Ants are relatively strong if you take into account their own weights, but zombie ants are much stronger, more resilient, dont feel pain and can "infect" healthy ants.
WTF would i do if a zombie colony showed up in my house? kill them? again?
they are actually not fighting. when a fellow worker ant stumbles upon another ant with an parasitic infection, the ant carries the zombie ant far away to let it die. so the zombie ant does not infect anymore ants with in the colony.
The one attached and not moving is infected by a parasite. The parasite grows inside the ant and programs the ant to crawl to the edge of a blade of grass and clamp to it, allowing it to be eaten by a passing mammal. However this ant has clamped onto another ants leg. Simple explanation.
i think it was just a normal ant fight. one is probably from a seperate colony. Unless you live in the amazon i dont think the one ant is infected. Still a pretty cool vid though.
"I'll literally bite your Fuc*kin eyes out if you don't let go of my FUC*IN LEG djsahbhiufeabjhfiuheggfnchjibedhvkjhafruyigyreaiugviueiuvvreiugvyyrebu"
neither of these are a zombie ant... Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (the parasitic fungi which infects ants) only forces the ants to reach a high altitude, not to fight.
the slow moving ant is infected with the cordyceps fungus. the fungus actually makes them want to bite other ants so they get infected, and when its about to die it programs the ant to climb high up in a tree. so when the corpse is rotting, the fungus grows and spreads the spores all over the place
Looks like a normal ant fight to me. I've read books on ants as a kid and even watched them longer than just 10 mins at a time. They are probably from different colonies and happened to cross paths. Once an ant bites on to a limb they are not going to let go for a long time. Ants can carry more than their body weight so that's why that ant was able to carry the other ant in that submission hold :P
the one with the 'stick' is the zombie ant.. It is infected with a kind of fungus called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis.. It turns ants into zombies.. and then the infected ant eventually dies...
@LuciantheGrim : This was outside Chicago about 35 min southwest. Cordyceps unilateralis is found in tropical climates. link - wiki/Cordyceps_unilateralis
It looks as though the infected ant bit down on the other ant's leg, and then the muscle entropy took effect, which prevents the infected ant from releasing its jaws. That's a very interesting catch.
@CaseyVenn : Indeed interesting because I didn't think Illinois or North America had the fungus that attacks ants; but I'm no ant expert... Could just have been a random ant gone bat shit crazy...
@Pogoc7 I've heard there are many varieties of cordyceps, so it's possible it could have adapted to the environment. That, or, like you said, it could have just gone crazy. Either way, though, absolutely fascinating.
