Albeit a fine rendering, this triumphalist 'hymn' is perhaps the most egregious example of the malignancy that Christian militancy contiinues to represent. It's the victors' jubilant celebration of killing, maiming and cruelly crushing hundreds of thousands of their American brothers. An entire part of our culture was trodden underfoot and its history obliterated for political advantage, using 'Christian' morality and slavery as a pretext! How understandable, the glee of this LDS choir!

We sang this song at every high school graduation ceremony and it still remains a favorite of my father's...and mine. He always said he wants this sung by our high school choir at his funeral and will be honored to oblige this request. As hard as it will be to sing it for my father...I will be comforted that it was this song he has chosen.

I lived in Utah from '68 to '70, but was too young to appreciate the treasure of the Morman Tabernacle Chior. It is my dream to return to experience them in person, with my utmost dream to be able to see/hear them perform my favorite hymn, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, before I die. There is no better!

This song was part of nearly every major choral concert I've participated in that wasn't Christmas. I first sang it at church at the end of 6th grade, end of elementary where I grew up. It was the last song I sang as a member of my middle school choir, and the last song I sang, at commencement, as a member of my HS choir. I hope one day soon to sing it again as a member of my community choir. Thank you for posting this, it stirs me today as it did when I first heard it nearly 40 years ago.

This is my favorite arrangement of this song! We started singing this the day of 9-11 when I was a senior in high school and sang it at our next choir concert. Such a great song and rendition by far!

Here was the last 3 of a huge list when just doing a search on 'pride' in the Bible.

Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

1Timothy 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

You can also get a huge list from the word 'haughty', related to pride. Pride is often described in the Bible, where the actual word pride is not used as well. The fall of satan was because of pride, where he wanted to be like 'the most high'. Reading the Bible as a whole it's easy to come to the conclusion God detests pride.

If you knew much about the Bible, you would also know why there is the use of unleavened bread in ceremonies. Bread with yeast is a symbolic representation of pride (puffed up). This is also the reason it is blasphemous to use bread with yeast in what you would call sacrament. Using water rather than wine defeats the point as well.

I can do better than a 'little more research', I've lived among them all my life. When you say 'we', I hope you aren't referring to Mormons themselves, but rather the 'official' Mormon stance on drinking. To get to the point, it really doesn't matter what your excuse is, but since the Mormon god, spirit and gospel are false ones anyway, using bread and water for 'sacrament' is a less significant or important matter.

My Father sang in The Choir for several years. I myself was honored to sing in the Mormon Youth Choir and Symphony. Say what you wish about Mormons, but we do know how to raise a glorious noise unto the Lord!
