depends, it only backs up what youve done thus far, so if you did nothing on the computer for a month, yes it would keep backing up, but theres nothing new to back up so really its doing nothing.
Hope you are well. Nice to hear your voice, even though your face is missing from here!
Do you personally recommend Time Machine?
I teach college now, and use animations, Power Points and Photoshop primarily for classes. Drive backups have to be mobile for transport. Is this program appropriate for my applications?
It would be a pleasure to hear from you personally but any info is welcome. Hello to Beth.
Hi Lisa, Nice to hear from you. Hope all is well. I like Time Machine and think it's very useful for recovering files that get misplaced. It may not really be appropriate for backing up project files and media as it's scope is much broader. It's designed to back up whole systems. Just for backing up those kind of files I'd think it would be simplest just to do it manually to a portable FireWire drive.
Help me understand why backing up the hard drive every hour until you fill up your external hard drive is a good thing. What happens when you run out of space? Will you need to buy another hard drive? Is there a way to free up space once the ext hard drive is full?
The entire hard drive is backed up and then after that, hard links are created every hour on the hour. Then once you switch into Time Machine, you can go back in time by viewing snapshots of what any given folder looked like back in time.
i had a filef on my desktop that was sent to me (my desktop is the place my mac places it once received) i then deleted it pretty much as soon as i received it, and cleared my trash bin, and then realised i wanted it back, i went into time machine and it wasnt there, why is this?
it's probably because time machine only backs up once every hour. if you download something and delete it right away, time machine likely won't have record of it because of this.
Hello thks for the tips, its too good.
I'v a question, Does CleanMyMac affects Time machine???

do you need an external drive for backups?

Does it back up the actual OS as well?
And if the drive isn't formatted for OS X will it automatically format it?

I think it would be helpful to point out you can go into Time Machine preferences and tell it what not to back up. Podcasts for instance.
