I give credit for the effort and advocacy! However, and not being an expert, but only a survivor of extreme physical and emotional abuse, This tape does not acurately help our cause to end crimes against children, child abuse & neglect in America...or anywhere. IT focuses on children' "being beaten" which I think is too specific if you want to drive home the conditioning of the brain between 1-3 years or the definition of abuse which emcompasses 4 elements and none of them are "being beaten".
This is the absolute truth! Those of you who are interested in Alice Miller's work, follow me on continuing to inspire youths to break free from this tragedy!

The extent to which a child's natural expectations are not met is the extent to which they will achieve true natural health and well being, at the psyche level. The extent to which a society interferes with these natural expectations is as far from nature as that society has moved. The extent to which such treatment of children is rationalised is the extent to which the rationaliser has internalised the values of the system of indoctrination or 'socialisation' or abuse.
The innate expectations of every child are to meet adults who have empathy, who recognise the child as a person with meaning in his or her own right, to meet adults who are competent in life skills suited for living on Earth (not necessarily 'civilisation'), to sense their own feelings and to be able to trust those feelings, sense-ings. They are also expecting to be meet adults who are congruent, coherent and happy being who they are.
Thank you for making this video. Very inspiring. Miller's work has unlocked a door inside me and let out a flood of feelings I'd hidden since childhood to help me heal.
I admire Alice Miller's work a lot. She's doing a great job. If only more ppl listened. I get so angry when I see a mother who spanks her child or shouts at them in the street for being naughty. And usually naughty maens they wanted to play, run just like children. So they learn that spontanity is bad. They have so much energy, I know it can get hard at times, I'm a teacher .But one can learn patiance and understanding

The opposite, getting away with all kinds of "bad" behaviour in school because the teachers are not allowed to grab a student in the arm is also wrong and can have the same outcome for self image as repeated abuse. This because being blind of bad behavior leads to this conclusion for the person "this is who I am (bad), since noone reacts to what I do".
Sure, this is exactly like letting our wives get away with all kinds of "bad" behaviour at home - because the husbands are not allowed to give their wives a spank or two anymore, our wives come to the conclusion that they are bad and thus become disobedient and unruly.
Hey DrNPsy Sunshine, why the fuck any grown up human being should be obedient to someone else?? Why should I ever let anyone spank me?? Have you ever heard of things like independence or respect?
that's sound very ugly whan someone talks about grown-ups like that, aint it? - we are so use to hear this kind of outrages remarks about childrn. we dont even see that it is so wrong, untill someone comes and translates it to the grown ups world....
I referred to grown-ups cos' DrNPsy is talking about women here. And cos' I think that many women who were mistreated as chidren grow up into submissive and as a result passive agressive or self-destructive wives, girlfriends who even don't know that they deserve respect cos' they didn't experience it from their parents. I have a neighbour who was beaten by her father and now she has a husband who does the same and she can't break the vicious circle. She's been with this guy for TWENTY YEARS!!
I respect the passion with which you responded, but I believe DrNPsy was speaking sarcastically. The atrocities inflicted on children become that much more obvious when similar behavior is inflicted on an adult. Would any loving, rational adult even consider physically abusing another person if they didn't "obey" them?

Looking at all tyrants in the world this is the pattern (Hitler,Stalin, Saddam Hussein etc) I think your video does not fully show her message and belief, since people might believe that she thinks selfhate grow very easy just from a spank or two.

Just hitting a child, as in physical spanking, sometimes, is not what leads to a criminal mind or a brutal adult later on. What Miller actually writes about in her books and about the roots of violence is that repeated mistreatments, systematic abuse, systematic beatings, mobbing and neglect of a child leads to selfhate and outrageous behaviour.
Thank you! Thank you a thousand times for spreading the most important truth.
I neglected the impact of my mother beating me as a young child for all through my life until I eventually could understand and feel (!) what an utterly destructive effect it had on my life and most important: my relationships to other people and especially women.
Thanks to Bioenergetics/Body Therapy I'm regaining my ability to love again, to open my heart again, a heart that was destroyed long ago by a violent mother
Alice Miller's right about the effects of violence, met Alice at a Adult Children of Alcoholics meeting in London, twenty years ago....what a wonderful human being.
Please pass on this info to EVERYONE you know on your lists ... the more people who GET this, the sooner we will start to resolve our global issues, from war to -isms to the environment!
Such essential information, thank you for posting. I am very grateful to Alice Miller's work defining child abuse. As a survivor of childhood spankings and other beatings I can attest to the truth of her life's work. In addition I am also grateful to Miller for pointing out how circumcision of children is sexual abuse.
"...spanking children is the most brutal crime because it kills in the children the capacity to think, to feel and to have empathy with themselves and others."

Oh my God this video goes slow!!! I want to read this but this media format and execution is a poor choice for the material.
A link to the text of this video would go a long way to making this video's material better.

Not everyone can face the truth.
Not all memories can be recovered.
I read Alice Miller avidly - she is so evolved in her realisations on humanity.
She gives me the courage to persevere through the agony of my various madnesses caused by my childhood abusers.
and the shame that I passed on this demon to one of my children before I woke up...
Child abuse is as much a crime against humanity as any holocaust.
