i can't tell you how much money and time you have saved me. I planted some english roses and because I didnt know how to prune, I think i have ruined them, they flop everywhere and are weedy, i think i pruned too hard the first year because I thought you had to cut them back for them to grow flowers the next summer. so i am letting them do there thing this year and using a lot of string to tie them up. i wish I had known this earlier.
When planting young roses. How long do you let them grow before their first pruning? Would you do it after it's first season, even though there was little growth? I planted them late this year (septemberish). Thanks!
I am growing some David Austins in zone 10 and am working on expanding my rose world to other old roses/antiques. Would you be able to do a "mid season" prune on a shrub rose?

I generally don't prune until the second year. Let them grow and find their way for the first year.

Thank you for the kind words!

Yes you can. You'll do a light trimming and come mid season for us (around July) I'll do a video on it!

Wonderful! Can't wait! AshdownRose videos makes rose care a lot less stressful. Think of all the roses you are saving! :-)

Thanks for the pragmatic approach. I have my roses by a fence and like to keep them higher than usual also.

Good idea. I'll go back and film the rose again this spring and post a follow up video.
Thanks for the suggestion!

I would have loved to see how this grew in the following spring and summer.
