I keep discovering brilliant artists by happenstance because of the vast reach of the internet. Michael Hedges is a genius who died before his time, like Jeff Buckley. So often the great do die young. Savor his body of work, seven albums. Love it! Any others like him to check out?
me too i love carcass, death and slayer but i saw this guy drunk now i love his work when i would never listen to this kind of music...weird. guess its good to open your mind a bit
You dont get a better or more intense tone than this. I love this version. His willingness to use a few digital effects in just the right manner created such incredable dynamic tension. Despite the fact that I'm a 3 cord willy, Ive always tried to mimic his tone , which of course I cant do but it has certainly had a very positive effect on the sound that I get.. type3 , thanks and please keep it comming.
@MrFaulconbridge Without a doubt his odd tunings and the things he did with them made his sound what it is more than anything, But what Will Ackerman and Steven Miller introduced him to in the studio changed his ideas about production. I only wish Alex DeGrassi would do the same as I believe his live shows suffer from a lack of it. I'd pay good money to see Alex with the same production.
Thanks my brother!!! Good work of the guitarist! Excellent video and very good performance! It very beautiful music! Very well made song, and very nice voice!! Thank you a lot for sharing your nice video!
he changed my life, enhanced it actually. I saw him perform at a small venue, the Carefree in south Florida in the late '80's. WOW I was a fan before that but after, he seemed more like a God to me :D Thank you Michael, you saved me . . .
Follow Through is an awesome...my 6 year old said " hey, i love this song"...Michael's appeal reach every age group. Where can i find an audio recording of this song? Which album is it on? can anyone help me!
@acoustix64 There's no good recording of this song on any released CDs. I remember when I first heard him play this song in 1985, and was hoping upon hope that it would be on Double Planet, but it didn't make it. There is a version of it on "Road to Return" but it's not at all the same and not nearly as good. The version in this video is probably the definitive recording.
Michael is soo freaking good! Whats crazy is that he is the ONE who innovated this peticular style! (Well him Don Ross and Preston Reed were all playing around the same time)
He is definitely the innovator. Don Ross didn't get started really until the late 80's and Preston really only did the over the guitar technique. Michael made it what it is today, no one can do what he did
He was called "the guitarist from another planet" because he could make music with a guitar that didn't make Earthly sense. His music was "Heavy Mental" or Accoustic Thrash. I miss you, Michael!
He is a god. Seriously, who thinks of listening to the song the way he does? He is brilliant. Its a shame that I found out about him 2 days ago. Im glad I did though. <3
I've been listening to music - especially guitar-based music for nearly 50 years now and this guy is a the very top of my list. Man he was freakin good !
I've tried learning this, & the sequence of small hits & plucks & smacks that go into that straightforward (sounding) rhythm is truly awe inspiring. Then he sings on top with expressive variations & nuances. My god.
truly a genius. i have leaned don ross sogs before and these plucking patterns are competelyndifferent and way more complex. i am a drummer and still cant figure out quite what hes doing.
dude. i figured it out. i got it completely now. i was showing my gf when i realized that it consists of starting the hammer with your left index finger on the last chord and end on the next chord. i thought that it was all to do with the right hand but he just taps back and forth doing 16th notes. its actually way easier than i thought. good luck my friend.

@togue777 You know his double CC or BB tuning he used? he gave that open in your face melody with songs like Ritual Dance...

@edthehead83 actually, to be exact, he missed a turn near a cliff and accidentally drove off the cliff.

Michael came up with the approach, technically difficult or not. I have never seen anyone approach the instrument like him. So much creativity.

The rhythm is savage. Love this track. His coolest self-written song (see coolest, not necessarily best).

I'm getting closer, it has to do with Really strong thumb hits on the 6string & hammering notes to create triplets.

IM GETTING IT! But, I still have bad habits hitting with thumb instead of finger or etc.etc. Adding the singing now.
bachmorris 2 years ago
It's all groove, it's not technically difficult. You'll get it. It didn't take me long (mind you I've not played in about a year).

Awesome Musician. This song is so true. Kassandra. Someday when you pull your head out of your ass. you'll understand it.

This song just blows my mind - one of the best acoustic guitar rhythms I've ever heard.
