I hope when they do make up their mind they go with channel 7. It sounds more independent.

Didn't they at one time say ABC 7 Eyewitness News? I know WPVI for a time said "from 6 ABC this has been Action News", but then went back to "from Channel 6"

Yeah they switched the branding from ABC 7 to Channel 7 for the newscasts in 2004. Because they want to be more down to earth with New Yorkers. Most people call it Channel 7 so this way its more recognizable, although its less professional, its more recognizable.
