  • Great game by Karpov. It was the first time I saw a "fianchettoed" rook.

  • Killer fork.

  • disregard that, it would mate at queen f6, the square you drew threw me off

  • at 12:58 you said mate on g7, but im fairly sure bishop could just capture

  • nice game...

  • Am I the only one who finds strong vs. weak player games more interesting than purely Grandmaster chess? Is this why Morphy's games are so interesting? Thanks for an interesting video.

  • Hey Jerry I must say that this is another superb video! So keep it up :)

  • @snuskefar1 Thanks snuskefar :)

  • ahh karpov...

the slightest positional mistake and he will slaughter you.

    great commentary as always!

  • this is such an interesting game to me, because as black I use a very similar defense, only I get the same pawn structure out of a caro kann, with the white bishop on the outside, looking for exchanges or adding pressure.

  • Knight is such an interesting piece

  • At first, I thought Stojanovic was a basketball palyer. :)

  • great #chess video, with cool ending. more Fort Knox French videos would be great, esp. ones where Black wins.

  • Assuming from 11:58 knight takes rook at e8, why can't queen take the knight after the bishop moves.

  • do you know who is trolling kingscrusher? just curious

  • @jjphysstud no

  • I never did like this line with the black pieces. I would from time to time play the Rubenstein old style with an early c5 break against the Tarrasch.

This line seems passive where the my best hope was to wait for white to make a mistake but white had no pressure on him to encourage any mistakes on his part. Too easy for white just to have a total clamp on the center.

  • Why can't the queen just move to f4 to get out of the trap in the opening?

  • @MoPar7055 nevermind, overlooked

  • Look at that clown on b7!

  • I really learn a lot from your commentaries. I've been playing only 2 years, and one of the most challenging things is to try and deduce how chess players *think* while playing...what they see, how they focus, what their eyes are attuned to. I get this from your videos, and I find it incredibly valuable--and something unique I don't see in every annotated game. The pacing is right as well--I find I can follow right along. Thank you.

  • @JamieMyxter Thanks Jamie.

  • i think they should make it a rule to play through the game even if the losing person sees the mate ahead...make the opponent earn the victory.. make them march that one pawn all the way down the board.. you never know they might actually miss the mate..or slip up...or something..

  • Thanks for the video. Loved that it went all the way to checkmate. But I was wondering does black not see the checkmate and that's why he didn't resign or was it something else.

  • @dumpnchase Likely just a matter of taste. I'm pretty sure he knew it'd be mate.

  • @dumpnchase he definently , 100% saw it i mean this is high level chess but he most certainly let karpov play the mate simply beacuse it was beautifull

  • @tuoljg Thanks for the reply. So letting him get to the checkmate was a sign of respect. Thanks

  • look at this clown on b7 :D

  • karpov would've beaten fisher.

  • Tremendous commentary. I'm playing a team vote game as Black in this line and this helps very much. Thanks!

  • Well played by Karpov but I don't think the defense was very strong. Not playing Nxe5 seems crazy. I guess black was just nervous to be playing one of the world's greatest ever players and forgot how to move the pieces properly...

  • Great Video, Thanks alot. Maybe Next time you could try to find a game, where a chess player comes back, from a large disadvantage against an opponent's team. haha well thanks again Jerry.

  • Wow Jerry I was just thinking too at 6:50 'I wonder what would result if he would play the bishop in the corner instead' and a few seconds later you covered that too. Great analysis.

  • Very accurate observations! Masterful!

  • Way for Karpov to punish poor development. :-)

  • You're so mean to missplaced pieces!

"Look at that knight on the rim, yo what' up there fattie?".

  • Look at that clown on b7!

  • @Lhurgolf lol

  • I feel guilty , every time i watch one of jerry's video at night i fall sleep ,

  • 8:01 "and again, look at this clown on uh B7 I mean what is it really doing over here?"

    CLASSIC

  • lol fianchetto'ed rook

  • I realize the interest in trying something new, especially against a world champion, trying to maybe throw them off a book line or something, but it's almost like he came up with that b6 move right on the spot. I can't imagine he thought it through beforehand or he'd realize how silly it seems to take a total of 4 moves to fianchetto a bishop. Between that and the immediate weaknesses it caused, it's almost as if white gained about 4 or 5 moves on black just on that one mistake.

  • What a beautiful game! !

As always, Your analysis & commentaries are A++

    12:31 Qh4 ..

    E P I C KA R P O V Trap !

    Thanks again!

  • Love it

  • Loved the video, I agree with a number of the other responses, this was a great explanation for chess beginners, which I am, can't comment on how helpful it is for the chess experts ;-)

    Thanks again

  • Wow...how much prep do you suppose went into the b6 move before the game. Really shows the peril in weakening squares, even ones far from your king. Nice job on this video.

  • Another Nice vid, cheers.

  • I am a rank beginner and these videos an indispensable tool in helping to develop my skills. Clear explanations, thoughtful analysis, and done so in terms that make sense to a beginner yet don't insult the intelligence of a more seasoned player. Well done!

  • Great video. For a chess novice like me, your "What if" scenarios are COMPLETELY necessary because I don't tend to see those combinations several moves down. This is really accessible and interesting, even for someone who is not very knowledgable about chess. Thanks

  • Awesome video

  • another great video! thanks for your informative commentary

  • nice video & nice puzzle at the end! Also so funny spelling of "Mihajlo Stojanović" :D i laughed 5 min. Try switching "j" to "y' when you spell... Or don't w/e :). Nice comments.

  • Great video and commentary. I recently started playing the french defense and use the fort knox, so this was very interesting and informative. Thank you VERY much! I had no idea about that queen trap. I think I must have put myself in that bad position many times but luckily never had an oponent who yet took advantage of it.

  • been awhile since ive seen an Arabian mate

  • Nice combination of both positional and tactical play by karpov.

  • I found the knock-out blow. Hehe. :)))

  • muy gooood

  • very nice

  • Would rook to G6 work for the knockout blow? If pawn takes then wouldnt knight to F6 be mate?

  • @craigybaby10101 no, because the pawn doesn't have to take. And black has time to defend with Q to d8 perhaps? forcing exchange of queens? remember, black is a piece up

  • jerry for president

  • thanks for this Jerry.

  • I think someone like you could make a show about chess on regular tv and it would actually be a popular show. You show chess the way it is and make every thing crystal clear. You are not one of those commentators who "try" to make chess exciting - you just let the natural excitement of chess be readily visible. If there were more chess comemtators like you, I think chess would have television popularity approaching that of baseball. Keep up the great work!

  • @boletusedilus in theory yes, but in reality chess is much to complicated for the majority of the public to understand or get into, its unfortunate, but true.

  • @irishmonkey640 There are more chess-clubs in the world that of any other sport, if you promote it enough people would get into it.

The problem is mainly that chess games are visually too static. That means that there isn't much advertising space compared to other sports. In snooker players are walking around, so they can put adds on all the sides of the room. Top level snooker is also quite complicated and most people don't understand it either.

  • @boletusedilus Nah Television is a contadiction to chess. With commercials and crap. The internet is a great place for the chess fanatic and the perfect medium.

  • @boletusedilus Thank you for the kind words.

  • Good stuff, As per usual.... & thanks for including the chess code.

  • @TheEnglishEducator Thanks and you're welcome. :)
