By the way the usual size in America (in 60's, 70's): 383 cu, 427 cu, 454 cu, maybe 500 cu.

@TheBikefighter the Cubic inches doesn't have anything to do with an engine being a small block or big block. A 400 Chevy for example is a small block while the 396 is a big block. The difference is the size of the block not the cubic inches or liters.

"big block" and "small block" refer to the width of the journal, not the displacement of the engine. Larger journal width accommodates for a flatter and higher torque curve, so it's easier to get big torque out of a big block than it is a small block. The new vettes have displacements around 427ci, but they use a short journal, small block engine. Back in the day, well optioned chevelles came with 396ci large journal, big block engines.
