Have you been to Afghanistan? They want peace and I wasn't able to give it to them.

The South Vietnamese were, "fighting for their country back" from the communist NVA etc., sponsored by the Soviets and Red China. And we were helping them. Essentially together we had won. Then we pulled out and the peace collapsed. Even so, you don't know what the overall outcome would have otherwise been.

The war was OVER the minute Kennedy lied to us about the Gulf of Tonkin incident to get us in there to begin with. They fought the Japanese (we tought them how), French and Americans for over 30 years. I know the final outcome would have been worse than 10 years of peace leading to a real Republic

The Vietnam War was coming and it was NOT "over" due to anyone lying about the Gulf of Tonkin incident. After WWII, We simply were not going to let communism completely take over all of S.E. Asia so long as there were enough people living there who did not want that. Would you say the people in N. Korea are living better than those in the South?

@elfkind1, In Afghanistan I agree you can "give" no one peace, unless the majority want it. Not even in the U.S. And yet we have a relatively peaceful country. What you can do is give whoever wants peace, a chance to have peace, which usually requires them to have a representative Govt. and an effective establishment of Self defense. Since WWII, many peaceful people in the world are far better off, and they have countries which genuinely represent them, because we helped them. That is Christian.

What politicians preach is their own or their party's idealism, but pragmatics and doing the best thing at the time in a shifting changing world often requires things differently.
