Need an answer.....I have a cassette tape....yes cassette......of must be pre Second Heat release of Racer X and first 4+- minutes is paul going nuts on the guitar....and the there are 2 songs.....Instead of the chorus of "Hammer Away"....it has the chorus of "Last Person Alive"......same song....different chorus......the second song is a slow one that i have never heard on any RX recordings.....question is what year and what EP possibly could these songs be from???
Every guitarist needs to go out and buy Paul's "Intense Rock Complete" I was already fast and clean with the shred thing, but that DVD took me to the next level. PAUL GILBERT!!!!!!!!!!!!1
@diazluisdiaz Yes, paul is more of a direct teacher. I seem to pick things up from people like vinnie better. Probably comes from my old guitar teacher. He was always really basic about things. He never handed things to me on a plate. He'd introduce concepts, and then have me figure it out on my own. That has helped me very much as a musician.
the tech fucking up? paul should have figured this shit out during sound check! I know he doesn't like delay so it's not Paul's idea but shit come on Paul, do a quick "lick check" before the show!!!
Love the story at the beginning! "Mike Varney was like, 'I want more licks I want more licks, Gimme more licks!!!'" You all know who Mike Varney is I'm sure :P
I've noticed recently, or maybe it has been for years now - I don't know, Paul uses headphones on-stage for monitoring. Is there a specific reason for this? He just likes the sound better? Or has he had some hearing problems?
@chasingpaganini He got tinitus poor fellow... and he can hear himself much better live with out depending on other monitors if something goes wrong with his own monitors :)
its paul gilbert! he plays everything note for note everytime. (once exception "last rock and roll star" idk how the hell he even played that in the studio, live its the same except for the ending arpeggios)
one of the things I dig about PG is not only is he an amazing musician, but he is so friendly down to earth and casual.... no rockstar attitude at all.
@Fruscification yeah your right that they sound relativily the same because they are all early neoclassical guitar players, except maybe satriani, who later branched off into different types of music after the downfall of the 80s (except yngwie)
Leave it up to a sound man to absolutely destroy this solo. 1 out of every 10 sound men know there ass from there elbow, WHY!!!? How could they think that much FN delay sounds good. So frustrating...
This is true. However, it wasn't "tech" mistake, it was the sound guy, hired by the venue who did added delay. Definitely NOT Paul's idea. You don't had DELAY to guitar or vocals through the PA...you do it at the AMP..if you want it. He was dumb.
@RacerXband The sound guy WOULD be a tech mistake. : ) BTW, it's perfectly acceptable to add delay through the PA. Many people do it and it often sounds better. : ).
@RacerXband Oh, I get your meaning now about "tech" mistake. I would still have to disagree, though. If the sound guy put that much delay on his guitar, or it was bleed through the vox mics, (whatever happened)...it's a definite mistake on the part of the soundman. : )
@RacerXband that is not the fact, paul is NEVER playing fast solo with delay, its like cheating, a lot of guitar player use a lot of delay in their fasst solo section to make it sound better
@JerryHellyeah We all know it is delay. : ) I'm just searching for a reason why it would be on his guitar that heavily...as Paul would not do that himself. It's even on the vox pretty heavily. If it was, indeed the soundman....what the hell was he thinking? Paul takes care of all his own fx anyway.
No, it's not. Paul's actually not one to use a lot of delay. I think what happened is that his on stage volume is loud enough that's it's bleeding back into the vocal mics...which DO have delay on them for the singer. Paul wouldn't run that much delay just on his guitar. The sound man should have turned the delay off of the vocals during talking parts and guitar solos like this. Shouldn't have been using that much to begin with...even on the vocals.
@foxtrotalex How do you know? Were there? did you guys talk to Paul personally. The vox have a huge delay on them too. It sounds like it may be vocal mic bleed.
i know because you can hear the difference, cause its a stereo delay, and because the poster of this video commented that the stupid sound guy added delay.
the difference between bleed into other mics and a stereo delay effect. And the poster knows because they wouldn't be posting explanations for the delay unless they were pissed about it too
@foxtrotalex There are plenty of posters that claim to know things that they really couldn't possibly know. You make it sound like he's not speculating at all. As if he has an inside track. Hell, maybe HE was the soundman. ; ) Besides, if there was a stereo delay on the vox...the guitar would be getting the exact same delay as it was bleeding through the vox mics. ; )
@foxtrotalex Having said that...I'm not getting a true right/left with my terrible little computer speakers here. The delay on the vox and on the guitar, sounds the same over MY system, so I wouldn't know the difference. Guitar and vox has the same delay time and feedback.
@foxtrotalex Further, this seems like a simple vid camera recording and not a right/left mic on either side of the room in front of the right/left PA stacks...which you would need to really tell that the guitar was a receiving a stereo delay and the vocals were not. Curious...you must be getting a right/left bounce in your computer speakers that I'm not getting. Could be a compounding effect too. Maybe we're getting a little delay on Paul's channel AND vox bleed. lol
i think your system has alot to do with it, cause im using studio monitors, and i'm about 95% sure that its a stereo delay just on pauls guitars. Yes there is some on the vox but i dont think it's bleed. The recording of this show isn't from a mic on a camera, it is a feed from the board. You can tell because there are cam videos from this show, and there is no delay on pauls guitar. Hense, the delay is being added post micing.
@foxtrotalex ah, ok. I thought maybe it was a good condenser mic capture in the room. I have heard some of the other vids from this show...I think it's from this show, anyway. I can't remember if there is any delay on the guitar in the other captures, but I'll take your word for it. It just seems so odd that the soundman would even consider adding delay to Paul's channel. I was searching for a reason.
@foxtrotalex He's got it SO heavy on there...I thought maybe it was something out of the soundman's control. I was thinking maybe he put a gate on the mics in some of the other, later recordings from this show to take care of the problem. A hot mic gain, especially if the vox mics were compressed with no gate, would cause a lot of bleed, BUT my theory was foiled anyway when Paul speaks into his mic and says, "where's one?". Paul's mic has no delay. That would be the one that was bleeding.
@foxtrotalex Oh wait...duh..lol There's has to be some mics in this room for the capture....otherwise, you wouldn't hear the crowd noise and room ambiance. Definitely not just a board recording.
yeah i realized its not just a board recording after i had posted. Ive just seen so many videos from this concert and they are all different. I was also puzzled over the idea of the sound man adding delay to paul's guitar. Seems the sound guy at namm isn't that great
yep, on a boom box on top of the wall side of my waterbed listening kind of low volume...then I stood up, grabbed my box and just stood there looking at it, playing it over and over wondering if I should tell the rest of the world or keep it to myself.
@deliriumtriggered Actually he can't. He says it himself in one of his lesson videos. He says "You know, everyone comes to me and says they love my sweep picking but I can't do them." and he explains what it is he does.
@funnyguy1321 He can sweep both ways, he's just very modest about it. At the beginning of this video he does a great sweep up and down: watch?v=UBEVpR1UsvI
You don't think of each note individually, you remember them in groups of notes, just like you do words. Eventually individual words form sentences, and sentences aren't that hard to remember.
Even further, there are 12 in an octave and an octave is very much like the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Once you understand the letters, you can begin to easily form words, sentences, paragraphs, etc.
It's not so hard to understand once you get the language.
At 1:21-1: he indeed did do a sweep. It is definitely true that Paul has opined that the use of alternate-picking is superior to sweep-picking for playing arpeggios. However, in the Racer X era, he and Bruce did sweep-pick more than occasionally. This solo is meant to be a rendition of a solo he did from that era, so that it features a sweep should not be too surprising.
He might have just skipped strings - I heard him in another video once say he tends to do that instead of sweep. And hey, with a reach like that, why wouldn't you?
He sweeps more often then you might think. But he does always say how he prefers string skipping, it's just sometimes the sweeps are easier or sound better.

It's a Randy Rhoads series head, I hope he bought it in the UK, because we here in America only get 500 of those. It'd be kind of selfish for him to have bought two of them.
It's actually the new Marshall Vintage Moderns in white. They look like the RRs but they're not. Paul started using them shortly after G3 in order to get more low end than Laney heads and combos offered. He even endorses the Vintage Modern on the Marshall website and it's mentioned in a few youtube vids. It's a sick head.
its strange having paul play such face melting neoclassical in a recent video. cause since racer x disbanded he's been playing with a lot more of a feel for blues and rock.
I think these are the new Marshall vintage modern amps. I don't think they sound as clean or fat as his old Laney amps. He's having to process the sound much more. He never used that kind of delay on the old Laneys. I tried the vintage moderns in the store and thought they sounded muddy. I'll stick with my Soldano.

My point is Paul plays any style,
his solo b4 GOOMY : mostly pop, rock, mellow and classical (heck even a bluesy and jazzy tone)
MR.Big : rock and metal
Racer X : Neo classical
Goomy : well, from neoclassic to techno sounding
SFBDR : you name it,he give it hehe. .

how the FUCK do they remember all these notes i'm fucking tripping wow
marcelb666 2 years ago 2

RaidenNoKishi 2 years ago
watch his hand and listen to it, its definately a sweep ;)
M1ll34 2 years ago
He sweeps more often then you might think. But he does always say how he prefers string skipping, it's just sometimes the sweeps are easier or sound better.

too much delay....but impressive, as always
Spacca189 2 years ago 2
Not Paul's fault. The soundman obviously had echo on the vocals and guitar mics and just left the room.

Those are RR 1959's the Randy Rhoads heads.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
It's a Randy Rhoads series head, I hope he bought it in the UK, because we here in America only get 500 of those.

It's a sick head.
leoplaysguitar 2 years ago
That's a horrible shame.. I don't like laney that much, but I don't really like the vintage modern either.

dont said where's the feeling with this guy. The feeling is THERE!

its strange having paul play such face melting neoclassical in a recent video. cause since racer x disbanded he's been playing with a lot more of a feel for blues and rock.

He's all cool on the outside, but inside he's going "I still got it bitches!"

I think these are the new Marshall vintage modern amps. I don't think they sound as clean or fat as his old Laney amps. He's having to process the sound much more. He never used that kind of delay on the old Laneys. I tried the vintage moderns in the store and thought they sounded muddy. I'll stick with my Soldano.
aleisterfiend 2 years ago
The delay was the sound mans fault. Apparently Paul was not happy about it, either.
