This isn't just speculation or conspiracy theory either, this is actually documented multiple times in the late 1700's and early 1800's. It was prosecuted by first the Bavarian government, and then most all governments of Europe because of pressures from the catholic church. This is where the trail becomes lost, and historically is said to have died out, but it's very possible it only went deeper into the degrees of masonry.
