The gas price dropped dramatically, even here in Canada, after the huge crash in August of 2008, I am sick of hearing people say gas was $X before the 'liberals' or 'Obama' took over, it was even higher during Bush for quite a while, people have short memories it seems. And like the government has any pull over the gas price, the gas companies may waiver the price to help one party over the other, though that's because you are not a democracy anymore.

@RobertPhillpott Uh...no. Actually $1.80 would be more accurate. At the VERY end of Bush's term in office, gas dropped really low to about $1.80 if you average it out. In my area, it was about $1.59, in other areas in Los Angeles it was as lows s $1.26. You're referring to about a year before this when the gas prices did go up like crazy when Bush was in office, but towards the end, right before Obama took office, they went down...only to come back up one dollar in a couple months.
@mario54671 Actually... no. The last time the gas was $1.80 was in 2004, when the US invaded Iraq. In the period of time that you claim gas was $1.26 it was actually closer to $3.50. The lowest gas price in 2008 was $2.80. And that's all according to about five or six different charts from different sources I've been looking at. Thirdly, whether the founding fathers were or were not opposed to a direct tax on income is irrelevant. The founding fathers were aware that they could not in one single document provide for all future eventualities and necessities. That is why they prescribed an amendment process within the Constitution (see Article 5). In 1913 the American people (acting either by direct vote or through their duly elected legislatures) did just that when the required 3/4 of the states ratified the amendment.
That amendment states as follows: "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration." The only thing this amendment actually did was to remove the requirement (found in Article 1 Section 9) that income taxes by apportioned among the states according to their respective populations.
Congress always had the power to lay an income tax. Arguably the system that Congress has adopted is far too complex, rewards stupid people for breeding through subsidies mislabeled as tax credits (EITC), and should be greatly simplified b/c the current tax code invites skulduggery and corruption,
but that does not mean that Congress lacks the power to tax income or that customs duties were envisioned by the founding fathers as the sole source of federal revenue (a notion directly refuted by any common sense reading of Article 1 Section 8). The next time you attempt to debate the Constitution you'd do well to choose someone who didn't earn an A in Constitutional law. It's you that needs to read (many books as opposed to just "a book") and educate yourself.

The gas price dropped dramatically, even here in Canada, after the huge crash in August of 2008, I am sick of hearing people say gas was $X before the 'liberals' or 'Obama' took over, it was even higher during Bush for quite a while, people have short memories it seems. And like the government has any pull over the gas price, the gas companies may waiver the price to help one party over the other, though that's because you are not a democracy anymore.

@RobertPhillpott Uh...no. Actually $1.80 would be more accurate. At the VERY end of Bush's term in office, gas dropped really low to about $1.80 if you average it out. In my area, it was about $1.59, in other areas in Los Angeles it was as lows s $1.26. You're referring to about a year before this when the gas prices did go up like crazy when Bush was in office, but towards the end, right before Obama took office, they went down...only to come back up one dollar in a couple months.

The lowest gas price in 2008 was $2.80. And that's all according to about five or six different charts from different sources I've been looking at. Not to mention the fact that I live and drive in southern california.

Look at the unholy union between big business and government, where the best, most efficient companies don't come out on top. The ones with the most lobbyists do, like General Electric. Look at the size of government, notably the growth of government under Obama. Look at the impending crisis (and cost) of Obamacare. Capitalism is ever-shrinking in America, sadly.

@roonalwazlib Why don't you read a book and educate yourself. You will note that there is NOTHING mentioned about "Free Trade" in the U.S. Constitution. In fact, there is no mention of a personal income tax mentioned there, either.
Know why?
The Founding Fathers expected the revenue necessary for the basic governmental infrastructure to come from duties. (Article 1 Sect. 8) a duty is a kind of tax, often associated with customs; a tax on certain items purchased abroad.

Free markets weren't mentioned in the Constitution either and yet we have them and they've helped to make this nation prosperous as well. Secondly, I never said anything about personal income tax. I happen to believe they should lowered for all income brackets and that many deductions should eliminated.

The "necessary and proper clause of that same article goes on to state: "The Congress shall have power... To make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this Constitution in the government of the United States, or in any department or officer thereof." Income taxation has been regarded by many as necessary for Congress to carry out its powers.

Thirdly, whether the founding fathers were or were not opposed to a direct tax on income is irrelevant. The founding fathers were aware that they could not in one single document provide for all future eventualities and necessities. That is why they prescribed an amendment process within the Constitution (see Article 5). In 1913 the American people (acting either by direct vote or through their duly elected legislatures) did just that when the required 3/4 of the states ratified the amendment.

The only thing this amendment actually did was to remove the requirement (found in Article 1 Section 9) that income taxes by apportioned among the states according to their respective populations.
