Here Here, it was a golden time. Cheers from Australia. Love it. Sadly Its not the same anymore, sadly the 'outsiders' have commercialised things and I havent seen decent 2nd hand threads in ages. I used to have this black and pink and bone tri panel shirt, it was well wicked...
Stray cats were not && are not rubbish , it was a rockabilly revival band, hence revival! They brought back what had been playing years before in the USA
The Royalty Ballroom used to be in Southgate, North London opposite Southgate tube station, It was a massive venue and a lot of Rockabilly events were held there in the 80's ("All Dayers" were of note!); it then became the Pink Elephant Club for a while. The ballroom scene with Sting in Quadrophenia was filmed there (although it was supposed to be set in Brighton). I understand it is now an LA Fitness club so don't try turning up for any Rockabilly gigs!
The guy at 0.34 was talking about "Outsiders"coming and taking his records, haircut and music. I wonder what happened after records, haircuts and music lose their youthful attraction? Is it now "Outsiders" coming and taking our jobs and housing? I suppose this is entry level bigotry.
@davepenny damm after 25 -30 years ago, i rember buying of this man . he was the dogs bollocks really helpful. iam sure i brought a werluy fairburn 78 from him imported brand new.he was a education in his own right, top man.
Fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this rarity - I never thought I'd ever see this programme again. That's me at 1:14 in Ray Frensham's record shop in Ilford, with my buddies Ken Smith and Mark Edwards and my girl, Tricia. Great days!!!
Well, I don't get out as much as I did then, but when I do go to the Boston Arms or one of the other London rock 'n' roll strongholds, I do inevitably feel that a fresh injection of youthful enthusiasm wouldn't go amiss - we are all such a bunch of cynical old bastards, even if we do keep the faith :-)
Dave, I remember you and Ken and the other guys from Essex who appeared in the film. I don't think there will ever be a repeat of the 80's revival; things just seemed to gel to make it a great scene then. I can't imagine a 3,000 person all day event would be possible now?
Sadly you're probably right. I wonder what it was about the 1970s and 1980s that made thousands of us European teenagers passionate about a music that was, let's face it, dead before most of us had been born? A music that many of us continue to be fanatical about 35 years after the event!
Have you still got any of your vintage Flip threads? I've got mine...I just can't get into them any more :-)
