  • Liked all parts mate....

Eeh... tips ...eeh... not too many but you might wanna consider shortening your drawcord (and/or replacing) from the stuff bags too save weight. Iirc you carry two knives... loose one (figure of speech). Can't think of any more now. Again thanks! Really enjoyed it! Grtz Johan

  • I enjoyed all 4 parts. Thank you for sharing.

  • Really enjoyed this series....all the ideas....what is brand and where can I get one of those incredibly small/light telescoping rods? Thanks for your work!

  • I thinking about triing a super ultra lightweight trip. Thanks for the info.

  • Very VERY interesting and inspiring series. I have to be honest and say that from the outset I thought "what, this guy is taking an hour to go through his SUPER ULTRA LIGHWEIGHT GEAR!" but actually it's very engaging & I don't think needed any editing after seeing all of it. I'm glad I watched it, definitely. I don't think I'd cope with yr sleep mat but have used a poncho-tarp-pole combo with success (risky in Scotland with the type of weather we get here! ) tho' a bivy bag is essential 2 me

  • Where did you purchase the down for your homemade sleeping bag?

  • nice videos. always looking for new ultralite ideas.

  • @singstream Thank you my friend. I hope you were able to pick up a useful idea or two. Best to ya!

  • good idea with the straw seasoning kit. i do the same thing with water purification tabs [i burn the ends to seal it] and keep'em in my Altoids survival kit

  • @CRXluvr Great thinking on using the straws for the water tabs man! Thanks for the useful tip!

  • great videos John! the gear is great.. but most important, it's inexpensive!

i like your videos and i'm taking a lot of great ideas like the sleeping pad you use (windshield reflector), the light and free bottles, and the list goes on and on... i looked into the pen rod a few years back so i'm glad you got it.. it really doesn't get any smaller than that !

  • Really great series! Very creative solutions that you've come up with. I've been thiking about ways to drop some weight from my B.O.B. without sacrificing functionality. I'm ging to go have a closer look at some of your other gear videos.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @CrypticCRICKET Thank you my friend... I appreciate that!

  • first time ive watched yourvidios found them t be great thanx for making them

  • @bigdog32712 Thank you very much friend, I really appreciate that. Glad you liked 'em!

  • Great series! I always enjoy the artful editing and pics in your videos. I also appreciate how you roll, you never try to play yourself off as an know it all expert and your UL videos without being elitist.

  • I've just watched them all. They r gr8 very entertaining and informative, puts a whole new slant on what is needed or not. Can't wait to put it into practice here in Australia. Thanks again John, ur a gr8 teacher

  • @cheekyricho Thank you my friend, I really appreciate that. I'm looking forward to hearing about how you apply your own system to the country you get to explore over there. Australia is an amazing place... sure would love to visit someday! Take good care!

  • You have some awesome ideas here. I love your videos keep them coming.

  • @bellwitch007 Thanks my friend, I really appreciate that!

  • Great information, I watched all of them! the windshild cover great idea I would have never thought of that. I want to lighten up too!

  • @karenchakey Thanks my friend! That windshield protector definitely makes life easier on those chilly nights! Sorry for the super slow reply :-(

  • Great little series John, cant wait for the next vid. take care bro.

  • Excellent!

  • Watched them all brother VERY good stuff there. I really like your new packing style. This is great for an over nighter or two for sure. Maybe even longer with an added stuff sack attached somewhere. I am most impressed on the way you have taken what you have learned here and put it to action. I feel trapped not having the chance to get out at all these day due to many issues at home. The weathers gonna change soon and I'll be really upset then....

  • @dmacken11 Thanks for bearing through all these vids Dave (how do you make an hour video on a minimalist kit?? lol). By the way, thanks for the compliment... I wish I could share back just a fraction of what I've picked up here! It amazes me the wealth of knowledge to be had here on YT... it's like cutting years off of your own learning curve of trial & error.

I do bet you are just aching to get out man! It's been a very busy year for you. There will be plenty of time though my friend :-)

  • Awesome series John. I saw this in my subscription box and had to put them all in my Watch Later queue so I wouldn't miss it. Great stuff. I really enjoyed seeing your lightweight system and your reasoning behind the different gear you've chosen.

    -Will

  • @GunsKnivesSurvival Thanks Brother! This was a really fun way for me to challenge myself and put a different spin on the way I'm used to doing things. Won't work for most situations of course, but it sure has been pleasurable the times that I have gotten to use it. My apologies for the slow reply here... really overextended myself with all the vids I uploaded recently. Better pace myself, eh? ;-)

Hope the week's off to a good start for ya. Take good care my friend!

  • Well I hit the wrong button while typeing my last post. Any way , I would want more multi use items with me but you did give me some ideas. I'm setting up a lumbar pack to carry my survival kit in.

  • @muddog1561 I'm with ya man... we each have our own style that fits our needs. This system is definitely very specific regarding it's conditions/situations of use. Awesome idea on the survival kit by the way!

  • Very intersting series of videos. I wouldn't. want to go out with that little bit of gear, unless it was summer 7

  • huge thumbs up on the series

  • @dragonflyhiker Thank you my friend!

  • Outstanding stuff . Ultra Light weight or S.U.L. has always interested me...especially now since old sports injuries are coming back to haunt me. You nailed it in this series...and can't wait for the review on that 2 ounce rod...wow! Thanks John. Peace!

  • @TroutManOutdoors Thank you very much my friend! Hopefully I can get a review up on that little rod before long... may wait a few days though... been posting too many vids lately lol. Apologies for the slow reply by the way. Peace!

  • Top-Notch series sir!

  • This was really great! Thank You very much for sharing that stuff.

  • @Druetty Thank you my friend! It's always a pleasure. Thanks for watching!

  • Very cool series, love that little fishing rod, excellent. Have learned alot from your videos and have enjoyed the adventures you took us on. Take care and have a great day my friend.

  • Nice series!

  • @mudtoa Thanks Bro!

  • I'm still with you... Where's part five? I'm ready for more. Is that all? : o) That little fishing pole you teased us with looks super cool, looking forward to that. I thought you were going to show us some secret ninja stuff. Great series John, Thanks so much for sharing all your DIY wizardry.. : )

  • @saradreaming You're such a glutton for punishment! Haha! Actually, thank you very much for saying that Sara... I was hesitant to post a 4 part series on this little pack (less is more did I say?? hehe). Be getting a review of that little rod up before long here... better wait a few days though before everyone gets sick of seeing my face! ;-0

P.S. Sorry for the super slow reply my dear friend... I overextended myself with posting too many vids too close together! Forgive me? ;-)

  • Cool tela rod would be a great survival kit item. Great stuff John.

  • @medicjimr Thank you Jim. I agree, that little rod is perfect for a survival kit (sure beats using a tree branch lol). Hoping to get a review up soon on it. Sorry for the slow reply buddy. Hope all is going well for you and yours! :-)

  • @intenseangler Heck I have been slow watching them. Be safe my friend

  • @medicjimr Lol. Never a problem buddy :-) Knowing how busy you are, it's an honor that you watch them at all my friend. God Bless!

  • Outstanding ! really was a pleasure watching this series. Gave me some good ideas. Thanks !

  • @Cragdwella Thanks Brother! Loved your last trip video by the way! Hmm... in fact I just may have to watch that again later ;-) Peace Bro!

  • Great series John. I picked up a few ideas and that's what it's all about. Speaking of memory cards and extra batteries, yes, we do shoot a LOT of video that is never seen. Viewers who don’t do the videos you have no idea how much video is shot but not used. BTW, I love my StickPic.

  • @Woodenarrows Thanks Jim. It is crazy how much footage gets left unused! I remember my first several videos before figuring out how to edit... just shoot and post away! Lol

P.S. Sorry for the slow reply my friend... I uploaded too many videos and overwhelmed myself lol.

  • Great series Brother!!...So when's the outdoor channel picking you up buddy!! they need ya! Thanks for all your effort, and time!

  • @TomsBackwoods Thanks Bro! As far as the Outdoor Channel goes... I'm thinking that they'd have to run pretty darn low on talent before they call me! Haha!

  • Loved this series. Thanks man!

  • @WelcomeToMyDream My pleasure! Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care man.....

  • Do you ever run into predators ion you hikes or camping trips? I used to hunt alot and have been stalked on more than one occasion by what I am guessing was a cougar. I had seen sign of one earlier, and I think I spooked off it's meal. Not a great feeling knowing you are being stalked, even with a gun!.lol I just wondered if anything like that has happened to you, and if needed, how would you defend yourslf?

  • @rondygal The best way that I've found for deterring wild animals is to have my video camera in my hand... every critter in the forest seems to instantly disappear! LOL

I know what you mean though... it isn't the best feeling in the world to know that you are being stalked by a large predator! It's ironic that you mention your experience with a cougar... I have a video where I talk about a similar encounter. It's called "An Experience To Remember"... you'll get a kick out of it.

    Take care!

  • The little fishin' rod is so cool man! You're stylin' brother. So many advantages there livin' in the south :o) I have to admit. I could never go that lite and or go the same route. I would be dead before the nite was done...haha! It seems to work for you and that is great brother. Awesome series and very well done my friend :o)

  • wow! very eye opening. just things like not carrying the whole bottle of aqua tabs, the seasoning straws, wow. great, great ideas. very cool.

  • @briargoatkilla Thanks Neil... I appreciate that man! It's always those little tips/tricks that I love finding myself as well :-)

Hope your week's going good Brother!

  • Great job on the series John! I very much enjoyed them. it's videos like this, that make YouTube a success my friend. That little fishing pole is pretty freaken awesome dude. Thanks for the new vids man keep em' coming and I'll be watching as always :]

  • @meatmangary Thanks my Brother!

  • Couldn't sleep and was delighted seeing these newly loaded videos. Thanks, right off, for the channel recommendation. I really enjoyed every video, John. It was quite an education. ThankU. Ironic, too, that for the last few days I've been working on my old hip-pack. Been sewing on attachment points and adding cababilities to the belt portion to carry the incidentals. I was going off your first video as a guide, too. This is just icing on the cake. Great series. Now I want to go hiking. Best2ya.

  • @rainbowhiker You're very welcome for the recommendation my friend... gotta give credit where credit is due :-) That pot was the perfect addition to this pack... couldn't have done without it.

Thank you for the compliments on this series John. I originally meant for it to only be 1 part, but I somehow turned a "minimalist" gear review into an hour! ;-0

That is ironic that you were working on your hip pack. Looking forward to hearing about/seeing it! Still think your backpack was awesome btw!

  • cant wait for the rod review.

  • This is a fishing pole? Looks like a cigar case rather :o) You really have some great toys to play with outdoors ... Yep, agreed: change is more fun!

    Thanks & CU, TIm

  • @steintanz It is indeed a fishing pole my friend... and a really nice one at that! (I already had some help from my finny friends testing it out hehe). And I agree... even with trying to reduce all my gear, I still have lots of fun toys to play with ;-)

Thanks for all the great comments my friend! I always enjoy hearing from, and talking to you :-)
