  • i got a 48 D sittin in my yard, runs (barely) but shes a mean beast, loudest thing in my town, i got it all n**ger rigs to start with the battery by slammin the negative terminal on the battery and boom, fires on up, but damn is it slow haha

  • The first tractor I ever drove was my Grandfather's 1937 D, (He'd had an A before the D,) What a great machine that D was!!! I learned to plow & cultivate with it & I'd also use it to haul wagonloads of hay & corn, He kept the D 'til '49 when he traded it in on a brand new R diesel which I also learned to drive and which he also gave to me when he gave up farming in '92, I still have the R, It still runs like new!!!

  • Nice! I showed this video to my Mom, born 1929, and she said it's the exact tractor model she used to have to start and plow with when the men were all gone to war. She even told you: "now run around to the other side and close the the petcock"(compression release) when she watched it!

  • cool machine you have

  • Need a hot mag

  • cant beat the pop of an old john deere

  • very, very nice machine!!

  • If its cold enough that you need a sock hat...try increasing your fuel....as air gets colder the oxygen becomes denser thus you should enrich your fuel mixture. Thats why newer vehicles have an O2 sensor. God Bless

  • that a mule in the back ground?

  • why does everybody think that JD D'S are a diesel they certainly do not sound like one mine doesent.

  • well, that's technology!

the best technology is as simple

  • The new ULSD doesn't have the lubricity properties of good ol number 2 diesel, so I add some transmission fluid (not anything fancy) just before I refuel so it all mixes together. The tranny fluid provides lubrication for the pump and injectors.

  • I'm not sure what prompted your post, this tractor is not diesel. But while on topic, use two-stroke oil not tranny fluid. It is designed to be burned and does not have all the expensive additives required by an auto trans.

  • @carl4043

good point with the 2 cycle oil with diesel engines- MUCH cheaper to buy than transmission fluid! I thought it was diesel, and thought I'd pass the word around about the ULSD.

  • thats great

  • Nothing Runs Like a Deere!!!!

  • nice old jhon deere sounds quite nice

  • At first she hid my glasses

Because she knows that I can't see,

She said, "You ain't goin' nowhere Boy 'til you spend a little time with me!!"

Then the boys called from the honky tonk

Saying, "There's a party goin' on down here."

Well she might've took my car keys

But she forgot about my old John Deere!!!

  • Thats just beautyfull!!

  • My D starts like that unless it back fires but usually it will start.

  • There she goes... :)

  • spoke front wheels look sweet on this tractor.

  • Now... THAT is the way a tractor SHOULD sound upon start up!

  • Very nice Tractorsound!

Greats from West Germany & 5*

  • nice D I used to run one that was in full iorn

  • My mother started D's by flywheel back in the day she said she put her foot on the wheel for leverage. I remember my grandfather farming with old Deere tractors A's B's' D's then got his first diesel I think it was a 720 had small gas engine to start it . I miss those days. D's did have electric starters on them not sure what year.

  • Did the D ever have an electronic start?

  • the late styled D's offered an electric start

  • My 41 D has factory electric start. It was bought new by my Great-Great Grandfather. It still runs like a top!

  • we have a 1924 JD D and the hand crank doesnt work, we have to pull start it everytime. the last time we were pull starting it the pet cocks blew gas all over my uncle,

  • If you time the mag impulse to trip at TDC it will start really good by hand. Also install a new needle and seat in the carb. Might need a new float too.

  • My uncle has a 1947 G but it is electric start so you can leave the pet-cocks closed. But if the battery is dead you have to open them with that 400 plus cubic inch G engine. The steering weel comes off and you stick that into a slot in the center of the flywheel for hand cranking. The D is over 500, But somehow a G will out pull a D at the drawbar. But not on the belt. Must be the G has bigger wheels. Of course a guy we know has a nice 820 JD 2 cyl and it will outpull both drawbar or belt.

  • I am currently restoring a 1937 model D. All the literature I have found just shows HP, what is the torque output on a D?

  • Anyone get to a Tea Party the other day?

  • My dad has a 1936 unstyled A and ive started it up a couple times and im only 12 I will get a video of it soon.

  • What is the purpose of those pet-cocks?

  • they release compression out of the cylinders

  • my grandpa has a 1929 model D, those things are a bitch to start up cold

  • @masterjedi89 oh i know we used to own a 1939 D in the summer if it didnt start by the time you flipped the flywheel twice theres something wrong lol

  • very nice old tractor! that makes me REALLY appreciate the electric starter on my little JD

  • nice tractor! how many hp?

  • When new it was rated for about 29 drawbar HP, and 37 belt HP.

  • And like 500 lb ft?

  • nice video, I love the sound when you start up an old tractor!

  • Thank god for compression release... lol

  • They are called pedcocks.

  • very cool!!

  • I farmed with one just like that! My dad's all had starters on them. I love the sound of the old D! I spent many hours on them when I was a kid.

  • My dad's also had lights on it.

  • I like the D i own an Unstyled A though. I can start my A and im only 11

  • youre shittin me! i didnt think us kids had that potential in us or i wouldve done that a long time ago!

  • lol hope you got it in neutral. we just got a Ford 8n and you can start it in any gear!! dangerouse!!

  • most tractors you can.

  • The old ones.

  • Yeah

I know ours the thing will run you over in a heart beat.

  • Wow lol what tractor is it?

  • mccormick deering w6 super.

Its a asshole, Runs great for this fest we do.

    Then on somedays, Dosent work.

And last year it ran great all the time, Then i went to take it back to the shed and it was missing like hell.

gonna take a video of it running this year, I cant find any on youtube.

  • Cool, I don't know what tractor you are talkin bout, but can't wait to see that video!

  • Il send it to you when i take it.

Won't be until the festival which is labour day weekend, And im taking videos of what we do.

We do antique bailing and threshing.

Even have a steam engine in there.

  • Thats cool, Cool your 15?!

  • Yep

  • I'm 14!!

  • a w6 thats a fairly big tractor but i have seen a w9 (i think) at a show i go to were we drive our tractors in the mall.

but a w6 should be able to run a thresher.

    were is your show at?

  • Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada

We use it on a bailer, And run a thresher with a steam engine.

  • That's a real nice tractor, bro! We always had Farmalls but our neighbors were JD folks. I used to love to see their hired man crank their old JD. He'd always get up on the tractor and kick the flywheel to crank it, which was really cool!

  • Thats a big counter flywheel nice job

  • Reminds me of my childhood. I had to hold the petcock open once in awhile for my dad to get ours started. Thanks

  • i know what you mean about finding out what they like. i have a 41 B and i'm slowly finding out what she likes. very nice looking D!

  • i know what you mean about finding out what they like. i have a 41 B and i'm slowly finding out what she likes. very nice looking D!

  • thank you

  • Sorry, it is an hot head or diesel?

    a diesel true!!

  • It was designed to start on gasoline and run on tractor fuel, a form of kerosene, but I just run it with gasoline.

  • @carl4043

It's not a diesel, yet it's designed to use diesel fuel essentially (that's basically what kerosene is, after all)... I'm confused. Does it still use spark for that?

  • Power Kerosene, also called tractor fuel or TVO, is what it was designed to run on. It is not the same thing as modern kerosene or diesel. The engine is started on gasoline and warmed to operating temp, then switched over to TVO. The exhaust and intake manifolds are joined, so when the TVO reaches the very hot manifold it vaporizes into a gas that will ignite with the spark plug. Search Google for TVO FUEL

  • okay

  • cool deere

  • well i am 19 and own a 1941 b that set in the weeds 4 about 30 years it all in good working order but has a bad gas tank lol i cranked and cranked on that thing and said 4 get i pulled started it lol and 5 trun over it was runnin like a deeere should

  • i love cranking those things

  • It's no fun when they're being uncooperative! It took a lot of sore muscles to learn what it likes to start.

  • Im with ya there I love the hand start
