@shtdcte how old is your copy? Ten originally didn't have the track on (though it was on the european version) but it was added for later copies/re-releases.
Another thing about this song is it contains a little reference to the "Theme from Shaft" by Isaac Hayes. There's a line in that track that goes: "They say this cat Shaft is a baaad mother..." "Shut yo mouth!" "I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft"
For those that don't know the story of this song. The title is named after Pearl Jam's tour bus driver Frank (Can you guess why?). Musically, it's a tribute to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Pearl Jam opened for the band in 1991-1992 and were so insprired by them that they decided to come up with a song in the chili's funk style!
@itsCAKEfan They've toured together,I also read that Eddie was friends with the Chilli Peppers before he joined Pearl Jam. Jack Irons was the Peppers drummer at the time. You probably knew that though lol
Its not about Dahmer its about a bus driver they had during that tour. He use to creep them out with the way he looked and acted so they wondered if he was a serial killer that ate mother fuckers. LMAO!!!! Cook um just to see the look on their face!!
This song was inspired from a tour with the Peppers from their song Freaky Styley but the Peppers actually took it from George Clinton when it was "Funk 'em just to see the look on their face....."
I've heard that this is a tribute to the Peppers, and I've also heard that they're mocking the Peppers. Either way, the part at the end where he's saying "f**k 'em, just to see the look an their face" is straight from the album version of RHCP's song Freaky Styley.
Give it away, give it away, give it away, give it away now lol! I like funk influence in this song. Would have been interesting to hear other songs like this from them as well.
this is hands down one sick, twisted and hilarous song. its amazing how they capture an early 80's jazzy rock sound with awesome lyrics. truely a great song, that diservesmore credit than it gets. -John
"Dirty Frank" was Pearl Jam's tour bus driver in the early days. The band members had an inside joke that he was probably some serial killer and psycho that ate people. Thus the song "Dirty Frank" was born around the same time they were on tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hence the funky feel to the song as a sort of tribute to them..
this song is clearly inspired by the RHCP , " cook'em just to see the look on their face , cook'em just to see the look on their face" , that's exactly Freaky Styley lyrics " fuck'em just to see the look on their face , fuck'em just to see the look on their face " , anyways it's a very nice song !
@ivatori93 I'm pretty sure they started out as a RHCP cover band in their very early days, and then they branched off. I think they opened for RHCP at a gig. The bands are friends I think :)
Love this song... It always sounds to me like Pearl Jam trying to channel the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Reminicent of early Peppers, but with the genious of Pearl Jam...
@dalcyte i do know what i'm talking about. i'm talking about this song. it's so..... so..... bad. it's a 6 minute jam, copying the red hot chili peppers. and they do the "bad mother shut yo mouth" thing (also unoriginal) 3 times. pearl jam isn't a comedy band. i don't get this. it's bad. if this is on ANY version of ten, i hope it was a hidden track. this definitely wouldn't make sense in the context of the album.
@fantasticvegetables haha. OO so making an unoriginal song makes you "so..so..bad" I'm not going to even grace that argument with a response it makes such bad sense in the context of music. Pearl Jam has a sense of humor (WOAH!), and this song is just funny. Maybe if you relaxed a bit and weren't so stuffy about what musicians can and can't produce based on the image that you think they've created for themselves, you could enjoy it a bit more :D
@dalcyte no, making an unoriginal song doesn't make a band "so.. so... bad". pearl jam is fantastic. they have written some amazing songs and will continue to do so. this is a departure from their normal, thoughtful approach to songwriting. i'm sure it was fun for them but, to me, this song sounds uninspired and lazy. i can appreciate humor in music, of course. this song is just a 5 minute and 38 second wank-fest that is, in my opinion, not funny.
@fantasticvegetables I see where you're coming from. I mean, I respectfully disagree. I think that though the music isn't that original, the musicianship is still high-class and not lazy. I mean, regardless of the length, I think the concept of a cannibalistic bus driver is actually really hilarious, and the lyrics are actually really funny. It is a rarity though, and unlike most stuff they've made... they've only played it 10 times in 18 years.
@ghostwhiskey It must be on a new remastered version because it is not on my 10 disc.I have had that cd since 92.I have dirty frank on a B-side cd..So i dont know how it got on ten??I thought they put it on Lost dogs because it was a rare track..I will have to dig my cd out and look at it..It has been a long time since i dug it out of my cd stash.
Pearl jam wrote this song while on tour with RHCP, hence the similarity between the sound of this song and the chilli peppers. They thought that their bus driver was a crazy serial killer like jeff dahmer lol. GREAT SONG!!!
No, I got that back in 1992, first time I got my hands on Pearl Jam's CD. It's only now that I had the chance to publish it on You Tube... I didn't even bother to read the rest of the commentaries... the more we mention it, the better. It's way a coincidence that Pearl Jam was highly under the influence of ex-RHCP's Jack Irons at the time... I think that chances are big that Irons actually stole this song from Kiedis & co.
I was thinking this sounded like something the chili peppers would have done in the 80's. then I heard "I fuck'em just to see the look on their face" which is from Freaky Styley RHCP Circa 1985.
in a book im reading it said this was about there bus driver who they joked about him being a serial killer cuz he had a bunch of beer under his chair after a long drive
