Schnittke's 'sinister' side is a bit cheesy, with an unfair use of dissonance, like he consciously wants to make dissonance too blatantly to enhance the effect some tonal simplicities. At times he doesnt use it in such way, and intends the madness to be central of his work. It is then when I believe him to be a master of expression, balancing phrases with finesse comparable to Mendelssohn's and Berlioz'.
Schnittke was a true revoutionary... incorporating so many different musical styles. Every piece of his you listen to will be full of surprises. I would like someone to upload his Symphony No. 0... a tonal masterpiece with four conventional movements, ending with a dissonant chord! ...a harbinger of things to come!
people that coughs at concerts should be put at the door at secondo cough. it's so selfish to impose your noises to other people that they shouldn't even have their money back.
@suskistube Unless you take Cage's view that the coughs are just as equally important as the music :) But I know what you mean, it is especially annoying when you buy a recording.
Despite of what many people think - ignorants, I must say - contemporary music is fantastic. Of course it's a big challenge to catch all its greatness and meaning (specially for people who may believe that punk rock was a revolution in music...), but it's so intense, it gets me so close to insanity.. to a higher spirit level, so to say.. it's certainly an unique experience.
I just encountered a recording of a small group performing one of Schnittke's pieces. It made me pull over my car and recollect myself. After spending so much of my life searching for melody in the form of dissonance Schnittke like the others like Stravinsky, who is also on this record, start to be a bit cliche. BUT 40 Seconds of Schnitte's piece slapped my brain with so much pleasure i nearly crashed.
This music is a work of genius. The amalgam of styles is fascinating, of course, but even throughout the work you can hear Schnittke's signature pessimism and voice of utter terror pierce through the insanity. It is as if one were to walk through a museum damaged by an earthquake, with the many artefacts of the many centuries displayed by the tremors and mixed into a potpourri, all covered by the decaying ruins of the museum's structure...
I suggest you two cease bickering: you look dumb in this fashion. Why can't we just enjoy the music posted? It's a wonderful performance, and Schnittke is a fantastic composer as well.
If you can't understand the music, I ask that you don't abandon it at first — continue listening and look for what is beyond the common standards of beauty. Remember Charles Ives: not all beautiful music is "soft armchair music".
Schnittke is not easy to understand. lot of listening is needed to "catch the sound" of his music. It's great anyway. Try the Sonata for Cello and Piano, forgot the opus - bloody good one.
I Agree, this is a very difficult piece for some people depending on their aesthetic. Not everyone will like it. His string quartets are some of my favorites!
This sounds nothing like "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Unlike this, that movie's music was actually fun to listen to. This is disgusting and has no sense what so ever.
Excuse me? "Musically" developed? There is no distinct "developeness" to percept any type of music. Do you need to be a Rock Star to understand any kind of rock music? NO. Before you start criticizing me and challenging whether I have any musical prowess at all, maybe you should think on where you stand on YOUR musical capabilities. I'm pretty sure it's not very far along if you're stuck to slandering my view point on Schnittke.
Excuse me? Since when does my age have anything to do with ANYTHING. DannDaWriter is 17; born same year as me. Look at what he knows.
By seeing how much you commented with, it's apparent that that is ALL you can write/ "explain."
There is NOTHING you can say that would make any justification of why I commented what I did. So how about not Butting in in other replies if you don't want to get smacked around like the child you're acting as.
yes may be DannyDaWriter is 17 as well but somehow his comments have sence of knowing music and understanding its developement from Baroque to Schnittke and how amazingly genious Schnittkes music is.
Danny is the one who actually got me to listen to this stuff. I'm his friend, he goes to my school. You don't think I don't understand this stuff? I just don't like the music. And I am free to express however I want to. So leave me be, antaginizers.

Since you are clearly NOT a genius and age might be the aid in getting a bit more perceptive of ways people express themselves. Certainly, there is a way bigger spectrum of emotions caused by music, that fun and joy. Grow up, kiddo.
Indeed. Schnittke ingeniously combined multiple languages (from the Baroque to the avant-garde, and some non-Western influence as well) to form his own style of music that is both emotionally penetrating and intellectually stimulating.
Another work of his that I really like is his Prelude in memoriam Shostakovich — I love the nod to Luigi Nono with the use of the electroacoustic tape.
Thank you very much for these videos. I would be happy to see also the first part of this piece. I love the (somewhat) symmetric theme after the introduction played by prepared piano. How possibly can a minor second sound so good?
