The murder of John Lennon was one of the saddest days of my life, as it was for millions of people all over the world.
The true heart and genius of Paul in this song is absolutely stunning. That he was able to convey on such a personal level his sense of loss, and transform that to lyric and song so beautifully, is just astounding.
It allows us all a way to deal with our grief now that we must continue on without John.
@Balertwine The fucking government took him from us because he made us feel happy. With those fucking satanists running our lives and making it a living fucking hell, we can very be happy. Lets blow their guts out.
The last time I remember it bringing me to tears was when we were playing Amoebe records store in Los Angeles and I was singing 'Here Today' for John,[...]. I was holding it together until I looked into the audience [......]. I just saw this girl who had totally lost it and was weeping and it got me. I tried to look away and forget it but it was impossible - I just went with her.

"Here Today," was based on a song Paul wrote for John. he refers to "the night that we cried." a night in Florida when he & John spent a nigh didn't know what to do with it, so we stayed up all night talking, and at some point early in the morning, I think we must have touched on some emotional points, and ended up crying,

Paul is such a gentle man.Even after all the nasty things John said and sang about him.Paul could hide,no "understand" John for what he was.A troubled soul.Beautiful.
Such an amazing song. "What about the night we cried...we never understood a word" refers to when they were told Stu Sutcliffe had died of a brain hemorrage.

Amazing how the greatest musician alive today who sells out the greatest concert areas in world can give one of his best emotional performances in such a small location. Very face to face and more personal. That's when you can say, " I was one of the few who was there that happened". The yapping stupid bitch with the cell phone does not deserve to be there. Please escort her out.
What a moving performance of such a beautiful tribute to John. That said, I can not believe the woman you can hear on the audio making cell phone calls while Paul McCartney is giving a live performance. That is pathetic IMO. She's lucky I wasn't next to her because if someone is making calls while Paul is playing in front of me, that phone is going to be broken on the floor.
To be honest with you, I was there, third row near his piano. After the song finished he went and grabbed a towel and wiped his eyes. His comment to us is that it's okay to cry, we're all adults we can cry if we want to. Many of us were.
Very touching to see this. If you see interviews with Paul and see the way he talks about John, you can tell he really loved John and he's never really gotten over his death. I mean, how could he?
Paul said more than once that John was a central figure in his life, and always would be. You also have to take into account that the man is getting on in years now, and has lost several people who meant a great deal to him. That would be hard for anyone, regardless of who they are.
Sounds more like a song for Linda. Lennon and McCartney were always singing about one thing and saying it was about another. Remember Get Back? Paul said Loretta wasn't Yoko but we're pretty sure it was. Hey Jude. Paul said it was about Julian Lennon but John was sure it was about him. "Here Today". Paul says it was about John but I'll bet it was about his late wife Linda. I think Paul must feel pretty damn alone in the world at this point and very human.
Never was. It was always about Julian. There were a few songs that John thought were about him and his relationship with Yoko, Too Many People being one of them. Hey Jude actually started as Hey Jules, Paul wanted to do something to comfort a little boy while his parents were going through a divorce.
Paul has said that it was about Julian, but remember the interview where he stated that "Hey Jude" was one of the songs that choked him up because it reminded him of John. I think John knew him better than anyone. They spent 30 odd years in each other's back pocket. I will side with John on this one.
"Hey Jude" Hey John. Don't make it bad. You have found her, now go and get her.
@turntapzap Sorry I don't remember any interview like that but it would remind him of the divorce. It was John who said it was like, not saying that Paul told him to, Paul was saying it was okay for him to go after Yoko. At that time John had discovered heroin and wanted little to do with The Beatles. Cynthia Lennon also backs up the Julian story in her book and interviews.
I wouldn't be surpised if he started with Julian in mind, but then found out it can relate to John as well. That's why I think it's about both. But you got it wrong why it reminds him of John. Not so much the lyrics but the way John influenced his writing. Paul played it for John and there was a part he didn't like so he offered to fix it, but John said "No it was the best part." He sings about that in My Brave face. "...since you went away I have this inclination not to change a single thing.."
Thanks. I don't even think Paul's done it on purpose. Many of their songs have dual meaning which is because every idea you start with writing, almost certainly takes you on a hole different level. Somewhere unexpected.
fuck that cunt sitting in front row.. n bullshitting on a cellphone. let alone TALKING ABOUT THAT PHONECALL MID SONG! seriously she needs 2 get slapped. great song paul..saw him in citi 2 times last month it was amaziing he chocked up a bit then too. n this song IS NOT ABOUT LINDA its about john!

i heard he started dedicating this song to linda and john so yea i think he was crying because of linda not john i mean johns a friend but your love of your life is the love of your life he got out of a crappy relationship i bet he misses linda a lot not to say he doesnt miss john im sure he does but yea
And another thing. To fight over Paul and John is just plain stupid. I have had some fierciest arguments with my best buddies. We are still best friends. You must also understand Paul is getting old, he reminisce a lot. Do you never? Gosh I am still just 39 but I do get sentimental thinking about past and people that I miss. Sorry about English. It's not my native language.
I agree John would write a song, and I am sure it would be lovely cause he was good at balads. If there was a difference between their songwriting it's that John was often writing about his feelings, whereas Paul was coming up with stories. Soft Paul and hard John is BS really.
golly this is so beautiful. now here's a thought. let's say, IF and only IF paul died instead of john, do you think john would've written a beautiful song for paul too? i personally think he would, though soft songs aren't generally john's forte...
oh i get so sad listening to this song. i guess for a man who's lost so many people in his life, this would really be a tough song to sing, aye? still, it's beautiful.
Nothing, he has partial custody of her. Nothing at all to do with Bea. I was there that night, he now dedicates this song to Linda and George as well as John.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lets put it this way, had mdc* put 4 slugs into the back of mccartney, surely lennon would have wrote a much better tribute song towards his one time fellow song writer and then he would have had spoke out for gun control laws!
I am sorry I am a huge fan of John's, I like his solo stuff way better than Paul's. But LEAVE PAUL ALONE. Jesus, this is what annoys me about some Lennon fans, all they do is bash Paul. You can hate his music, or whatever but he tried to write a heartfelt song about John. Talking about hypothetical songs John would have written about Paul were the situation reversed is rediculous
saw paul play in cleveland back in the early 90's, he didn't play this song. saw ringo play with his allstar band about the same time. so safe to say i've seen half the beatles and that's that!
if to pick between the two concerts, pauls was a stadium concert, ringos was much smaller on scale. ringo starr was the best concert i've ever been too.
OMG, This video is great. I got a little teary. There are rumours floating around that he will be touring sometime this year and is in the middle of recording a new album with his son. I am soo there if he tours.
What a wonderful performance. The most touching thing and the most powerful element of the Beatles experience was the genuine love. A love of music, experimentation without limit, and a love for each other. That love is touchingly elegant here.
This video always makes me cry, every time I listen to it, I almost cannot explain the sensations it makes me feel. Thank you for posting, thank you so much. [Well, I'm not English so if there are some mistakes in this comment I'm really sorry ^^]
It kind of seems to me that this performance of here today wasn't really meant for John..
In the introduction of the song he says "this song was written originally for john"..So this "originally for john" makes me believe he sings it this time thinkin probably about Linda, who, anyway, was his music partner too..
Im not sure though, an anyway i hope i'm wrong, cus i'd like to take it that he was thinkin of john lennon.
RichieStarkey is right! However, even if he was thinking of Linda it would make no difference. If a song he wrote for first wrote about John can ALSO sum up the feelings for the one great love of his life, that speaks volumes!
i wonder if red was john favorite color or somthng or maybey that was johns shirt cause it looks like he has the same shirt on every time he preforms this song?
I don't think it has anything to do with red being john's favorite color. Paul wore red during back in the us tour, which most clips are taking from, but it's possible
What can you say except Paul rocks us all and John still does with his spirit. Their music with George and Ringo can make any day a great day. Best band ever and thanks Paul for a sad but wonderful tribute to your friend. You guys not only changed the world, but sure as hell made it a better place. Thank Again! PB
i wonder what memory he was thinking of. sometimes ill be running and listening to my ipod, and listen to a song like this, or u2's sometimes you cant make it on your own, and even though I've listened to these songs 100s of times once in a great while I'll think of a memory of someone that's no longer here and it'll get to me. by the way, thats hard for an irish-catholic to admit! but indeed i wonder what moment paul was thinking of...
This is such a touching version of this song... Paul is such a wonderful musician, and I love him for that. It must be truly hard to sing that song after what happened.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
boy, his voice is staring to cave in lately. i wonder how much longer he'll tour. luckily i caught him in '01. great show. great man. unbeleivable talent!
Whatever triggers his emotions here, whoever he is so obviously remembering, whether it be John, Linda, George, all 3 of them... who knows? Who cares? This clip captures something really special... a moment in time. Beautiful and touching. Class !!
Lennon had some good stuff that had backlogged during his time off from recording but I don't think it was better than what he was doing in the 60s/early 70s. McCartney has had flashes of good stuff since Here Today and I wish he had done more stuff with Elvis Costello because they seemed to be a good team. I saw McCartney in concert a couple of years ago and his energy and stamina is amazing to be doing 3 hour concerts city after city.
He's been accused of not showing emotion when John was killed and being a bit cold but this proves, after all these years, that John's death still hurts him greatly. What an incredible talent also. We're all lucky to still have him.
wiltat, while thats somewhat true, lennon is responsible for way more hits than mccartney and alot of maccartney's had lennon parts so I would say lennon is just simply the greatest musician to ever grace earth and the great ones have to leave early, its a cardinal rule.
unless you're a super hero you wont change that. too bad there will never be another lennon or close to it.
Very personal to all of us. So glad Paul lets us in once in awhile. Paul still writes songs wondering if John would like them.

He said in the beginning this song was "originally written for John",
in my opinion, this song has turned into a tribute to his baby girl he has with his X wife.
Every word could be interpreted to be talking about his child "you never understood a word but were always there with a smile",
"and if I said I really loved you and was glad you came along".
He's heartbroken over losing his baby girl and misses her.
maggieskaggs 3 years ago
What happened to his baby girl?
etowmom 2 years ago
Nothing, he has partial custody of her. Nothing at all to do with Bea. I was there that night, he now dedicates this song to Linda and George as well as John.

lets put it this way, had mdc* put 4 slugs into the back of mccartney, surely lennon would have wrote a much better tribute song towards his one time fellow song writer and then he would have had spoke out for gun control laws!
*mdc, lennon fans never mention his name!
dave18469 3 years ago
John was being a dick about letting all the prisoners out of prison , let MDC out ,he was legally insane, but not now.

why should they let him out? he killed one of the greatest musicians of all time! he should of got the death penalty!

Talking about hypothetical songs John would have written about Paul were the situation reversed is rediculous
liberalchick06 2 years ago 6
saw paul play in cleveland back in the early 90's, he didn't play this song. saw ringo play with his allstar band about the same time. so safe to say i've seen half the beatles and that's that!
if to pick between the two concerts, pauls was a stadium concert, ringos was much smaller on scale. ringo starr was the best concert i've ever been too.

What a wonderful performance. The most touching thing and the most powerful element of the Beatles experience was the genuine love. A love of music, experimentation without limit, and a love for each other. That love is touchingly elegant here.

Interesting thing...
It kind of seems to me that this performance of here today wasn't really meant for John..
In the introduction of the song he says "this song was written originally for john"..So this "originally for john" makes me believe he sings it this time thinkin probably about Linda, who, anyway, was his music partner too..
Im not sure though, an anyway i hope i'm wrong, cus i'd like to take it that he was thinkin of john lennon.
mpacreserg 3 years ago
mpacreserg: no, because he then says, "...I'll try it to him" .. in other words...this goes out to him.
RichieStarkey 3 years ago
RichieStarkey is right! However, even if he was thinking of Linda it would make no difference. If a song he wrote for first wrote about John can ALSO sum up the feelings for the one great love of his life, that speaks volumes!

i wonder if red was john favorite color or somthng or maybey that was johns shirt cause it looks like he has the same shirt on every time he preforms this song?
lennon2mccartney 3 years ago
I don't think it has anything to do with red being john's favorite color. Paul wore red during back in the us tour, which most clips are taking from, but it's possible
wrestlewithjime 3 years ago
johns favorite color is green not red.

What can you say except Paul rocks us all and John still does with his spirit. Their music with George and Ringo can make any day a great day. Best band ever and thanks Paul for a sad but wonderful tribute to your friend. You guys not only changed the world, but sure as hell made it a better place. Thank Again! PB
PaulBrownandtheKD 3 years ago
i wonder what memory he was thinking of. sometimes ill be running and listening to my ipod, and listen to a song like this, or u2's sometimes you cant make it on your own, and even though I've listened to these songs 100s of times once in a great while I'll think of a memory of someone that's no longer here and it'll get to me. by the way, thats hard for an irish-catholic to admit! but indeed i wonder what moment paul was thinking of...

This is such a touching version of this song... Paul is such a wonderful musician, and I love him for that. It must be truly hard to sing that song after what happened.

It sounds great live...
I admire the fact that Paul covered this tune
despite all the loses. Not only "John"
1.) Linda, 2.) Brian, 3.) John, 4.) George
5.) stuart sudcliff - Hope I got this one right...
6.) and the last loss... Heather... But he has a child here whoch is a plus in some way.
This man is blessed despite the troubles and he gave so much and he continues to give.
Thanks Sir Paul, I/We love you always

Lennon had some good stuff that had backlogged during his time off from recording but I don't think it was better than what he was doing in the 60s/early 70s. McCartney has had flashes of good stuff since Here Today and I wish he had done more stuff with Elvis Costello because they seemed to be a good team. I saw McCartney in concert a couple of years ago and his energy and stamina is amazing to be doing 3 hour concerts city after city.
randy1979 3 years ago
He's been accused of not showing emotion when John was killed and being a bit cold but this proves, after all these years, that John's death still hurts him greatly. What an incredible talent also. We're all lucky to still have him.
randy1979 3 years ago 11

hes a shadow of his former self, he hasn't put out anything decently creative since here today.
lennon was in his prime at his death and was "getting better" all the time.

what a moron. Obviously you haven't listened to any of Pauls music since the 80's. Kinda stuck in the 70's with John, huh?

He said at the beggining this is a John song?? Lennon/McCartney is the best ever, the best of the best, unbateables
WiltatKansas 4 years ago 5
He says it was written *for* John. He issued the song in 1981, not too long after Lennon's awful death.
xanjohn 4 years ago 4
Actually, it was on the 1982 album, "Tug Of War".
Beatleologist 3 years ago 2
wiltat, while thats somewhat true, lennon is responsible for way more hits than mccartney and alot of maccartney's had lennon parts so I would say lennon is just simply the greatest musician to ever grace earth and the great ones have to leave early, its a cardinal rule.
unless you're a super hero you wont change that. too bad there will never be another lennon or close to it.
blee3ee 3 years ago
I cannot more agree.
