It was never released on an album; it was on the B-side of 5:15 (single) from Quadrophenia though. It was meant to be on Lifehouse (What became Who's Next)
Does anybody know where I can find the live solo to this song cause I've been trying to learn this song for a long time. If anybody can't find the solo I would be satified to only know what is Pete playing at 3:50-4:00 and 5:47-5:51. Please and Thankyou.
Maybe I've been studying psychology a little bit too long. But I love this performance, and ones by similar bands of this time. But especially this performance.
It feels so real, so raw, so human, and so emotional. I would use the word vulnerable, but not from a insecurity-sense. You can really tell they put their true self on the line for the show.
Many bands now sound guarded, or defensive, like they're doing what they think is cool. They play it safe.
I thing it's cool that after a few years Moon got rid of his high hat completely so he could play every song with two bass drums. It's a shame that the footage and music in this clip are so out of synch. And it's not Youtube's fault either. It was actually sold in this half-assed manner.
why´s moonie laughing at the beginning of the vid?
PS: why do Who songs appear in so many new shows ( CSI, House)?? today´s music aint so bad there´s this gaga guy ( or girl or whatever) , Taylor swift....wait now i understand why LOL
the other day, while listening to "I Can See For Miles", my father, who is a drummer, said keith moons drumming in it doesnt follow any particular pattern. he didnt really like it, or "get" it. i love the drumming in that song for that sole reason. it cant be replicated, and thats where moon's genius shines.
@PAULisDEADMANnumber9 Ironically enough, ICSFM is one of the instances Moon's more orderly drumming. But the Who managed to create Beauty in the Chaos, which is what puts them right up there with the Beatles, Led Zeppeling, the Stones, etc. etc. etc.
Even Neil Peart, who is much more technical and orderly, has cited Moon as an influence. Mention that to your dad. If he doesn't like Peart either... Well, I'm not sure how he can himself a drummer at that point.
@Astrosimi he likes the who, and keith moon, but he said he didnt really understand why it was like that. you get what im sayin? also, hes an avid fan of neil peart, but i mean, who isnt?
Without a doubt, especially live. The Beatles are unparalleled, the Stones awesome in many ways, but i have to say, I reply and have replied the same way at least 1,000 times Mr. rockclimber21...
I'm a girl guitarist, i picked the guitar up because i saw this bouncy little man in the white jumpsuit sweating his heart out on stage. As someone who battles to play a few bloody chords in tune...No way is Pete an average guitarist, he is one of the most exciting players in history, not to mention a rocking composer. charisma, talent, stage presence, what more do you need, you folks are very difficult to please. Just how many of you are up there with Hendrix or Townshend yourselves?
This is a great exemple why hard rock is so good today because it is THIS good since the beggining and it can't get better then The Who!! The founders of Hard Rock!
The Ox was the first player of "lead bass guitar". I saw the original Who line up and many times after. Entwistle and Moon and Daltrey and Townshend were a four man demolition rock and roll rave-up that I've never seen any band surpass!
It is so difficult to say who is the best band in the world. My favorites are The Who, The Rolling Stones, Beatles and Led Zeppelin, all classic bands. @Borat980mis - The Who is my fav rock band of all time for sure, but I am not sure I can agree with you there, I mean, each has it's place. Zep is best for just shit hot rock, Beatles are good for trying to get into a girl's pants, Stones, well, sorry Kieth, nothin doing cept maybe Midnight Rambler. Jimi can play better than any of them, Pete is the most versatile, Page could throw down and still does, I mean, they are all good!!!

pete townshend is in the category of its own along with john moon and roger what those 4 guys were doing on stage was simply magic and definition of rock
people keep talking about how Townsend is dirty on the guitar but have you heard Daletry sing in this song its exactly what a rock singer should sound like powerful but yet remaining on tune
i have found the who and i certainly would'nt say no to somebodys daughter.
One of the best bands ever, definately the best drummer ever. Keith Moon rocks, so does Roger and my god Townsend, how does he do that shit? The guitar isn't an instrument anymore it's an extension of the body. He owns it and can do whatever the fuck he wants with it. ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@GooglePinhead Pete's playing a Gibson SG. It has P-90 pickups as opposed to humbuckers that are usually found in SGs. He only used SGs from about 68-70; he didn't like it when the model changed. He also got rid of the bridge and moved the tailpiece into the bridge position. He made it a wraparound tailpiece/bridge in one. I don't really know why what all he did to it, but you can see the empty holes where the tailpiece used to be.

This is one of my favorite who songs. I just reading about tommy somewhere and i read that this was original written for tommy... I thought this was originally written for the original lifehouse project.
@PAULisDEADMANnumber9 if you're talking underrated, it doesn't get much more underrated than John Entwistle. he is totally overlooked even when people talk about the who
the interesting thing of this song is that is a super mega jam without actually a riff to base on or even a chord progression. (Except for the water and daughter part) It's like building a house without any bricks and they pulled it off.
can't tell if this is one of those times they liked Roger, because there's this solid, brotherly thread between Pete and Keith. Roger almost seems like an island in this video, driven to a some isolated frenzy by the rest of the guys.
the good news is, everybody is doing well here, musically
page was sleepin with a 14 year old at the time , even brought er on tour , thats the reason for the slight page at his finest dont believe? google is yer friend
The Who didn't invent rock music, but they sure just about perfected it. Even early on, with "Substitute" and "My Generation," and especially from "Tommy" onward, The Who exhibited a lyrical maturity far beyond their contemporaries (such as Led Zep, etc.) Just seems like they had some deeper issues on their minds (at least, on Pete's). And whenever I listen to Roger on "Quadrophenia," his is the awesome rock voice that set the standard for the rest - with astonishing power, range and phrasing!
there's a great way Eddie Vedder described Roger Daltrey's voice. He said that a lot of singers voices are like a tree. Lower, they're big and fat and round, but as you get higher they start to get skinnier, until there's nothing, and then he said that Roger's was, and still is, big and fat and wide from top to bottom
Eddie has a great analogy there! Daltrey's higher registers are typically of a magnificent timbre that seems to keep accelerating in power and duration. This may have been honed as necessary from competing with the enormous sonic din those Hiwatts were kicking out - he simply had to project above it. When I hear old Zep, with Plant's painful attempts to hit the highs with power, it just absolutely pales in comparison with Roger. And with Roger, his power comes from an attitude cranked "to 11."
I just love the way at the beginning Keith is bouncing up and down on his drumstool as though he's winding himself up like a kids toy to start playing!! Respect to Moonie!
The greatest real rock band in British history with undoughtably the greatest drummer and lead gitarest of all time I got the isle of whight album when I was 18 iam now 32 and there is still nothing been done better than this to this day thanks dad for playing your old records when I was growing up in the 80s so I didn't have to listern to that gay shit
@jcbdante u are so right mate i thank the old man to for letting me listen to the lps, back in the ninetys,me n my mates used to listen his who lps fucking class.long live rock nroll.i play this concert on dvd through my surrond sond i love it but the ladys dont but thats rock n roll.i tell her to sit in the other room while i play drums with me tv controls n shit.GOOSEBUMPS.
@invaderzimgirl14 , I don't believe it because it's not true! Townsend had his limitations, excellent song writer though, & yes, Townsend is underrated. He isn't in the same league with Page, Hendrix, Stevie Ray or Michael Schenker.
@amstell13 well that's your opinion..mine, mine is that Townsend is the best along with Moon! so, if you want to be a critic be one in your head because, please, i don't want to argue I'm 13 and frankly need to get back to my math homework!!
@amstell13 Psh, Bonham was an overrated drummer. He couldn't hold a candle to Moonie, Buddy Rich, Neal Peart, hell, even Lars Ulrich. Page was pretty good though.
@batosai370 , you definitely don't know what your talking about! Go find Led Zeppelin from 1977 at LA (LA FORUM 6/21/77) & listen to the song The Song Remains The Same from that concert, you will definitely be in awe, because Moon has never played like that ever!
@batosai370 Well, Bonham was technically better—he could keep a straight beat and get into a pocket, for one thing. However, Moon was a better showman and he played more intuitively, and thus was better live, IMO.
@jcbdante and bassist, don't forget bassist. In terms of flexibility I'd give it to JpJ from Zep, but Entwhistle was just mesmerizing. Too bad they never showed him play, only focused on the "stars"
The 6 people who disliked this are losers!!! :P

I don't really know why or what all he did to it, but you can see the empty holes where the tailpiece used to be.

This is one of my favorite who songs. I just reading about tommy somewhere and i read that this was original written for tommy... I thought this was originally written for the original lifehouse project.

pete townsend was a very underestimated guitar player, indded.

One of the best rhythm guitar players in rock music-hands down. Lead guitar players, eh, maybe not.
Live at Leeds is a benchmark that I judge all rhythm guitar players by. Pete smokes it dead!
bigbadbob58 1 year ago 2
@PAULisDEADMANnumber9 if you're talking underrated, it doesn't get much more underrated than John Entwistle. he is totally overlooked even when people talk about the who
freespeech4u2 1 year ago
the interesting thing of this song is that is a super mega jam without actually a riff to base on or even a chord progression. (Except for the water and daughter part) It's like building a house without any bricks and they pulled it off.

i think Pete wrote this song for Roger to sing, he's got these fabulous leads to carry and does so magnificently.
i can't imagine Pete carrying this song as well, unless it was a quiet, acoustic version.
astronomius 2 years ago 3
can't tell if this is one of those times they liked Roger, because there's this solid, brotherly thread between Pete and Keith. Roger almost seems like an island in this video, driven to a some isolated frenzy by the rest of the guys.
the good news is, everybody is doing well here, musically

The Who didn't invent rock music, but they sure just about perfected it. Even early on, with "Substitute" and "My Generation," and especially from "Tommy" onward, The Who exhibited a lyrical maturity far beyond their contemporaries (such as Led Zep, etc.) Just seems like they had some deeper issues on their minds (at least, on Pete's). And whenever I listen to Roger on "Quadrophenia," his is the awesome rock voice that set the standard for the rest - with astonishing power, range and phrasing!
philipatoz 2 years ago 3
there's a great way Eddie Vedder described Roger Daltrey's voice. He said that a lot of singers voices are like a tree. Lower, they're big and fat and round, but as you get higher they start to get skinnier, until there's nothing, and then he said that Roger's was, and still is, big and fat and wide from top to bottom
whatistheretotype 2 years ago 4
Eddie has a great analogy there! Daltrey's higher registers are typically of a magnificent timbre that seems to keep accelerating in power and duration. This may have been honed as necessary from competing with the enormous sonic din those Hiwatts were kicking out - he simply had to project above it. When I hear old Zep, with Plant's painful attempts to hit the highs with power, it just absolutely pales in comparison with Roger. And with Roger, his power comes from an attitude cranked "to 11."

rock 'n' roll cliche FTW

I just love the way at the beginning Keith is bouncing up and down on his drumstool as though he's winding himself up like a kids toy to start playing!! Respect to Moonie!

@jcbdante , What? Towhsend & Moon better than Page & Bonham? I don't think so!
amstell13 1 year ago
@amstell13 well you better believe it!
invaderzimgirl14 1 year ago
@invaderzimgirl14 , I don't believe it because it's not true! Townsend had his limitations, excellent song writer though, & yes, Townsend is underrated. He isn't in the same league with Page, Hendrix, Stevie Ray or Michael Schenker.
amstell13 1 year ago
@amstell13 well that's your opinion..mine, mine is that Townsend is the best along with Moon! so, if you want to be a critic be one in your head because, please, i don't want to argue I'm 13 and frankly need to get back to my math homework!!
invaderzimgirl14 1 year ago
@amstell13 Psh, Bonham was an overrated drummer. He couldn't hold a candle to Moonie, Buddy Rich, Neal Peart, hell, even Lars Ulrich. Page was pretty good though.
batosai370 1 year ago
@batosai370 , you definitely don't know what your talking about! Go find Led Zeppelin from 1977 at LA (LA FORUM 6/21/77) & listen to the song The Song Remains The Same from that concert, you will definitely be in awe, because Moon has never played like that ever!
amstell13 1 year ago
@batosai370 Well, Bonham was technically better—he could keep a straight beat and get into a pocket, for one thing. However, Moon was a better showman and he played more intuitively, and thus was better live, IMO.

@jcbdante and bassist, don't forget bassist. In terms of flexibility I'd give it to JpJ from Zep, but Entwhistle was just mesmerizing. Too bad they never showed him play, only focused on the "stars"
