  • I love the way it looks. Too bad the gameplay sucks.

  • Anyone know where I can get a jaguar for a decent deal?

  • Comment removed

  • Just picked up one today. Great console!

Nice review. Cool to hear some of the back story on it.

Managed to get a working one with 4 game, a pad and the cables working for £10. Couldn't believe it.

  • YES! just got my brand new jag today! brand new on ebay for around 100$!

i saw some differences. i got the north-european version, it do not have any switch to change between channel 3 and 4 because in the eu version you just plug the console straight into the tv without any tv switchbox like the NES. and the eu powersupply is like 200 times bigger than the north-american one! But its the best console i ever have!

    (sorry for my bad english)

  • hey will you be getting the cd ad-on sometime? mayby your not going to get it and I would understand

  • the cartridge slot in the jaguar cd drive is for the memory track cartridge, not for games, if you want to save data on cd games you need this cartridge, it is quite expensive, as well. I think this was a bit of an oversight on behalf of the developers of the cd drive.

  • @squirm13 The CD cartridge slot is a thru connector, so it can be used for games, or for the Memory Track

  • The Neo Geo and the megadrive botth had a 16 BIT AND A 8 BIT CPU that does not make them 24 bit they are both 16bit consoles but the Neo Geo had higher Mhz chips and a bunch of very powerfull 2D graphics processors.

  • @NielsShoe Yeah but some people can argue that the Motorolla 68k was actually 32-bit or 24-bit internally. The Neo Geo's 68k was clocked much faster though.

  • The jaguar was better at 3D but the Neo geo could handle larger 2D sprites and it had far more memory in its cartriges allowing more detail, colour, sound effects, sampled music and so on. Tghe jag was really a 16bit console with a 32bit graphics processor and a 64bit blitter chip games were coded in 16bit.

  • @NielsShoe Check out things like the Jaguar Native demo, or Facts demo. The Jaguar is vastly more powerful than the Neo Geo

  • The Jaguar would have been able to rival the PS1, N64 and Saturn.

the main reason it was so difficult to program was not because of its use of multitiple processors as it was desighned to utilize multiple processors from the beginning.

the problem was the fact that there were a few small but majior flaws in the hardware that made it so difficult to program.

  • The Jaguar was incomplete when it launched, there are serious bugs in the chips hence why allot of developers didn't want to spend more time with it.

There was a interview in Retrogamer Magazine once time (the sonic issue) where developers who worked with the Jag mention that it could have rivaled the PS1 had it not been for the serious bugs in hardware.

  • @snake2006 The only real hardware bug on the Jaguar is the network bug. What game developers wanted in hardware, and Atari did not deliver in hardware is totally different.

From the beginning developers wanted a 68030 CPU, more Ram, and a built in CD drive. I would have loved to have seen this, but the extra cost. Personally I think that Atari should have made a better development platform for developers, and added a bigger Rom for a 3D engine and more.

  • @10p6

the Jaguar's underlying hardware was crippled by a flaw in the CPU's memory controller, which prevented code execution out of system RAM. Less severe, but still annoying defects included a buggy UART. The controller flaw could have been mitigated by a mature code-development environment, to unburden the programmer from having to micromanage small chunks of code.

  • Jaguar's development tools left much to the programmer's imagination, as documentation was incomplete. Writing game-code was often an endurance exercise in the tedious assembler.

  • @snake2006 Atari's biggest screw up in my opinion was not making a version of the Falcon with Tom and Jerry built in to it, then making that as the Jaguar development system.

  • ATARI JAGUAR IS THE BEST CONSOLE EVR!!!! LONG LIVE THE JAG!

  • Which is more powerful , the Atari Jaguar or the Neo-Geo AES?

  • @modewr Good question and I'm not sure but I would guess they're close in 2D but the Jag is much more powerful for 3D graphics.

  • @MN12BIRD lets "do the math" the Atari Jaguar is 64 bit. the Neo Geo aes is 24 bit the sega genesis is 16

  • @modewr The Jaguar in CPU terms has the advantage over the AES, but like MN12BIRD said, 2D is pretty similar, yet Jaguar has (limited) 3D. So jaguar basically.

  • @modewr The Jaguar is a lot more powerful than the Neo Geo AES. Not only is it's 68000 clocked slightly faster, it can also use the Risk Object and DSP processors as non 3D CPU. It also has 15 times the amount of ram. Can display more colors, and has nearly unlimited sound channels. The Jag maxes out at 6MB carts (48 Megabits), but with JagPeg compression, can reach about 400 megabits.

  • My Older Brother had 1 ! And yea man = The Controller was Comfortable!

  • i got a jaguar for 60$

  • I got a working jaguar with box and manual, 1 controller, 7 games with all manuals and inserts and a kasumi ninja headband for (get this) FIVE DOLLARS!!! Got it at a flea market!

  • @MrMoneyclips Lucky son'ova monkey. I wish I could catch a break like that.

  • @MrMoneyclips nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @rkoguy hell yea!

  • @MrMoneyclips Awesome!!!!

  • I cant decide what to get a Jaguar or a Saturn which has better games?

  • @oheao As much as I love the Jaguar, I would say go for the Saturn, as it has much more games and a lot of good games.

If you can afford get both, because both are great consoles.

  • I got a Great Deal on A jaguar for $68 with three games, 2 controllers, and hookups.

  • @MrGoomba909 Nice that's not too bad they go for more than that all the time!

  • @MrGoomba909 i got mine for a 40

  • there eventually was a jaguar pro controller that had 6 face buttons and shoulder buttons as well.

  • never got to play jag

  • now that I think about it no Atari system had a cover on the cartridge slot

  • o yes am getting the atari jaguar very soon i think its better than my ps3 and my xbox 360 yes cant wait for it

  • Nice video. Did you know that one of the canceled games for the Jaguar was the original Need for Speed. Sure wish songbird could find the code or just make it for the system.Too bad the system did not last longer there were almost as many canceled game as there were games made for the system. Thank you for your time.

  • Nice video. I have a question though. I have been thinking about getting a Atari Jaguar and a Sega 32X. Which one would you recommend getting first out of the two. Thank you for your time.

  • i have a question what should i get a Saturn or a PS1 i cant decide?

  • @Mr12345678910kid

sega saturns are junk , get a ps1 second generation

  • if you a ps2 the get a saturn

  • depends on what you want to play...

  • jag cd don't work all the time.

  • if you like to buy so many consoles you should buy a hyperscan

  • If you have time, you should get the cd add-on. It would be cool.

  • Comment removed

  • No it isn't. The Jaguar's a lot more powerful than people think but not as much as the Saturn.

  • which one is better atari jaugar or n64 cause im trying to decide which one to get???

  • N64 has tons of great games and they are easy to find. Jag only has a handful of good games and the system and games are really hard to find! You decide!

  • kool thanks yea im mostly going for n64

  • Get Both. N64 is cheaper, easier to collect for and better overall but the Jaguar's got some great games.

  • yeah i got n64 but now im saving up for a great condition jaguar

  • @MN12BIRD N64 FTW. Jaguar was unique, but the N64 was my childhood console

  • where did you find the overlays to print out?

  • Comment removed

  • Nice video. I collect vintage systems and have been thinking about getting either a Atari Jaguar or a 3DO which one would you recommend getting first.

  • 3DO I'm sure has more good games but the Jag is harder to find so if you see one first get it!

  • thank you for the quick response. I forgot to mention that I am also looking at a Sega Master system. Between the Atari Jaguar and a Master system which one would you recommend getting first.

  • @ATARI800XLfan i prefer my 3do

  • i got a boxed jag (mint) with 20 perfect boxed games and a boxed broken jag cd all for free along with all the acsessories boxed all for free, i was really excited to get it but i don't like the console

  • the mega cd model 1 connects to the bottom of the megadrive

  • why did the back of the jag have like 20 pins?

    Ground

    Composite

    L Audio

    R Audio

    Luma

    Chroma

there you go, 6 pins with S-video

  • RGB there's 3 more, RS232, and RJ11 for all kinds of things you can hook up!

  • so technically you can squeeze component out of it? (SCART cable and SCART to component and look at the purty picture)

  • LOL every gaming related thing i search brings up one of your videos :D

Wish i'd found your videos earlier :)

  • what did you think abut avgns review

  • I loved it. He made all the right points. Its hard to program for and most games were bad. But he did mention DooM being the first and best cartridge port of the game. It has a few good games certainly but not enough for most people. Too bad his CD-ROM drive didn't work he really could have ripped on that. I mean having an expensive add on with only a handful of games!

  • I remember back in the day when KB Toys had Atari Jaguars stacked six feet high with a clearance price tag of like 50 bucks. I started to buy one until I realized they didn't even have one single game for sale and had no idea where I could find any, yet still expected to sell it to me. Of course, they didn't sell any and the consoles were probably land-filled somewhere.

  • Damn, if only I was around in them days!

I would have bought one for the sake of I have an Atari Jaguar! (very much a console collector) :D

  • me too!

  • Alymero, atleast it had Cybermorph as pack-in...

  • the Jaguar logo is sick.

  • there are many diffrent chips in the system that add up to 64 bit btu I kinda don't count it as a true 64 bit system.

  • i like the look of it

  • None of the Atari consoles had spring loaded doors for the cartridge slot as far as I know.

  • The main reason it didnt do well is because it sucked

  • Comment removed

  • So you got it for $80 Canadian?

Also, does the controller port have 3 rows of pins? If 2 rows, 15 pins, and a male end on the controller that would be the same as a PC game port.

If the latter, a PC controller may be compatable with PC controllers: the Gravis Xterminator being one of the best ever made IMO. (though the lack of number keys would be an issue)

  • $80 USD it was off EBAY from the States. No its 3 rows of pins the connector is the same length as a DB9 port.

  • Huh, those ports are the same as the DE 15 VGA port on a PC.

  • Bingo. IBM must have had lots lying around off old video cards lol.

  • Interestingly, the UK (not sure on Europ) game port (the old joystic/gamepad port) used the same DE-15 port rather than the DA-15 port used in North America.

I noticed this when I was recently looking for a game port to USB adaptor. (so I can use my old PC controllers)

  • wow dude, this is a really nice review. I actually appreciate you being so thorough and somewhat brief. I always was curious about this system and like the 3do system since i was a kid and heard about them but never knew anyone that had one since my friends and i were so poor lol. thanks.

  • Tha Jaguar is a very complicated 64-bit machine, and none of the games push the system even close to it's technical limits. But the game Skyhammer perhaps pushes the system most. Skyhammer is one of the last games made, long after Atari had given up the console business. This game, among very few others, will show you that the Jaguar beats any other console made in the same era. It would take 3 years before Nintendo would make anything close to it on their sad machines.

  • Yeah Skyhammer looks really impressive.

  • The controller of the Jaguar is actually brilliant. Ofcourse using it means that you have to be able to count to 10, which is a hard task if you never finished grammarschool, so it get's a lot of critic, from the same people who can't spell properly. And like the guy in this video says, it really is nice to hold, it's a great controller. Ofcourse it's very hard to use for those only used to controllers with coloured buttons, like one of those kiddie laptops with songs from winnie the pooh on it.

  • There are so many sorry people who try to make unknown friends by trashing the Jaguar. The people with the most outspoken opinions about the Jaguar have never owned one, never played on one, and often don't even know what it looks like. Fact is, it IS a 64 bit machine, for those who really can do math, and it WAS ahead of its time. There's this other guy one youtube with a 'review' on the Jaguar, his comment section is locked now for being too gay, but if youre reading this, go kill yourself.

  • I need to find one of these someday.

  • I've never had the chance to play an Atari Jaguar. I remember wanting to have one like all the systems released in those 2-3 years.. ( Jag, Sega CD, 32X,)

It seemed like every year there was a new console (more likely an Add-on instead) every year.

I was a very faithful Nintendo, mainly because my mom knew Nintendo rather than Genesis or TG-16, so she stuck with them. Thank God she did!!!

  • While it's still a bad system (thanks to it's limited game library and horrible controller)the Jaguar isn't the worst console in history: Virutal Boy, CD-i, the Atari 5200 were far worse

  • Atari 2600 remained to be one of the greatest consoles in history (par NES)

  • Oops, sorry, this is my brothers account! Sorry Tyler!

  • best system ever

  • the artari jaguar rocks!

  • The Atari Jaguar COULD have rocked, hadn't the hardware been buggy and hadn't most programmers been lazy (the Jaguar used a Motorola 68000 as a main processor, plus different coprocessors: all the shitty Jaguar games you see didn't make use of the coprocessors, and the result was a Genesis-like graphics, much inferior to what the system could do). Had Battlesphere been released in 1994 instead of 2000, that would've helped too.

  • Well, if like you said about lazy programming, why not do better Genesis ports? Like, the best selling on the Genesis port over to the jaguar? The CPU is identical (apart from faster clock speeds?)

  • Just the bridge was the same CPU, this chip is the organisator of the communication between the gfx, sound and main prozessor(s). Also Im sure that SEGA would never let them to Port their Games!

  • Haha, got me there!

Just woulda though since Sega dont do most exclusives games (third party developers) would have said that developers also do games for this since they use the CPU one. :S

  • Why do people spell "is" as "iz", "leave" as "leev" and "read" as "red?"

You have the worst spelling I've ever seen and you're going to complain about pronunciation?

It's "Jag-u-Are" with an English accent if you want to say it all proper and shit. But I say it like the average American. Jag-war. Unless I actually think about and try to say it properly that's what comes out. Deal with it!

  • where did you get it

  • i managed to get a fully boxed jag for my birthday !! :)

altho i love the jag the cybermorph game which came with it sucks lol

next mission is to get the best games

1.avp (as i can remember this game rocks)

    2.?????

    3.?????

    4.????

    5.?????

maybe you could give me some sudgestions?

  • I respectfully disagree about AVP. Wasn't impressive even for its time (this was the age of Doom 2, Descent and System Shock on the PC).

Technologically at the same level as Wolf 3D, but that was much more fun to play.

I think Tempest 2000 was only Jaguar original that wasn't "half-assed".

  • I fail at youtube - my comment above was meant as a reply to this.

To cut to the chase: Get Tempest 2000

  • there were several that I had a blast playing back in the day.

Tempest 2000, Defender 2000, Missile Command 3D, Cannon Fodder, Ultra Vortek, Rayman, Zool 2, Super Burn Out, Val D'Isere Skiing & Snowboarding, Zero 5, Towers II, Iron Soldier 1 & 2, Brutal Sports Football, NBA Jam TE, Atari Karts and Attack of the Mutant Penguins were the ones I played the hell out of.

Battlesphere is supposed to be amazing as well but good luck finding or being able to afford it.

  • Atari Showed up late for the battle. 1993 Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo were leaving and this got trampled by the ps1. and spat on by the n64.

  • Did they show up late... or too early. Think about it I even think they rushed this system out because it was finished ahead of the original plans. It came out like 3 full years before the N64 so why even compare it to that. Of course it got owned by the N64 it was already long gone by the time that came out. Still the PSX was only a year later or a year and a half tops. Being CD based in the first place at the right price (compared to say the 3DO or Saturn) was the right thing to do!

  • The power button actually is a switch, it's not a soft button (but they fooled some people ;) ). The cartridge port has two pins that need to be tied together on the cartridge - that's why it won't turn on without. The 'L' and 'H' is because they used the same shell world wide, and some places used channels 2/3, some used 3/4, and some even defaulted to UHF for some systems. I don't know what the Jaguar actually ended up shipping with, but this saves them some cost.

  • You should track down and do a review of the Neo Geo, because it was also a more expensive than normal uber-system with an interesting history.

  • Do the cartridges have a voltage completion circuit?

  • MN12BIRD the reason why I said it wasn't a 64 bit system cause it had a 68000 bit processer with means it was like 16/32 bit system mainley 32 bit its programing, processer, its chips wre mainley 32 bit and 16 and by the time it was out it was in the era when nintendo and sega were against each other ands its games were like a 16 bits so I would not belive that it was 64 bit system casue of the era it entered, the games , the processers everything

  • I gotcha. I'm just saying comparing it to the N64, a system that's a full 3 years newer is never fair. For 1993 it was the most powerful system on the market no doubt its got much more power than anything else of the time.

  • graet review my friend

  • L and H = "low channel" and "high channel" perhaps? lol

  • atari jaguar was good i had one when i was really young and its rare in the u.k altho i lost it i am now planning to get one soon to add to my console collection !!!

    5/5

  • good review

  • So I assume Mac's scanner wasn't broken this time?

  • I really enjoy Iron Soldier. It took me a while to get the hang of it, though.

Doom is also great for it, definitely one of the best ports of the game. The lack of music in the latter isn't so bad when you factor in how the silence makes it creepier.

  • you know its not really a 64 bit console

    the n64 was

  • Did you know the X-BOX's PentiumIII CPU is actually 32-bit making the X-Box a 32-bit system! Yet everyone would consider it a 128-bit system because that was just the "era" and it was more powerful than the PS2 witch was 128-bit. In the end it all means little to nothing. There are many "64-bit" attributes to the Jag. The system bus is 64-bit, some of the co-processing is 64-bit. No 2x 32-bit processors don't make it "64-bit" but there are more 64-bit attributes to the Jag than the N64.

  • Of course the N64 is more powerful, little to do with its 64-bit CPU and more so other factors. But the N64 is a full 3 years newer than the Jaguar so anyone should expect it to be much more powerful. Keep in mind I can play COD4 and Crysis with better graphics than a PS3 on my "32-bit" PC CPU!

  • Like I said some experts argue that the Jag is 64-bit and others that its not. But in the end the Jaguar was much more powerful than any other system on the market in 1993 so who cares what they said it was. In some ways the SNES is 8-bit, in some ways the Genesis is 32-bit. Its Motorola 6800 has a 32-bit system bus after all. I say a video game or computers systems overall power comes from about a hundred and one factors all combined.

  • For the record, there's a "Pro" controller that has six action face buttons and two triggers. It's supposed to have a much better d-pad than the stock controller, although I don't have a really to own one yet.

  • Cool thats what a few have said in here. That would be a great controller for the Jag by the sounds of it.

  • Gah, I meant that I don't have a "reason" to own one yet. Anyway, not many games used the keypad to its fullest. Only a limited number of games come with overlays. By the way, I'd recommend having an overlay on the keypad at all times, since it makes it VERY comfortable to use. I'd even go so far as to say that the keypad would be great for fighting games...but I don't know if any really use it.

  • You like the design? it's always reminded me of a toilet seat ^_^

I've owned two of them in the past, and the first game I played on it was Theme Park, awesome game and one of the best console versions.

But was it the Jag or the TurboGraphx that Acclaim wanted to release Mortal Kombat on and they declined?

Also I sooo wanted the VR helmet, ghame that was never released.

  • toilet seat with the bowl on top (CD-ROM) eh? LOL heard that one before. I still think it looks alright!

  • Please don't review the Jaguar GAMES until you've actually played them for a few days or so... They deserve a fair shake! ;)

  • :D Kick ass review once again.

  • (I know this is a stupid question) Do you know where I can get an OFFICIAL Nintendo AC Adapter for the SNES? The one with the grey plug at the end of the cord (Ebay doesn't have any)?

  • No clue. I would try any local pawn shops and such.

  • can you review doom?

  • I will for sure!

  • I think you already reviewed Doom.

  • For the SNES and for the 32X yeah.

  • That serial link I think is also used for the Jaguar CD add on.

  • im bidding on some on ebay

  • Good luck man!

  • Yah atari systems have never had springloaded doors for the cargridge slot this disign goes way back to the arari 2600 Now the cartridges for the 2600 had a spring loaded cover on the cartridge itself.

  • awsome video LOVE UR VIDS!!!

  • great review. I'm looking forward to seeing some gameplay for it.

  • Sweet System , How much did that Lot cost you I would love to get that for my collection?

  • It was $80 "Buy it now" for everything in the Jag is here! video. Its funny because I lost 3 auctions before this one poped up and the 3 I lost all went over $100 for the same kinda kit (system and a few games etc)

  • Great review looking forward to seeing the games!

  • as I always said you can't have too many buttons on a controller. but that number pad thing is rediculous. you should have talk about that first

  • very good I just got my jaguar a little while ago, how much was alien vs predator?

  • its like 20 bux on ebay in box

  • Now i remember, there was a Jag controller with 6 face buttons that was released later in the consoles life.

  • that was the pro controller

  • wasn't the xbox 360 built and designed in america?

  • No it wasn't. It was made in china by an american company microsoft.

  • XBOX 360's are built in China.

  • Part of the problem is that the games are poor. Too much crap like Club Drive and White Men Can't Jump were on the system. There were some good games for it, but not enough. Pretty much all the CD games suck with the worst being Highlander from what I have seen. It looks like a toilet seat to me. I see it as wasted potential, but I heard that some of the homebrew titles are pretty good.

  • It was a flop, but had some good games and had its time however short it was. it reminds me of the Saturn i think it was? lots of cpus to share the load but it was so hard to program well for that no developer could be bothered to exploit the potential. great review and a great addition to your collection!

  • i live 10 minates away from sunnyville

  • Great review once more.

Try to hunt down the C.D addon, there are a couple of sweet games for that.

  • Till this day I'm surprised the Jaguar didn't do better. Considering the 3do sold better and had many, many more games, even with its initially insane price. I'm thinking if it wasn't sold as an Atari product it would've done better.

  • good job you actually make the jag seem interesting, i tryed to get into it about 6 months ago but found mostly negative stuff about it so kinda left it alone i might have to check one out now also thats prolly the coolest console box ever.

  • Well, Jaguar had some pretty good games, but those same games were also available (eventually) on other consoles, making them seem a bit less special on Jaguar. I love the controller, personally. I love the quality of the pack-in controllers, as the cords are thicker.

  • I think it's a decent 64-bit system myself, even if it got ranked #5 on GameTrailers' "Top 10 Worst Consoles" list.

  • who cares what gametrailers think, they criticize everything, they said the n-gage sucked because of sidetalking? they didnt talk about games or anything, just the phone, but w/e? lol

  • xbox xbox xbox. Xbox is an American system.

  • uhhh, actually it wasn't built in the US. Also, it probably wasn't designed in the US. Just because the company that supports it is American-based (Microsoft), doesn't automatically imply that it is American.

  • xbox isn't assembled in usa...made in china i think

  • Exactly I said designed AND built in the USA.

  • NO NO NO. NO it isn't. I said designed AND built in the USA. XBOX was built in China like the 360 and virtually everything else today.

  • Close, it was made in Mexico (I checked).

  • I checked the bottom of my XBOX and it was made in China. May have had more than one factory.

  • nice, are you going to review some games?

  • yeah. he said in the video he will review the games for the jaguar as he gets them.
