this is one of my all time favorite movies, and i dont like musicals,,,,but i like this music and the comedy , lee marvin was great( howdy parson, welcome to hell) was funniest part of the movie
i covered this song..vocals ,harmonica ..kinda tom waits flavor.. lee marvin was a hardcore for real man- got shot in the ass by the japs.. most all his platoon was mowed down.. thats why he drank;; fuck anybody that that disrespect him..
"Paint your wagon" does not mean that on a literally meaning. I think it is a metaphor that means bringing home over your shoulder ... always moving your home is something you paint and change according to where you go. Paint a wagon as he says the movie is a dream, as if you paint your home ... dream of freedom ... you paint it, believe on it and always be moving. So I see on this way.
Yup-yup. If the receiving end gets it, it wasn't wasted breath. And it looks like a lot of people - to this day - get it: the atmosphere, the tone, the emotions, the message of "melancholy" we all feel sometimes.
He is amazing. It must have taken guts to sing with such a narrow range. But he surely carried the message through. Singing is not just about vocal ability - it's about expressing feelings as well. (Too bad lots of singers don't know that purring is sometimes better than yowling &howling:)
@TheMargold The hit that song right off, it has emotion to it, he obviously knew it. Any fool can sing, oh lord the radio is loaded with screamers trying to fake it.
@lanestradler Thanks but no thanks, I'd like to continue to defend myself thank you, but if you have the wagon I'll give it to my parent's, my dad might like to screw around with it, or not, free wagon right?
@lanestradler Thanks but no thanks, I'd like to continue to defend myself thank you, but if you have the wagon I'll give it to my parent's, my dad might like to screw around with it, or not, free wagon right?
We all know that Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood can't sing; that's no reason to avoid this movie. With their average voices, they become the true "every man" character in this movie, representing the feelings all viewers go through in their lives. This is a great song from a good movie. No one else could have sung this with any more feeling or talent and made it as believeable.
@peter007taylor You missed the funniest fifteen minutes in cinema. "We finally made a town just the way we wanted it, and then we went and sunk it." Definitely worth watching...repeatedly.
I have always loved this I remember when school broke up for Christmas and we had a half day at school I was 13 at the time and it was snowing outside and I got home in time to see this movie on tv and loved it I always have cosy memories of watching this movie on tv sipping hot chocolate and eating buscuits.
My dad IS Lee Marvin's character- he's been an actual cowboy (1950's Wyoming-and fought off bears), a zookeeper, painter, truck driver, theatre manager (notably the Palace Theatre in Luverne, Minnesota), minister.
I once made a recommendation to my Dad that he have "Happy Trails" played at his funeral. I have since added "Wandrin' Star" to the list, but Dad had a stroke so he isn't able to make new memories. If anyone has comment, I would like to hear them (unless your comment is something about how I shouldn't be considering my father's funeral)
Good call. It's a song that can mean a lot of things to different people and invokes a sense of freedom. I have told my family that I want the Beatles "In my LIfe" played at my funeral. If you can see the relevance of "Wanderin' Star" to your dad's life and think he'd like it, then when the time arrives, do it.
Harve Presnell has the best singing voice in this movie. I saw him in two other movies where I did not recognize him is in "Fargo" and "Saving Private Ryan" where he played General Marshall. I saw his name in the movie credits and is the only reason how I knew.
This was an excellent movie! My favorite. Who ever produced this movie knew a great deal about the California gold rush. The costumes, the saloons and its decor and even some of the people portrayed in the movie! Did you know the the nerdy character from Wooster Massachuessetts, Horace Tabor actually extisted? Horace Tabor (real name) came to the gold fields and later opened an Opera house in Sacramento.
"Home is made for comin from, for dreams of going to- which with any luck will never come true...." Love this song, Love Marvin's delivery- thanks for posting!
I have been to the actual site where the city was built. Nothing left but tall grass their used to be some remnents of the cabin where Marvin lived but thats gone now. There is a sign posted by the Oregon forest service that says" This is the site of where "Paint your wagon" was filmed. Its about 20 miles or so out of Baker City, OR
Someone posted that they filmed it just outside of MODESTO Ca.....he said he visited the set with his Mom when he was a kid and his Mom talked with Harve Presnell,
It was mostly filmed in Oregon and some in California. They actually built the small town in Oregon and demolished it when they were done. There are some concrete foundations where the bridge used to be. Its been a while since I've been up there but I'd like to go back take some pictures and see if i can find anything from the film site.
