This live version is the best performance of this song anytime by anyone. You can feel the pure emotion in it. Not refined, not "studioized". Just pure pain.
Man - I loved that album and was a huge fan of that song before SInead's version (which is excellent as well). I wish this band had developed longer, but I guess that Paul (St. Paul) Peterson didn't get on so well with Prince. It's too bad, any band with Jellybean Johnson and Eric Leeds was going to kick some a**. I've NEVER seen this performance before - thanks for posting it. Now, if only "Mutiny" or "High Fashion" would would show up!
WOW!!!!!!! Paul is bringin' it!!!!!! Eric Leeds is KILLIN' IT with his Sax Solo on this song, but I wish that this live version didn't have the drums. It was perfect the way it was on the album THE FAMILY. Eric can mop the floor with Boney James and Kenny G!!!!!
The Family should have blown up like The Time ir's a shame that Madonna was able to produce great bands and money makers with her label Maverick records while her labelmate Prince could or would not let those acts on Paisley Park out shine him.
The best live version, even better than Prince and Rosie Gaines, or Sinead O'conner. It's like those version were all trying to out-do the original. Erick, espcially, graced the live version with the original proformed solo from the studio recorded version. That's what really made me fall in love with the song, because it sounded so lonley. All the other version were over-produced. That's not what the song was about. It was about lonliness and needing, not conquest and production.
Wrong...the original version belongs to Prince.

St Paul is the best white R&B singer ever!
endicott85 1 year ago 2
@endicott85 Paul is good but You Tube Darryl Hall of Hall and Oates on Sara Smile or Jon B Are U Still Down. Both are better white singers - IMHO
