The entire area constantly gets underwater and is very slick and you'd get stuck trying to walk across it. The tires were 33x15x12.5 BFG AT KOs (relatively new), but unlike many Fords with limited slips my diffs were both open. I have since installed a rear locker which has greatly improved my vehicles off-road performance.
@thelasthallow -- The surface has a lot to do with it, too. A friend and I were both out with MT's (me- Destination MT's, him- KM2's) and we got into some weird mud that looked easy enough but it was like ice. Search for my vid "Mystery Mud".
@DeRochaJ -- Don't grab it while it's still under tension. Though I probably would not have phrased it quite as harshly, I agree with bmxstreet15. Have fun, but stay safe out there!
A perfect example of what NOT to do when winching. The guy sitting there watching could have been seriously injured if the cable had have snapped. I recommend toweling any cable under load. (drape a towel over it)
Sorry to disappoint you on the safety, but the situation/pull was relatively easy with the winch barely breaking a sweat. The winch cable was spooled out about 90ft with sand weights on both lines, unfortunately the person on the camera didn't get any of this in his shot.
The angle of the pull is also very hard to see in the video, but was such that the cable was 7'+ to the side of the person in the middle. As you can see in the video the pull was extremely easy and only needed because of the complete lack of traction in the slick mud.
Obviously when really stuck in deep mud that really strains the winch we have everyone far away from both vehicles and open the hoods for an extra measure of safety. Again it all depends on the situation and this situations was mild.

This would be a great time to trade in that Ford for a new JK.

@bmxstreet15 Yeah he does not look like the sharpest tool in the shed, or the skinniest for that matter.
