Our government was designed with disenfranchisement in mind. Think of how many people were ineligible for voting rights when this country was founded.
Some decent points. The only retort I could give is what could be better? What made us the biggest and baddest mo fo nation on the planet (up to now). Our founding fathers did SOMETHING right...
Well done and I know you did not touch on it because your point was to articulate how government actually is being run, but there is one thing that needs to be pointed out. If our representatives do not follow the guidelines that the Constitution lays out for them they can be impeached. The problem is there are never enough whistle blowers elected to office. If men and women of courage and honor were to be elected, our government would be a lot different.
@RjWeapon I said I agree with you! (about rep gov. being a fallacy). I never said that our representatives necessarily do read the appropriations bills or anything, I said I don't know for sure, I only have a quantitative guess of the extent of corruption in the absence of any evidence, for any conclusion. This makes my guess is meaningless. I don't make decisions or vote based off of it. (3 more years, though) It would be naive to think rep gov. >self-gov, but so would taking your word on it.
@RjWeapon First off, I a teenager who has no way of knowing any of this for sure, but I believe it's like this: I think our representatives can and do review laws more than the video implies, I think that our representatives can and do stick to their platform more than this video implies, and that our representatives talk out more fair budget resolutions than this video implies. But the point is still correct: the video only implies practically random government activity and no progress.
While this may be a bit of an exaggeration, This definitely does happen in our government and probably all other representative democracies in the history of the world. Al the more reason to reduce the scope and power of the government. Not to abolish our public services, but to privatize them.
@Skyler827 i basically agree though while we have a immoral monopoly on the use of force, we will retain the problem... other than self defense or remedy against violence, no man should be able to use force to bend another to his will ie: taxation (at least without 100% free choice)
The speech is called The President and The Press its a 19 minute speech doctored and molested by Youtubers. Read the full transcript, he talks about the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion, 10 days earlier on April 17th when the U.S. press reported on the pre-invasion preparations being made in Miami (Castro read about it in the newspaper)
The speech was actually given to the American Newspaper Publishers Association, addressing their responsibility to consider national security when publishing articles about government activity during the cold war
I don't really understand what you were saying with "representatives" voting on government budgets. Are you saying that they being asked to vote on these budgets is akin to asking some to answer "yes" or "no" to a loaded question?
The way in which people use the word rep when they say "representative democracy" and "political representatives" is downright meaningless, its doublespeak.
Fantastic video. Very clear and deliberate with the points you make. I do have a question though:
In the early years of this country many prominent men, most notably Ben Franklin, were very afraid that as government expanded, congress wouldn't be part-time local leaders, but professional politicians, whose main interests would be continuing a career rather than helping their community. At what point, do you think, did representative government fail? Did it ever work at all?
One could argue that Congress HAS 'worked' in concert to rectify particular damages... for example, the congressional success of burying the first few central banking institutions in America.
Although I disagree, I would argue that Congress was responsible for chartering these institutions in the first place.
So your saying that Andrew Jackson did good while trying to abolish the national bank, that did not work like the british central banking system. Alexander Hamilton's national banking system (credit system) needed a national bank and it wasn't a monetarist. The true flaw in representative governments, is the democratic principle itself, the dictatorship of the majority. That's why the income tax is optional (for those who wanted to pay it), that what the constitution says.
