I'm all new to this, but for bigger drums, or should i say deeper, the use staves (staff) joined together, the frame drum is say 2-5 inches deep, was just wondering the pros and cons of this idea with frame drums.
Of course that would be possible and some makers do this. Also Troyan drums use this technique. I just found that the technique I use is the best for the sound I prefere. Nothing wrong with other techniques ! :o)
It´s just with not so deep frames, like the some bodhráns are, it is also a question of stability. No problem with deep drums but sometimes with frame drums...
Very nice videos Christian - I cant wait to see you stretch a goat onto these lovely frames! :-) You make some really nice drums

yeah i was thinking along the same lines, without the depth it wouldn't be as structial. Thanks for clearing this up.
Could you tell me if you steam the wood first before glueing in the mould.
chefslot 2 years ago
No. If you steam the wood you change the microstructure of the wood and take away the inner (natural) tention of the wood. I like lively frames ;o)
