani9 i think the patriots current philosophy is rebuilding that defense, they'll probably address the OLBs with those 3 second round picks
it's much easier to convince veteran receivers like moss, torry holt to come catch TDs from brady, not an immediate need to do it in the draft
if moss is gone soon, maybe the patriots will convince a steve smith or chad once their contracts are up, and brady will turn them into 20+ TD receivers
@tqlax21 But evrybody should agree that pass rusher is the biggest needs right now, and i dont think kindle will be available tonight for our first 2nd round pick. Maybe Ricky sapp shoul do the job, but kindle is better. And i think dez bryant was the best opportunity in first round, torry holt isnt the one we need seriously. Another thing, if the patriots wanted Mccourty, they should waited late in second to draft him, i dont think any team expect him in first or early secound round
@hbbsm713 it's starting to look like it especially now that he's considered for the rookie of the year honor. the patriots have been a great team in the last decade but they never had a shot down corner. you can make a case for Ty Law but this kid has potential to be a superstar which means Pats will have a very good defense for the coming years.
@dhom100 I dont think theres a question that Ty Law was a shutdown corner. In my opinion, a cornerback must excel in 3 areas in order to be considered a true "shut-down" corner:
- coverage
- tackling
- ball skills
Ty Law met this criteria, and thats why he owned manning. But I completely agree with you that McCourty has all the right tools to become a true shut-down corner, and the perfect coach to teach this promising student how to become one
I love it how these new yorkers keeep booing the Pats hahahaha
