@Mad4john Not sing this with an American accent??? If we were to be purists, then there shouldn't have been a British version at all and this should have remained a French production through and through!
@mermanluponegoodreno "... ben pretendeeeeeeng." One of the reasons why Lea Michele is much more worth watching: true talent, pretty face, beautiful body, and NO speech defect!
It's funny how people are talking about Wicked. I think she'll do well either as Elphaba or Glinda, based on Idina's and Kristin's ugly, screechy voices. Sutton's voice is very squeaky - she's a natural at delivering WITCHY sounds!
@jgardell Excuse me! Lea Michele has sung "Defying Gravity" (with no less than its main star Idina Menzel) and she did a GREAT job without sounding witchy! But I guess you're right somehow: Sutton will be a "natural" at this witch role because she looks and sounds like a witch.
@mermanluponegoodreno Yeah, what's up with that? "I've only ben pretendeeeeng!" Lol! Obviously she needs speech lessons in addition to voice and acting lessons.
It's hard to really judge Sutton's Eponine just from this song... if you ever get a chance to see the whole video of this Les Mis performance you can see the unique take she brought to the role and how she good she was at it. I kept on saying "wow, if she keeps this up, she's going to beat out Lea Salonga for my favorite Eponine" and she certainly did.
@mdiamse EVERYONE is better than Sutton Foster for this role. Lea Michele, with the softer and more expressive voice, is at least a million times than this gal with the squeaky voice.
@LeaMicheleBombshell I don't like your b*tchy idol at all, but I must give her credit for having a more beautiful voice than this "gal with the squeaky voice."
@joshgardell In the book, Eponine leads Marius to the barricades in hopes that he would die. She only saves his life because she wanted to die before him. She tells Marius that she hopes that EVERYONE will die, and only then gives Marius Cossette's letter, which she had witheld from him, in hopes that he won't be angry with her in the afterlife. In the book, at least, Eponine was, in fact, a lunatic.
Whether or not this interpretation is appropiate for the musical is another story.
I saw Sutton Foster playing Eponine in a touring company of Les Miserables long before she was SUTTON FOSTER and she had me in tears when she sang this. She is the only person out of the entire cast that I remember at all. You just can't appreciate how good she was from a poor quality video - or, probably, any video at all.
I think sutton is amazing BUT this song should not be done with an american accent it just sounds sillly. For god's sakes, Les mis is almost an opera, it's not wicked so you don't need to use an overbearing infliction!
@jgardell It's funny you mentioned that: I got the same impression, too, that she was portraying Eponine as a lunatic. I think that she has strong vocals, but this is not one of her best. People should see her "Thoroughly Modern Millie" performance!

@benjaminjosephharris finally SOMEONE agrees. not every female who can belt is an elphaba... in fact, I could NEVER see Sutton Foster, as amazing as she is, play elphaba..
@punknnerd2 Well, at this point in the show eponine, kind of IS crazy. After all she's seen and what's happened to her, sutton puts the right amount of emotion and crazy and normalcy that is necessary to convey why she's singing this song at this point in the show.
I'm a fan, but the abrupt cut in each line (she doesn't sustain notes) particularly during the first half of the song is very distracting (and her acting here does make her look psycho). I still love her and am amazed by her powerful voice. I'm sure she's learned so much for her experience now and she'll do a lot better given the chance to re-do the role (though she'd be too old now).
@sanjayame: You (and their many fans here) will be pleased to know that Sutton Foster and Lea Salonga just adore each other. Can't go wrong with these talented ladies...
She was fantastic in Millie and certainly did better in that role than in this one (understandably since she's no Lea Salonga), but I wouldn't rag on her for this performance.
@Thespianage Now I remember the name! Marissa and Celia were certainly much better! (Stronger voices with the more appropriate interpretation, not a psychotic version.)

If I was sitting in the far back row, I wouldn't be able to see her face, so her whole body could've been doing just a tad more.
