The canadian govt's "management" plan still allows for the seal numbers to drop very very far below the lowest level they have ever reached, which was 1.8 million in the 1970s. The seal population is now endangered. The brutal slaughter of seals is a personally lucrative off-season activity conducted by a few 1000 east coasters. Their income is mainly from commercial fisheries such as crab shrimp and lobster throughout the year. Only a tiny fraction of their economy is from massacring seals.

The Cod and other fish populations were wiped out by the gross incompetence and the corruption and greed of the Canadian DFO. IT IS VERY OBVIOUS that it is not the seals that have killed off the fish. The main diet of seals is squid and herring, and cod were abundant when seal population was at its highest level which they conveniently forget to mention in their propaganda.

Typical Canadian government propaganda. There were originally 40 million seals on the east coast, and now seals are reduced to less than 10% of their original numbers. Now there are under three million seals and their population is falling because of the greedy seal massacre and ice loss due to global warming. There is also evidence to this day of massive cruelty and large percentages of seals that linger and suffer for hours.

I have never seen a string of comments with so much bad information in it before. As long as people keep feeding each other the wrong facts, as long as the DOF is allowed to twist their numbers and claim that, because they can't count the number of seals, there must be lots of them....the issue will never be brought out into the light and shown to be what it is....a long held cultural tradition held by people in the East, who use it now as a source of money because they (DOF) killed the fishery.

the worst thing about it is, more and more people are realizing that the seal hunt actually IS humane, and when the truth finally reaches enough people, then PETA, HSUS, and IFAW will lose a lot of validity, and they do have some campaigns which are actually worthwhile, as opposed to being sick money games, such as their attack on the seal hunt.

baby seals or 'whitecoats' haven't been legal in the hunt since the 80s, 90% of seals today are hunted with guns, and the hakapik has been PROVEN, when used properly, to be a perfectly humane tool for the hunt.

Seal hunting is nothing new

The Inuit have been killing seals for perhaps 1000 of years. Was it always human? No. However it is more humane now since they use rifles.

Polar bears have been killing seals for 100 000 of years. Was it humane? No. And its still not humane! Polar bears rip the seals apart while they're still alive! This is life. If you don't like the seal hunt go argue with a Polar bear, if they listen to you then the rest of us might listen.

Due to poor ice conditions my ass ... 95% of the straits of Belle Isle Were covered. 3% of the seal populations is killed every year. the populations growth 13 % per year.

I support IFAW and everytime I watch one of these videos i wonder, why do we do these things to our fellow creatures on green earth. And the hunters, not only of seals but all animals should stop. Ino i'm just one person, but IFAW is many more, and I will continue to support them and I hope one day we can live knowing seals are protected and safe from creulty and abbuse.

I'm against animal cruelty, but the animal protecting groups care much more about the size of their purse than anything else. The HSUS' president's salary was $510.000 in 2004. The sealers average income is roughly $7.000, barely enough to feed a family.

Not to mention letting all the seals live would mean the total wipe of fish population in the area, which would mean the lack of food for seals, and their certain death, in a slow agony of starvation...

i wouldn't mind the seal hunt if they killed less seals, made sure they were dead, and maybe only killed the ones that appeared unhealthy, and sure that they wouldn't swim away and die.

I just watched some footage of a "hunt" and it turned my stomach. I can't believe this is allowed at all. It's extremely cruel and inconceivable that in this day and age anyone needs to earn a living like this. Thank you IFAW for all that you do to stop this needless slaughter! Shame on the Canadian government and the thugs who continue to massacre these poor creatures!
