I was outback at my Grandfathers yard last year, I heard the loud pecking sound, looked up the the trees and saw THE biggest pecker ever. It had to be atleast 3-4 feet long. his eye starred me down then I ran!
Yes! I saw one of those in my backyard in Norwood, Ma when I was 15 years old or so. It was HUGE!...but I was the only one who saw it, so no one believed me and we haven't seen another one since. Nice work.
Cool footage. I caught about 4 seconds of a woodpecker on film a couple of years ago and then ran around to the other side of the house to try and get a better shot and he was gone when I got there. I've not seen another one since. They're a very rare sighting around here.

The blue jays try to bully all the other birds around, but they don't mess with the woodpeckers.

He is huge! They do become pesty when they start going all at once!

Luckily he's the only one, and he's not around that often.

They really are huge... and LOUD. There were one or two hanging around my parents' house in Hampden, and the pecking scared the dog half to death.

My dog's just scared of the vacuum cleaner.

I had woodpeckers from time to time in the midwest, not in CA though

No woodpeckers around here, but sometimes they're in the mountains... although none of them look quite as cool as that one!
