This is actually not fully correct. When specifically counting, you say shi for four, but in phone numbers, you say yon, so in this case, yon is wrong and shi is correct.
This applies to 7, also - shichi instead, would be correct, as it is counting, but nana would be generally be incorrect.
No, it has nothing to do on where you live and what numbers you say. Most Japanese would say "nana" for seven but "shichi gatsu" for July. You can either say "shi" or "yon" for four but when you say forty, most would say "yon ju."
It's really not that confusing, just takes some practice. When you get into numbering how many things there are, it does get quite a bit, but that is different and you shouldn't learn about it yet until you learn the basic numbers.
Wow... uuuhh... I learned the numbers (what i can remeber of them which is up to six *sweatdrop* a different way... Then again I got a Japanese/english grammar book that I lost T_T... I learned it Ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku... not yon... well, then again it did say it depended on the area or something... *head drop* oh my... how confusing lol
In Japan putting and saying san, sama, chan, kun or other things is a show of respect. it can be very rude not to put one after the persons last or first name depending on the relation ship. MY last name is Chavez if we had just met u would say Chavez-san, but if i was perhaps older than u such as an upperclassman in school u would say Chavez-sama. If you would like more information on this just reply back.
if i would like to say that to my brother ao any other person does it matters then if it''s a boy or a girl , also , to say it to a person you don't know but is older or have the same age as me what do i need to say then ( btw thank you for your respond on my questions )
If it was your older brother you could say onii-chan, but most commonly when its a close relationship you could call them by their first name or say the name and then-kun (if its a boy). Saying san after the persons last name is also most common for people your not close to whether they are older or not. San is a kind of way to say Mr. or Ms. Also for the little brother you could say kohai (usually though its used by upperclassman to talk to younger people)
thank you very much it's been very helpful for me to understant the anime serie's a littlebit more yet i'm sure that there are some special things in the japanese langauge (wrong spelled ) sow if you have some free time please feel free to send some messages to help even further
i have a question : the " kanji art " , can you writh it ?? i think it would be realy cool . i have search on the internet for "honor" in kanji and it's realy cool but tough
no lol. I personely cannot, i just do ALOT of study on japan and i hope to visit by the time im 20. im not as far as to write complicated kanji. but ill look it up and try^^
i think sama is maybe too much of a show of respect. lets just save the sama to god or someone who you idolize. and by the way, it would be chabesu-san or kun. since well, you cant put chavez in japanese
I have it pretty much memorized, but I still need a few seconds to think before I count. lol I need to memorize it a bit more so I can say it without any problem. =]
i have been on holiday to japan a couple of times and also i do karate and you need to be able to speak quite a bit for 1st dan black belt. I can say all the numbers uo to 999,999
if you were to do that you would need to learn all of the language. If you give me your email i will send you all ofthe prases and the japanese counterparts
here i hope this helps with pronounciation 0 = zearo 1 = ichi 2 = knee 3 = san 4 = shi / yon 5 = go (very short o) 6 = rock (spelt roku) 7 = seech (spelt seich) 8 = hatch (spelt hatchi) 9 = koo (spelt kyu) 10 = jew (short "ew" spelt jyu)
Another reason for not putting in the pronounciation was you only need to see it once or twice, it bears no reality to written japanese so it would damage the minimalist look I quite like.
You can hear the pronunciation very clearly and you can repeat it over and over again to learn.
yes but if it is written it is even easier to see how it is pronounced as there are different accents in japanese and the one you sre using is the romani (sp?) Ramanji is for tourists and not the spoken lanuage there.
It depends how they are used for numbers with two pronunciations (kyuu and kuu for 9, shichi and nana for 7, and shi and yon for four) they're used in different places but mean the same number. For example, we say "yon'nin" for four people, because "shi" also means death.
And yes, Japanese took the word zero from English, they do have their own word (Rei) but most often use zero.

Another reason for not putting in the pronounciation was you only need to see it once or twice, it bears no reality to written japanese so it would damage the minimalist look I quite like.
You can hear the pronunciation very clearly and you can repeat it over and over again to learn.
LearnFree2007 4 years ago
yes but if it is written it is even easier to see how it is pronounced as there are different accents in japanese and the one you sre using is the romani (sp?) Ramanji is for tourists and not the spoken lanuage there.
regs1908 4 years ago
why there are two ways for:
4=shi/yon
7=seech/NANA (heard it in other lesson)?
And what about 0=zero (just as it is in English) Is it adopted from English, or it is just the same in these two languages?
clippermouse 3 years ago
It depends how they are used for numbers with two pronunciations (kyuu and kuu for 9, shichi and nana for 7, and shi and yon for four) they're used in different places but mean the same number. For example, we say "yon'nin" for four people, because "shi" also means death.
And yes, Japanese took the word zero from English, they do have their own word (Rei) but most often use zero.
