  • My best guy friend Harold and I are in band and we play trombone. We used to play this song called Songs of Sailor and Sea and everytime we'd hear it we'd say we thought of a flying pirate ship. Today we played this song and I said "Harold look! There goes our flying pirate ship!" :) <3 Band. This song sounds better with instruments than with a choir.

  • 2:35

    I just

    I can't

  • our honor band is playing this for UIL its such a beautiful song

  • for some reason , at the end of the song it sounds very similar to the movie "Finding Nemo".

  • very beautiful !

  • i love gary green he is one of the most amazing conductors i have gotten a chance to work with

  • wow O.O you guys are good I get goosebumps everytime i hear/play this song its just so amazing

  • we're playing this in our hs wind symphony. and we listened to the choral version with the lights off and eyes closed, and afterwards we talked about what images we saw. most ppl said a battle scene in slowmo when an important person is dying and everything is focussed on him. mine was, a few singers in a pitch black church then as it goes on, the sun starts to seep through the stain glass windows and at the end, it's like jack in titanic..slowly drifting off into the depths of the ocean.

  • @400adub That's deep man. Or girl. I'ma call you dude ;)

  • Brass entrances are the hardest :(

  • @calvinlovesgreen agreed!! an analogy i use is, think of holding a bird in your hand, then at your entrance you open your hand and the bird slowly flies away..

  • @400adub Haha nice! :) That's a beautiful image my friend.

  • @calvinlovesgreen Yes! Our band teacher was just talking about that.. telling us that when we enter we shouldn't sound like we're trying to start a lawn mower or something ;)

  • I'm playing this with the wind ensemble at my school and it sounds wonderful to play it live.

  • Thank you for this! 2:34-4:00 is the reason why this version is better than the choral version, and this recording proves my point! In other recordings, 2:34 is too fast, too quiet, and emotionless. The band in this recording got it right. Thank you!!!

  • Instant chills at 2:34...I love the choral version, but I'm beginning to love this a lot more...it just sounds more well-suited for band with this version...

  • I'm gona be band geek and say this was in academy drum and bugle corps 2011 show XD

  • my marching band incorporated this song into the show last year and we made it to semi-finals in grand nationals for the first time! :D

we played this as a preshow while the guard and pit were setting up and then the pit played the choral version as we were coming on and off the field :D

  • I played this in NM all-state and I remember the first time we got a real feel for the song, the room was so still and people had tears in their eyes. One of the most emotional pieces I've ever had the privilege of playing. Btw, the 3rd french horn part a the climax is BOMB!

  • Comment removed

  • i don't remember hearing all this color when i played it in high school. wow, amazing job.

  • <3 I love being a French Horn player.

  • Just had the privilege to perform this composition tonight at my college. We didn't quite execute the piece as well as this recording but it still was quite beautiful and powerful. And I enjoyed covering flute parts 2, 3, and 4 XD

  • @UsagitheBassoonist Omg, are you kidding? I played this monday night at my college too........ lol .... if you go to PBSC this is really funny, and there's only one bassoon player there soo... ummm... I might know you..

  • I feel so grateful to have played this piece of music in my high school concert band. Absolutely beautiful!!!

  • I have no idea how many times I have pressed replay! I love this piece!

  • At 2:34 ..it's like a giant drop of beautifulness .

  • @TeamBreezy2 That is what light sounds like

  • This song makes me realize how little all my problems are... and how awesome and badass life can be <3

  • I absolutely love this song! I'm playing baritone horn and we don't play much...but when the big part comes around its amazing

  • Probably the most beautiful sounding piece of music I've ever heard. At 2:30 My brain explodes

  • The 7 people that disliked this... there are so many things wrong with you... how could you not love an amazing piece of music like this...

  • @epicyouman I'm not one of the 7, but there have been better renditions of the song, I suppose? A couple weak entrances especially in the higher brass. But overall quite wonderfully done.

  • I remember playing this in my band in college. I played Second Trumpet so I had the cool part that moves during the climax...I cried every time we played it...

  • sooo great

  • Wow 2:30. Just Wow. Jesus. This translates to band very well in my opinion.

  • @JustSamantha15. me too:) im a freshman, in advanced band, named samantha, but i play flute haha. i though i had commented on this in my sleep or something haha

  • I cried.

  • Who doesn't get goosebumps at Figure C...Love the tubas!!!

  • now this, this is what you call music...

  • just started learning this song in Honors Wind Ensemble today.....amazing what this song does to your soul...deep

  • Just played this for the first time in my band and it moved me :')

  • @TheMasterSplooge I know, I had goosebumps. <3

  • This isn't "hard" to play, but it takes a true musician to make it musical, and deep with emotion. I loved this piece. I still play the horn part at 2:34, and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. <3

  • @5:47 a french horn messes up, but it takes a good musician to play through and correct it to where it is non noticeable. Good job to that player, he/she is skilled at blending in.

  • Playing this right now in the advanced wind ensemble. Freshman clarinet player. It's so hard to tune and not rush. Such an emotional piece. Every time we play this, I'm moved. So beautiful.

  • I remember back when I was a little seventh grader we went up to the high school to play this song. Of course, we blew at it so no one really recognized its greatness until the first time we played it with the high school band and it was the single most passionate, emotion-capturing song i had ever heard. And this is coming from a varsity o-lineman so im not some pussy

  • @Funkmaster2014 To be in band and to play something so emotional does not mean you are a pussy, my friend.

  • @Funkmaster2014 I was touched by your comment until the last sentence. -10 respect points.

  • @Funkmaster2014 I too am a varsity o lineman (center) and linebacker, I've played this and cried at part C.

  • @Funkmaster2014 pussy

  • @Funkmaster2014 I played the trombone part to this song. We had a concert for this piece, and everyone was putting so much emotion in this piece. I ended up crying just playing the third part. Its a rollercoaster of intense feelings.

  • @Funkmaster2014 awh you're a little itty bitty sophomore, aren't you? :))

  • Played this in the 2011 BOA Summer Symposium Oklahoma band; first Euphonium. I loved this piece, it's gorgeous :)

  • 2:35-3:25 All the metal objects around my speakers randomly start to vibrate! YESSSS!!!!!

  • 1:49 o.0 WOW

  • 2:34 that part always gets me. It makes me think about stuff. Stuff that hurts, yet this music seems to temporarily numb it.

  • Doesn't need to have crazy runs to be beautiful, does it? (This song is made up of quater notes and half notes)

  • hey, i was in this group! didn't realize it had so many views...great! Wonderful clinic. Glad so many have enjoyed this!

  • i am playing this in miller city's high school band on french horn!!!! OMG I LOVE THIS SONG AND I LOVE PLAYING IT TOO!!!

  • @CANCAN10000 Guess What!!! I am playing the Tuba part for it too cause I go to the same school as you!!!

  • lol someone coughs @3:57

  • We played this my Freshman year (Last Year) and made straight ones at contest, it was awesome...Wooo go RFHS!!!! (Rockport TX)

  • This piece is so beautiful. I played this in symphonic band my freshman year in high school. I love the choir part to it too. It's always kinda been a dream to sing this with a choir, but I haven't been lucky yet....

  • This song has everything. Triumph and power, stillness, conflict, movement. It's one of those pieces that is a true work of art.

  • I am in marching band and we get to play this as part of our show. It is a helluva more simplified arrangement of Lux Aurumque, but this is still a very beautiful piece.

  • @AltosaxJazzman97 No way! My marching band also incorporated part of this into our show.

  • @Phylarian Like 3 bands at our first competition (Lake Park) played this or something from Eric Whitacre.

  • @AltosaxJazzman97 So did mine, lol.

  • uga wind ensemble played this it has since become one of my favs along with david maslankas give us this day and o magnum mysterium

  • For all those who can't find spots to breathe, learn to circular breathe! It's tough, but it helps quite a bit.

  • @Phylarian Also, stagger breathe. You don't need to play every note in the entire piece, especially if there are more than one players on a part.

  • This gave me goosebumps...

  • This is probably one of the most beautiful chart I have ever performed. I remember playing this song for a competition once and started crying so hard that I couldn't keep playing. This song has left a mark on my heart. :)

  • I absolutely LOVE this piece. Can I get this to be played at my funeral? For people to remember me as a good person. I want people to be happy that I still live through music. :)

  • I think this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard.

  • high G's in the horn. Not hard but not many good breathing areas.

  • talk about no place to breathe haha! I sang this piece in a choir... wow

  • Simply amazing!!! i love it!

  • If your lungs explode....try a 100% string rendition for those of us with Asthma! I know...long broken arms pulling on the strings, and a Piano world ruin it all! Eric's choir (s) doing this piece is rather nice. I'll keep searching for a "string" version, but if found, I'll probably be disappointed. Then again.... ??

  • I played this song in my high school band last year. Our director was crying while he conducted it, and I was on the verge of tears myself. Being a french horn player with this part.. its just godly to listen to. thank you Mr. Whitacre

  • This song gives me chicken skin everytime I listen to it. God I love Eric Whitacre.

  • The trombone parts in this song are freaking sweet.

  • @WHOOITSDAVE Really? I think i remember holding A for a very long time...

  • 1:46 when the French-Horns and Clarinets play just sounds amazing, and the Horn solo after <3

  • 2:30 is the best part. best song ever

  • @Prankster5000 Really? My favorite part was from 0:06 to 6:21 :D

  • Top comment, and I didn't even say anything sarcastic. Hell yeah.

  • I LOVE YOU THISS! i think 80000 of theses views are from me alone! :D

  • I just about died a 2:30

  • This was a fun piece to play. It gave me chills everytime we played it

  • I listen to this all the time, its my therapy

  • great... I cant say nothing more to this. . . Infinity.....

  • It sounds like theres is an extra bit added in the band version. (2:30-3:20) I didn't hear that bit in the original vocal version.

  • @trash266001 i think it is..

  • @trash266001 correct, that portion is from another work of his called "Paradise Lost"

  • Most beautiful piece I've ever played.

  • One of the most moving pieces I've ever played. Everything from the construction of the piece to the dynamic changes was unlike anything I've ever played or heard. ERic Whitacre is my new Jesus.

  • The build @ 2:30 [wasn't following bars] was absolutely beautiful, and it just continued to grow. Amazing. I'm a vocalist, so hearing this instrumentally is new to me, but it's so well done and just as moving.

    Amazing.

  • We played this at NE Senior districts in MA this year...it's probably now my favorite piece for wind ensemble. So beautiful.

  • i played the tuba on this recording and i absolutly loved playing this peice. Gary green is posibly the best conductor ive ever played for he showed so much emotion while conducting this peice and it transfered to the whole band. Such a great song. Well done eric

  • Barren County High School played this aat one of are spring conserts. Its was very pretty. <3 love this peice of music <3

  • i did this piece 3 years ago and was a 1st clarinet... my lungs were fucking dead after :P

  • Anthony Wayne High School Symphonic band percussionist here and we warm up every practice with this and everyday a part of my dies and is reborn with the light of the music Gods.

  • Timberline High School from Lacey Washington is currently rehearsing this and is playing it at the heritage festival in Vancouver!!! (What What!!!?) [[Btw im first clarinet in this song!!! :D]]

  • Played this in Blue devils b 2010 show. Best ballad ever.

  • Played this on French Horn in high school. One piece I will NEVER forget.

  • gosh 7 people got so moved by this song that they missed the like button.

  • Wondrous

  • I love this piece so much. It's gorgeous and simple, all in all very moving. Makes my heart flutter. =)

Three Rivers High School Symphony Band is playing this at their Spring Concert this year. (I play Sax in this band).

  • 7 people don't know what beautiful music is.

  • the french horn makes up this peice

  • I thinking about choir,band team up

  • My drum corps played this as our ballad last year :)

  • I'm a french horn player. & This...peice was VERY hard. NO ONE can say this was easy...

  • @TeamBreezy2 I played this piece as a horn as well, i was first horn and played the high G, very challenging but it sounded amazing

  • I have seen the comments in other video's stating that they were moved to tears and awe struck.

Not once before has this happened to me. I was amazingly impressed when I listened to a professional recording of the choral piece. However, this forced me to sit still, feel the shivers and chills race along my spine. This was music in the fullest form.

I am in awe of how amazing this piece is. Eric Whitacre has just passed Samuel Hazo as my favorite band Composer.

  • one of my bandmates doesn't understand the meaning of Soft hes a Trumpet and I sit right in front of him

I love being a 2nd Clarinet though not too high not too low. :3 But especially now, because we only have 2 firsts in our band... and 13.5 measures and about 60 bpm sounds painful

  • OH NO!!!! 7 people were crying so hard that they couldn't see, and hit the dislike button by accident!!!

  • played this with the Manitoba Senior Honour band a couple years ago and we didnt play it this well but just listening to this song reminds me of playing it at the concert and how amazing it felt to be part of an ensemble playing this. Absolutely incredible

  • This is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever had the pleasure to perform. Really.

  • I kind of like this version better than the choir one.... probably just cus its extended :P

  • I hope that that wasn't just one clarinet play that hella long G. That's like...no. How is that possible?

  • @TheBandicoot16 I had to play it by myself for a performance because the other 1st clarinet player wasn't there. It was awful.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Dang, I bet it was. I didn't know if that could even be humanly possible. lol

  • @TheBandicoot16 i know someone who has done it we played this for festival this year and she rocked that G

  • @Halo3rockss that's freaking nuts. i'd die

  • Wow breathtaking. I really love this piece and you guys did a superb job. A couple of late entrances, but your blend is awesome.

  • eeaouch! The first note is out of tune, euphoniums!!! Oh well, Whitacare hard to tune to

  • Absolutely fantastic piece.

  • Dude I'm sorry,

But I think I'm the only one who will say it.

This is the absolute worst performance of Lux Aurumque I have ever heard.

Entrances were terrible, releases were off, phrasing was terrible.

  • @skateit812 agreed

  • @skateit812 granted, but the balance of the ensemble was fantastic

  • im apart of stephenson high schools wind ensemble and we will be performing this song at kinnesaw state. i love this song

  • my band almost played this... and i wish we did. but tuning is very hard to do especially in this piece and when not everyone in the band is the same skill level....

  • The climax of this piece would be incredible if it was switched to choir:)

the choir version is just Ve-Lut Au-Rum... quarter notes... and its a shame to not continue perfection:(

  • We had the great honor of playing this at our Honor Region Band festival, and a girl actually came up to us after the concert and told us listening to it made her cry, because it was so beautiful. I wasn't so sure about this piece before, but goodness, do I LOVE it now!!

  • 5 people are deaf. . .

  • Any 1st clarinet players in the house?

That concert G for 13 and a half measures killed this piece for me. I love it to death, but I couldn't properly enjoy it when my lungs were on the verge of exploding. Can you say "nowhere to breathe"??? >.<

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Not to mention it's incredibly hard to stay in tune...

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy haha same here. and the sad thing is, im first chair and the girl next to me doesn't know how to tune!

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy you could learn to circular breath

  • @wilsonab899 Circular breathing??

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Just got this piece for the wind ensemble I play in. I can't say I agree with you more haha

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy I'm normally a first clarinet and I had the pleasure of playing second for this piece. I especially love the dissonance the seconds get to bring out during the big impact.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy i feel you!!! and there's only 3 of us 1sts in the band so its hard! lol but we try to make it sound full by staggering breathing at different points, cause it sounds empty if we did it at the same time lol

  • @mexicandowndastreet4 There were only 2 first clarinets in my band when we played this...and for one performance, the other first clarinet wasn't there.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy hmmm...not good lol even with one person playing, you can still make it seem like you're not breathing anywhere or am i wrong? (cause i don't really have the music with me anymore -_-)

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy

Many times when a part has a note that is held for an extended period of time, the different chairs will share it by staggering entrances before the pitch goes flat... Although if you were pro, you would go it alone.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy I just got this piece today! 1st clarinetist here!!!!!!!!!! FJKGHASERG THAT CONCERT G WILL BE SOO SJDGHAURAGY4U8

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy OMGAH I know right!

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy That's what circular breathing is for!

  • @MCgoogles1000 What is circular breathing exactly?....

    Maybe I'm stupid...but I've never heard of it :P

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Circular breathing is when you play and breathe AT THE SAME TIME 0.o. Its extreamly hard to do, because you have to make sure you can sustain the notes you are playing without giving them any extra air support while you are breathing. You fill your mouth with air, begin to play, then close off the back of your throat and breathe through your nose while giving continuing to play- giving off a steady pressure at the same time. Incredibly difficult.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Haha, My friend and I are both playing the A together and still run out of breath!

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy

I've played this song for two years now (last year for SCBDA concert festival, this year at SC Region I band, and for our senior's graduation this year) and the two clarinets (me and my friend) always run out of breath, so you're not alone! A substitute who was teaching one day told us to be perfectly in tune and sound like the Dr. Beat tuner. It didn't work so well.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy 1st trumpet, its hard but its my favorite piece.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy 1st trumpet, its hard but its my favorite piece. Also it helps to circular breath and that is a major pain.

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy - Two words: circular breathe! :D

  • @mellz0rthekilljoy Staggerbreath maybe? Or were you the only one?

  • I'm playing this song in my band now. Our concert is on this upcoming monday, and i hope we can play half as good as these people! this doesnt sound like highschool at all!

  • This song is so beautuful. Our band is playing this for Concert Festival and I am so excited!!:)

  • The Rockport-Fulton High School band which I'm in, is going to play this for UIL this year and I love this song, it's extremely beautiful.

  • This is beautiful. True sheer beauty. But I prefer it in it's original form. Chorus for the win. :)

  • @vinnykov18 i dunno... i've listened to choir versions and band versions and theres just this fuller sound you cant compare with that a band has. while singing is beautiful, i still love band better.

  • This song is amazing! i have never heard a song like this. you know what real music is when you listen to this. I felt honored to play this song!! But i really think the Texas all-state band plays it the best!!! :)

  • ill always remember the afternoon we played this... :') it was just amazing

  • the texas all-state 4a symphonic band played this!!!!(:
