Within a year of the Shah's removal, the Iran-Iraq war started and the U.S. had to side with the secular Iraq and its military dictator Saddam Hussein. None of this would have every occurred if Carter had not weakened the Shah's regime.

This has since been mentioned on numerous occasions by both Robert Gates, the current Hegemonist in chief, and Zbignew Brezinski, the architect of the plan to provoke the Soviets into war. Because the Shah was accused of torturing over 3000 prisoners, Carter pressured the Shah to release "political prisoners", which included Islamic radicals, communists and terrorists.
