Such a sad day for Hastings, it breaks my heart to see the pier in this state, we can just hope the council will rebuild the old lady back to her former glory
Andy, how sad it is to see Hastings Pier in such a sorry state. Sussex has now lost two Eugenius Birch piers (the other is Brighton's West Pier), only Eastbourne remains.
@GrahamLondonUK It does seem a little ironic that both Hastings & the West Pier were lost in the same way. Eastbourne is still a fully working pier, which will hopefully save it.
What a sad day for Hastings and surrounding area...Our pier is no more...just an eyesore of twisted metal...Arson is a very serious offence..I hope they throw the book at the two young men who did this...they deserve the full six years each for arson...they have caused a great deal of sadness for many local residents who were looking forward to the eventual reopening of the pier.
@Adibarum Very sad. I think everyone in the town is very upset about this. We all have our own memories of the pier. It will be interesting to see what happens if those two kids are found guilty.
its very ironic to look at the skeleton of what once was a lovley pier because the sign can you save me still lingers next to the pier i think the fucking assholes who did it should of died in the fire !
thank you for posting this .....now that the two disgusting low-lifers have taken it away from us through their despicable arson attack - this is a truely historic film footage for future generations to see that lots of us did genuinely care about the lovely old pier ... it is a very very sad day for Hastings, and the towns nearby. Also a hearfelt thank you to all the fire fighters for putting their own lives at risk trying to save what they could of the lovely pier throughout last night
@1961aseret I felt i had to record this little bit of history. Which i did in video, audio & photos. I'm very pleased that i did so too.
I've never understood the attraction of arson & often wonder if the people involved really consider the possible consequences of their actions. Probably not. I would have thought that they were pretty lucky to escpae themselves.
Didnt really lose much... It was falling into disrepair, hasn't been open in 5 years... I wouldnt blame the council if they payed those two to burn it down, Its sapping money from what little budget they had left. Would've been a stupid thing for someone to risk their life for. Authough, sure it IS a relic of victorian architecture, but there are much better examples all across the british coastline.
I used to spend my summer holidays in Hastings in the 1950's. I used to go fishing on the lower deck of the pier but it's dropped off now. I hope something can be done to save it. Good luck.
I am glad you got a good turn out, it was sad to see the pier in that state. When I was there a couple of years ago you could walk on it, I take it they don't allow that now.
Not as violent as the last demo in 1066 but if the "offshore owners" (are they French?) got a poke in the eye rather than an arrow then it was worth it!
Beautiful, Andy. You captured the feeling. I love the lonely pier shots at the end. Check out Tony's vids too; he has one that's just the speeches I couldn't hear yesterday. (C'est Pierre?) Um, does this t-shirt make me look fat? :)
Great to see such a turnout such as this Andy. What was also so good about this protest was that people, no matter their age or political viewpoints were so angry about this issue that they joined together.
I do hope the pier can be saved as it's part of the historical glue that holds the town together.
To many great things get took down these days that could and should be saved even when they have no history most places could be reperposed and used for something else.
WHAT? they want to tear Hastings Pier down! Why? What for? I have wonderful childhood memories there!!! I do hope the march had an impact and it's stopped.
Well, that's one option. But, hopefully not the one thats taken.
The purpose of this march was to try & get the Local Council to get a Compulsory Purchase Order for the pier & then pass the structure over to a trust that would then look after it. They could then get some money from grants etc.
You can't help but tap your feet to those Latin rhythmns can you?

@vtec295 I think it's all going to depend on the result of the structural survey being done next week.
andymooseman 1 year ago
Time to rebuild the old lady, hopefully they will - and use elements of the original design.
LeSaMilano 1 year ago
@LeSaMilano That is a possibilty, depending on the outcome of the structural survey which needs to be done. We'll see.

@1961aseret just saw the burnt down pier on tv...
criminal act?
dumbness is international...
we have our own, that get a hard on randomly burning cars, or war cemeteries....
these kids (never above 22 years of age) should just be made to rebuild what they have destroyed.
for free of course, and since that would only be repairing the damage, and that i'm a firm believer of the fine as a punishment; i would add one too.

No one has been allowed onto the pier since the council closed off access, for safety reasons, 3 years ago.
I agree, it is a real pity to see it in that state. Let's hope it won't be that way for too much longer :)

why are they wanting o get rid of it? I think it is marvelous
amiddleagedlady 2 years ago
Basically, it's a very bad state of repair. Which is why it's closed to the public at the moment.
The idea is to have the pier taken over by a trust, so that they can look after it :)

Impressive turnout. And catchy beat.
:-)
Hopefully the efforts will pay off.
Over here it takes a LOT of effort to get rid of something that's been declared a landmark. Usually, the obvious answer is "restore it."
Seems kinda strange that an historic landmark would even be in danger.
