Oh i love watching these old test reports, fram way back when, how the testers rave about the new kid on the block, and the following year there'll being saying it all again about something newer, makes I laugh !! 130bhp, umm i think thats probably all you need on the road, My gixr thou has (allegedly) 168 at the crank and f**k me it's just about the quickest thing I've ridden and I've had loads of different bikes, including Blades, GSX-R's

I've owned all 3, a '98 CBR, a ZX9B and ZX9C and currently own a 2000 R1. The CBR was the easiest to wheelie and probably the most comfortable. The R1 enjoys being on it's side more, however. Much more stable when cornering. The ZXs were simply shit. Shit motor, shit build quality, shit looks. If I had my time again, it'd be a tough choice between the Blade and R1. The R1 is a seriously good piece of kit but I'd have the Honda because it stomps the R1 to about 7krpm which is important.

Today the bike Game is dominated by Germany the bmw s1000rr is the baddest liter bike on the market following that the 2011 zx10 is right behind it as far as speed.

All the bikes are almost the same these days as far as styling but there is alot of difference mechanically!

all the 98 bikes were good for having their own persona. these conversations about style and attitude don't really apply much with bikes today... their all so much more alike now...i'd take one of each then treat them with custom paint.

ok i just looked at the dyno runs on the r1 and the 900rr the power diferance was only .4 hp so not a huge differance like there saying here there damn near the same just the looks must have been the deciding rule. cause theyre just as fast as each other lol. now i dont believe nothing but dyno numbers these guys lie threw there teeth lol

i agree the honda blade is so easy to go fast on compaired to the r1 its more comfortable. to ride and still maintains its sport bike look. i ride with my friend robby on his 99 r1 and im right there wiith him he cant pull away from me they are both about equal just look at the cbr900rr top speed it gets barried at 185 mph so i dont understand?

Strange how new TopGear is so almost totally against motorbikes and always almost talk only about cars. There should be a similar show about motorbikes. But it seems we motorbikers must always keep a low profile so to not insult the only car majority. And to not attract new laws like the 100HK limit. How about a 100HK limit on cars? There is more off them and more people die beacause of cars... I never hear about banning sportscars.

the Red an white 98 R1s are still one of the sexiest bikes ever,, not Quite as fast as my 2001 Gixx 1k,, but what a sexy lookin bike,, still fast as hell,, the poor old 900RR was way outa its league in this test,, although i love the red wht and blue 1993 RRs

@IRONSEAN7 I'll have disagree with you. I've owned many bikes (R1 99 and 2003, GSXR1000 K1 K4 K5, Z1000, SRAD750 99). The R1 1999 was as fast as the Gixxer K1. The R1 is so much easier to play with/ride. Lucky enough a friend of my bought the R1 and sometimes we swap bikes. Now I own a K8 1000.

@bikerboy674 well, you bought another gsxr1000, so u musta loved the first one you had, or you woulda bought an R1.. i always loved the R1 even though after my buddy wrecked my first bike which was an 86 VFR750, i bought a Gsxr750 which was sick.. i bought my 01 1000 after that, but now that both are gone and i would love to buy a harley cuz on a crotch rocket, ill either die or go to jail. i have to say that the GSXR750 is the most under rated sportbike. i smoked 929s all day at the dragway!

@IRONSEAN7 Man, what a B.S. All the bikes I've owned is because I could get them at a very cheap price. I've owned a lot of types. That's why I can tell you that the R1 99 as fast is as the 01 GSXR and in my opinion it handles/cornor better. We've tested them a lot on the (no speed limit) autobahn in Germany. Right now my K8 is for sale and my next will be the 09 R1

@bikerboy674 thas cool man, i wasnt tryin 2 be a jerk, i jus know fora FACT! iv run hi 9s in the 1/4 ona 01 Gsxr 1000, an hav NEVA come close 2 9s ona late 90s R1, an neither has the motorcycle magazines, low 10s @ best, U must know of a special batch of 98-99 R1s, i agree, the Yamahas ar a beter riding bike, an feel smoother in the corners, but for the straightline, everyone i hav eva talked to says the suzi is faster, congrats on the GREAT FIND, a rare batch of super R1s from 99! any forsale?

I got mine R1 5 months ago after ninja zx6r and I still cant believe what kind of bike it is...You can handle it like 250cc bike and be fast as rocket! .... it looks futuristic for '98 and even now it looks great! Put led blinkers and you're ready to break hearts

i had a 98 blade it was awesome.....1 of my mates had a 98 r1........we swapped bikes for a ride and he got off and said the blade was a far better bike,i got off the r1 and the engine overwhelms everything to the point where you can`t enjoy it

From time to time i think more and more and again more that the old time cars bikes and more(everything with engines) are SOMETIMES 10 times better in reliability and theyre just mile eaters.Build for driving and they have nearly never died till today :) Ilove old bikes&cars :D (especially i start to like bikes more than cars =O)

let me tell you the bike that started it all out was the kz z1 9 then the gpz series from the early 80's and then it was the 86 1000r that i own...... i will say this my 1985 zx9 or whatever gpz has 135hp due to stage 3 jet kit so why do i need a new bike and if you look back kawasaki always led the way and set the bar so everyone was always copying the orinal zl9 and gpz SPANK U VERY MUCH

@extreeeeeemist yeh i know its an old post but the gpz and kz were before real sport bikes where around they handled like a 81 gl1000l lol and the cbr 900 wich is 100cc;s smaller made that power stock lol. the gpz and kz were definately tourer bikes they had a sit up stance not a lay on the tank stance. like sport bikes. i do like the gpz though but it was in a class by itself.

I'm a fireblade rider and fan, but the R1 was in a class by itself. The looks of that bike still can hang with the new bikes and exceeds the looks of some of the 09s.
