The irony is that Feminist Majority and all the feminist groups supported the woman-hating Mujahideen butchers in Afghanistan against the Soviet Army, which fought on behalf of a modernizing regime the gave Afghan women equal rights to men. There was no support for the tens of thousands of Afghan militiawomen who fought to the death for their rights against the CIA's cutthroats. Feminists should deal with this first before shedding tears for Afghan women under the mullahs.

What "modernizing regime" would that be? The Soviets were simply a continuation of the czarist feudal system, with the titles changed from "count" and "prince" to "commisar". Soviet subjects were just as oppressed under the apparatchiki as they had been under the nobility, except for Lenin's innovation of starvation as a tool of mass murder.

Cultural relativism is not .applicable. If slavery is wrong it is wrong in every culture. Same with rape, murder, etc. This used to be, still is the argument for much oppression, that it is tradition. Some traditions suck. No. I was asking it as a legitimate question. My impression is that Islamic societies treat women like second class citizens, or worse. If there was more space i would give you examples of why I say that. In what countries is this not true?

I'm pretty sure it's not as bad in Iran as places like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. Of course we also have to keep in mind that "Islamic society" is a very fuzzy and ultimately constructed concept. What about Islamic societies like Dearborn, MI? It's the largest Muslim population outside the Middle East, but I'm sure women have equal rights there. I'm not familiar with the Koran, but what the Koran says about women is largely irrelevent, just as is the Bible's words in the current world.

Your impressions are entirely subjective and based on hear-say. I have lived in a so-called Islamic society. Your are talking in generalities. I could argue that American women are treated like second class citizens too - didn't get the right to vote till 1918, the US has never had a female head of state (comp. to Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh) etc. I am open to your examples but my guess is they are all based on western reportage, not any personal experience which makes them suspect.

"Islamic" is debatable because there are many interpretations on whether any of the practices you mention are "Islamic". Certainly not in my opinion and also the opinion of many other Muslims. Saudi Arabia practices a particularly harsh Wahabi form of Islam which most Muslims do not follow. Not to say we shouldn't be working to stop this stuff but i don't think it is right for Westerners to think they know best what is good for other societies - didn't we learn anything from Iraq???

I agree with you that we can't go all over the world trying to force people to be like us. But those extreme practices are inhuman. It's just the same myth of "humanitarian interventionism," or the "humanitarian empire," where military dominance is given the excuse that it's because we care about the invaded people, when this is just BS. States don't invade other countries because they CARE about them, that's simply not how the State functions.

This kind of "imperialist humanitarianism," or whatever you want to call it, is actually not good for local progress in such countries. For example, in places like Lebanon and Egypt, feminist and gay rights organizations have a really hard time convincing people that their causes are not pro-Western imperialist causes, but are fully indigenous to such countries. And when Israel and Europe and the US brag about their women's rights, it makes it all the much harder for non-Western feminists etc.
