You start with 4, but can recruit 2 more NPCs over the quest's duration. They require a lot to nurture to potency though, as usually they're more or less destitute when they join your party.

As for your duration situation you could just follow the RPG/Rogue policy of keeping playing until you just die (accidentally). Honestly I nearly lost all interest when sweet pastries weren't involved with the quest.
this has been vary helpful to me but you have not explained HOW you are eating and casting spells. I starved to death and I had 5 bags of food.
How long do spells last? The flame spell seemed to last a LONG time.

The spell you're using right now creates a magic weapon, a sword made of fire.
This game dosen't really remind me of D&D, not enough instant death traps right behind the first door.

In Baldur's Gate clerics were able to summon weapons, and that game followed D&D very well.
