@Dingotech2000 It started when he was a guest host on a video and it got so many views. That's when we invented the "find Alex" game. I wouldn't have done it without his expressed permission.
@billtvmacon Just joking about Alex. I didn't know about the "game", which is awesome btw. So I guess I should start looking more closely at your vids now huh? Just one more reason you make some of the best vids on YT. :-)
I love your videos.....so much....you put SOO much effort into them it makes them THE BEST ONES EVER !!!! probably you're one of my top 5 youtubers and i am subscribed to 200 so people..so PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE KEEP IT UP!!! :D :D :D
@skintc Well, it seems that people enjoy finding Alex and my view numbers are higher than when he's not in them. I have to admit that I may start running out of places to hide him. All in fun.
Where I live, you cannot cancel anything by phone. It's either a FAX or a letter that you have to send, which is a bit slow but at least you don't have to listen to them trying to win you over. As for e-mail: I lost two addresses, one 5 year old and one 10 year old, because they significantly raised the price. After that experience and changing addresses everywhere, I have decided to buy my own domain and host my own mail server and have been using that ever since.
Damn it Bill! When indigo went off I thought it was my phone instead :P This is the SECOND time I have thought this xD Another excellent video my friend :)
@RJmakesvids I'm not planning on NoCon this year. There's still come great information there. Love the Vlogbrothers but I kinda lost interest in VidCon. Too far away, to many people, too expensive.
Good Dial Up impression! Luckily, I never had to go through Dial Up because we got a computer when broadband was introduced. I'm glad, because that noise hurts.
Great video Bill, especially the Tom Milsom music. Gotta love Milsom.
I once canceled an aol account (/ducks head in shame for having an aol account in the first place) by canceling the credit card. It just seemed easier after trying to call aol about it. Then I found that Dilbert did the same thing in a cartoon. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
So I'm watching your video, and my cat is sleeping on the desktop next the computer. You started making the dial-up connect sound and IT WOKE HIM UP! That's how annoying that dial-up sound was (is). It wakes up cats!
I cancelled my CompuServe account around 2004. I hadn't used the email or logged into the service for a long time. They guy on the line said "You've been a customer for SEVENTEEN years. I had paid them over $4,000 for a service I didn't use. D'oh!
@BuggeritHandnShrimp I'm trying to remember when I had Compuserve. It was somewhere around 2400 baud. Do you remember when they let us have real names instead of numbers?
I like hearing you talk about the internet. You bring an interesting, different perspective because of your..... greater life experience ;)
That said, I totally remember dial-up. It, coupled with a Windows 95 PC that we had until 2004, made me regularly afraid that our computer would explode from working too hard.
@KatieAtLarge I'm old as dirt. I was the last of my friends to move to Windows. They even called me DOS man. lol But, when their computers had problems I could go into DOS and check things out.
My only saving grace i sthat Paris Hilton's grandfather gave like 97% of his money to charity and Paris will only get barely $5 million . Geez! That girl goes through $5 million in one year! Poor Paris. :p
Wjen I was a kid, 300 baud was the fastest (even 1200 baud gave me 75% garbage) when i'd hook up to a B.B.S. And my family would ALWAYZ hear that annpoying on-line noise when they'd pick up the phone. Ahhh, the NOT-So-Good-Ole-Dayz. Good riddance
Back in the 90s Bell Canada decided to offer free call waiting as a promo. whenever anyone called me my internet was cut off. When I called to cancel the thing I had to argue about it, they were baffled why I would want to cancel a free service. Since then I've cancelled Bell altogether.
@Ape65 I remember that! There was a phone code that was "star" and then some number that would stop call waiting from knocking me offline. That seems like a lifetime ago.
I'd finally forgotten about the atrocity that was dial-up internet, and you had to bring it up again. I'm dedicating all the nightmares I have tonight of busy dial tones and slowly-loading webpages to you, Bill.
@33Chimel33 LOL! Yes! Congratulations, you found Alex in the video. The last three have had his picture somewhere. When I do this I seem to get more views than usual.
Also, I think I have a couple of internal modems here you can have.
No thanks, internal or external modems won't fit modern computers anymore, no ISA bus or serial port.
I still remember entering some AT commands to make my US Robotics (like in Asimov stories) modem mute instead of waking up the parents when watching ... you know ... porn animated gifs, porn ascii art, or reading nifty stories.
I see you were on Compuserve too. I had a 5-digit ID, before they allowed names as email aliases, not just numbers. ^-^
I first heard of the Japan earthquake through the internet. I logged on the morning after (it happened night-time in my timezone) and saw lots of Facebook-posts with "My thoughts are with Japan" and my first thought was "Oh, no. That can't be good." Which it wasn't. :(
