I dont care about any ideas told here, just about facts and truths: the Marshall Plan is the one thing that the US can be really, really proud of, even now - even if it was just enlightened self interest, the word "enlightened" says it all, and the rest does not matter. The (West-) European quality of life would be something far-far different without it today - as an inhabitant of a former Eastern Bloc country i see and feel the wast difference, witch i cant begin to put into words.
@NightFlash24 I fully agree. I haven't seen the Eastern bloc countries when they were communist as I was a child when the Iron Curtain came down, but even today you can still see a difference (even if it isn't as vast anymore as it was 30 years ago). I'm very grateful to America for helping to build up the wealth of both my country of birth as well as the country I live in, and am therefore disgusted by the Anti-American sentiments of many Western Europeans.
@JudgeGrif america started vietnam,iraq,cambodia,korea and now libya, and thats only for one country.besides in both world wars america came in late giving them an automatic upper hand.
@0nthestroke we can go back, decades. the 1904 Russo-Jap war, was won, by british made ships, and American/British banks, some been jewish banks, helping the Japanese, on grounds of Tzarist segregation and discrimination against Jews in the state. In its defeat, the Tzar lost its iron glove. American banks were funding the German war machine up to the late mid30s. ..we can even go back centuries lol.
Stringent post-war loan conditions (After the initial $6B application was mysteriously 'lost')
The abrupt cutting off of lend-lease.
U.S dollar-imperialism that not only entrenched pro-western regimes in the west, but also threatened (Before the Molotov plan and COMECON) the stability and security of the U.S.S.R's security buffer of E. european satellites' loyalty to Moscow.
It's easy to picture a concerted attack by a U.S enjoying atomic monopoly, too, until 1949, on the USSR's interests
Very traditionalist bias in this series; balance on American belligerence from Soviet eyes are difficult to find and far between; makes a revisionist as myself wretch :(
@JudgeGrif lets not forget that it was Karl Marx obsession with the wrongs of autocratic forms of government, that created the appeal of the communist system. Let us also not forget that it Industry in the west, who elected people into power, who money, and also that America has always supported, non-communist groups, be it dictators or socialists, on grounds of, my enemy`s enemy is a friend. Both sides are to blame, because they NEVER tried to understand one another.. nothing is ever one-sided.
Europe creates new dictators, first with their love of facism in the 1940s and then their love of Karl Marx afterwards.
The U.S. keeps getting called back to Europe to clean-up some new European mess (like the Genocide in the Balkans in the 90s) ; and when the US doesn't do a perfect job - - they end up demonizing the US as evil.
Are there really just two choices in this world? Toleration Communism or Free-market bankster, military industrial complex we have in America now? I love all of the founding principles my country stands for, but the but greedy and selfish war-profiteering assholes have taken over our democracy. The only thing that matters is campaign money, not principles. Our middle class is disappearing and the rich get richer. I can see why communism seemed attractive to many.
@poodtang1 It was an evil system, created by evil people, and populated by many other evil people, but we have as many evil people in the west, we just keep them further from the power to act out. We have the best functioning judicial system, all things considered. We should be proud, but careful about arrogance at times.
You should watch all 24 episodes. I wonder if I'll get them all up some day...
@constructivereconcil They aren't "further from the power to act out." They, the banksters and corrupt evil people keep plunging us into senseless wars to keep up military spending. They own the media and they shape public opinion through CBS and ABC and NBC. They keep portraying everyone as the enemy so we will keep spending trillions on senseless wars. It was the cold war, now it is the "war against terrorist" a nebulous enemy we will never defeat, but will spend trillions fighting.
@constructivereconcil I wonder if the african Americans in your country will agree with your view of the 'best judicial system' cmon, 'democracy' is an evil system, populated by arrogant racist evil people in the west majority of who are in power that's why your country has showed the rest of the world how evil it is, I'm tired of Americans blaming their evil leaders & companies all the time, u will go down with them.
@constructivereconcil you really mean that? keep them far away? money is the law here... we are waging war and living good at the expense of others....
There is a book on the topic, specific to this series. My biggest problem is that while there is balance, it's not always easy to find, and they actually sell this as a resource for high school history classes. Not good. As a matter of fact, this series I think it notable because of its clear narration bias, yet IMO, the evidence as presented makes it clear; the Soviet system was evil.
I'll get the name of the book soon. You might be able to find it at amazon searching for "CNN cold war."
freedom and tyrany? tell that to latin america and Iran...

The Soviet Union is a European creation built on European ideas started by Karl Marx; which spread like a virus to China, and Afghanistan (1970s).
This is another European mess that the United States is still trying to clean-up today!

Let's not forget that it's Europe's obsession with Karl Marx that created the Soviet Union;
and its the Soviet Union that invaded Afghanistan in the 1970s that started the War on Terror that we are on right now!
Russia is yet another European country that started yet another world conflict the United States had to clean-up!

@fivestarmichael EXCUSE ME, but the US doesn't start most World conflicts, Europe does! And the US bails Europe out every time!
Hitler was Europe's idea not the banks
Mussolini was Europe's idea
Marx and Stalin was Europe's idea;
Invading Afghanistan was the Soviet's idea (1970s), again another European country STARTING yet another World Conflict that the US has to clean-up!
And now Vladimir Putin is yet another dictator that the Europeans can't control.
Blame Europe not America.
