It's funny how some think this is a bit slow. Listen to Horowitz, and all of a sudden it is a refreshing change of pace when he slows down the tempo and allows the notes to speak. The tempo is where it is due to hand size! Her fingerings= good, and those concerned about bad habits underestimate the competency of this performer's kinesthetic coordination. She will adapt as she ages, and the tempo will guard against tendinitis. I have heard this etude 1000 times in juries, and this is GREAT!
this etude is somewhat have melodious rhythmic, it's very different from gigue !! i feel dizzy listening to gigue but this i don't !! This playing is almost perfect !!
This must be extremely physically demanding for someone this small. Just look at the span of the piece and how she is forced to continuously move her body to reach all the notes. Remarkable.
Even someone totally tone deaf could tell this little darling is awesome. She's genius in the true sense of the term, pure magic, and delightful to listen to. I love everything she puts on video, and hope she becomes one of the world's most famous musicians. I wish her blessing, happiness and success in music and life. I only wish I knew her full name and where she's from. Want to continue following her career and buy any CDs she records. Would love to see her in concert too. Rachel's awesome!
I started playing when I was eight also, I've been playing for six years now. I'm currently practicing Chopin's Étude Op. 10 No. 5, Op. 10 No. 8 and Op. 10 No. 12. But I have to say this young girl is incredible, if she chooses this as her career, then she will have a very promising one.
Please people, don't fool the child! She is doing her best, but well, how shall I put it? There are some "problems", and I am not sure she can solve them. Don't give false hope to people! That's cruel!
jsnauwaert: Although she is playing this piece at a slow student pace, she is playing it accurately and evenly. Please listen to her now that she is older. Her performances are nothing short of astounding technically and artistically. Someone likened her performance of the difficult Chopin "Ballade in G minor" to that of Horowitz. Listen to Rachel's "Tempest" and "Rage over a Lost Penny" both by Beethoven. You will readily agree that she has a very bright future.
If you chose this tempo, you should listen to he melody waay more. I would prefer a bit (not much) faster. But still, if you pick a "slow" tempo, you should play it more melodic.
Ok So I've only seen a couple of her video's and I keep seeing people post comments like "she's too young to play this" or crap about her "emotional capacity." She can play whatever she chooses! She's incredible. People play to PLAY. Because they love it. And why are there so many people saying crap who dont have ANY videos posted of themselves playing!! lol. I swear, youtube critics are hilarious. Talk lots of crap about something they'll NEVER be able to do. This girl is amazing...
@cisco1225 So true. Her tempo is amazing considering she is playing an instrument that is too large for her. Also, you can hear the articulation of each note, which is refreshing considering this etude should sound like beams of light.
@cisco1225 You are right.she is cute, she play very well, and piano is difficult.(my teacher alway said:the most difficult in piano is the first 20 years)Piano is passion and only non pianist can tell whitch interpretation is better than other.maybe there is only jalousy because they are unable to play the same thing that she can.......
Yes,"its beyond her emotional capacity, she's too young for it"......
She has the ambition, the technical ability, but lacks the emotion, the understanding, the deep feeling (what is also called musicality) But when she grows up,she wont lack any. Hard work, and keep it up little girl!!
what do u mean by "spoil ur ears" and to what yardstick are u judging this musician?
well i think this is a rather gd training for ur ears and mind.. how could u make suggestons to help her improve.. rather than making such useless remarks
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
obviously you have no talent in music,i meant that by listening to drivel eventually it becomes commonplace, rather akin to brutalities in war,she should ALWAYS listen to good perfect music
Rachel,to be honest with you, this is an artistically attractive performance. For you age, technically you are great for I have heard you play other difficult pieces. Taking your youth into consideration and the short time in which you have learnt these works, you should have a promising career, if everything goes the way it should. I have played this piece and know its technical hurdles. May God crown your wonderful efforts with success and His ultimate purpose as you attain adulthood.
An amazing effort! wow, such a difficult piece and in spite of hand limitations and the major technical difficulties of the piece she still manages to make music. Sure it's not perfect but these Etudes have created fear in the hearts of many pianists.
Her interpretations are very good, with impressive technique, and she obviously loves playing or else sh wouldn't be doing it....but i believe the ballade and this etude are two pieces beyond her emotional capacity, she's too young for it...... Best Wishes kiddo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate to criticize Rachel, as I absolutely love and admire her playing, but I think this piece is technically beyond her (possibly due to her small hands). It seems like she has to focus so much on just getting the notes that she has nothing left over to give the piece the spirit and flair she bring to most other things she plays. I'm sure she'll play this piece very well in some time!
can't you tell she enjoys and love the piano? there should be a law saying that people like you should shut and and stop being so stereotypical about asian (especially chinese people force their kids a lot). i'm chinese and i love the piano, thats why i play, not because my parents want me to. by the way, not only me, but lots of people in china now spoil their kids (boys and girls), so please, before you say anything, make sure its a fact. you don't even know rachel and her family like that
For someone with small hands like her, I find it extremely impressive that she can complete arpeggios spanning 2 and half octaves. Most prodigies play things like Bach's fugues where this is minimal hand range, her performance is flawless!
Excuse me, but her performance is NOT flawless. A little slow. But it is very good, considering her hand size. My worry is that, by playing things which are a bit too difficult for her now, she may develope bad habits and have to relearn things with different fingerings when she is older . But that was 2 years ago!
Rachel, I thank-you for generating such an enthusiastic response to your playing. Thus, you have already made a contribution to the field of classical music!
just amazing!

Excuse me, but her performance is NOT flawless. A little slow. But it is very good, considering her hand size.
