Oh my God! I've never heard about these guys! And they take their name after my favorite British film (or the Kipling poem, since my favorite film also took its name from that poem). This is some awesome stuff.
I had this album on LP when it came out in '70. Glad to see it appear here for others to find. Terry Smith was a wonderful guitarist, and Dick Morrissey and Dave Quincy handled the reeds quite well. One of the great overlooked guitar solos is Smith's work on Shadows and Echoes from IF2. The first three releases and Waterfall are all worth searching for. Amazon usually carries them if your local stores don't. In NYC, J&R carry them as well from time to time.

Was just too young (and too poor) for these, although I had a track on an Island sampler I bought second hand for ten bob which I really liked. This is great too, can you still get their albums?
Discovered this band on seeing a 3 line (yes!) write up in the Melody Maker in the sixties and picked out the words - Dick Morrisey - Electronic - Jazz. So went to see them live and was hooked. Heaven!!! World class!!! So different, so creative, so good. And nice guys to discuss music with. Seen nothing better since. Still love my 4 vinyl LPs.
No doubt if they had been American our meediah would have been brown-nosing all over them instead of totally ingnoring them. Am I bitter? Definitely!
great shroom tune from my HIGH school daze, microdot too, mellowed u right out, should have played live more in the states. played here in Chi. , Ten Years After , Quatermass ,and If, missed it, too young to drive then. Shit!
Terry Smith - man, what a player! I still have every IF album and CD in my collection. Everytime I listen to their music, I realize just how lucky and grateful I was, and still am, that I was introduced to them all those years ago. Music like this will never age or die.
Oh man; your last statement was just what I thought all the time since I was lucky to know a young lady in my local record store who introduced me to IF and kept me informed about everything new that was issued. This is one of the tunes I'd like to be played on my funeral.
@kurtmiezi I was just listening to IF again the other night (I feature them very regularly on my radio show): they had to be the UK's best ever jazz/rock outfit. Keef Hartley Band, Alan Bown, Walrus, Blodwyn Pig, Heaven, Delivery, etc etc, were all fantastic, but IF just had a special magic that set them apart from the others.
@Leonecon I salute you for featuring IF on your radio show. IF was and still is better than a lot of bands which had/has more airwaves. Go figure ! ..
@koscina5 Absolutely! There wasn't a weak player in the band. Quincy and Morrissey made a fantastic team. Such a pity Morrissey died a while back. There is a new live If album called "Fibonacci's Number" on Repertoire. Brilliant!!
GREAT TRACK. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction: Drummer Dennis Elliott went on to join Foreigner. Then his replacement Cliff Davies left to join Ted Nugent!

For some reason the music almost reminds me of The Keef Hartley Band

@plastiqueadapte Thanks for that. Will always continue to feature them on my show. They were just too good to not share with people!

@Leonecon Completely agree with you about Terry Smith.
But what about the sax and flute?
This band should be so well known. What a crime.

I personally thought Dennis Elliott's talent shines more here than when he was with Foreigner

Half of the last IF line up went off with ted nugent including the manager, confirming Dicks fears that IF had become merely a rock band

What a great song, what a great band !
Too bad the original formation doesn't exist anymore ( I think two of theoriginal line up passed away ). Fortunately the music still lives.
