I think that many of you guys that commented on what Brian calls "electronic tools", misspelling " electric POWER tools", didn't get his point at ALL: Brian is concerned about the damage caused by the vibrations and chopped cuts of the rotating cutters, nothing more. Electromagnetic waves don't affect wood at all (at the naturally ocurring levels).
On a different matter, I've got a question for you Brian: what proportions of cooked balsam and walnut oil do you use for your varnish? I'm most in
trees are awesome! first they give you oxygen then they give you houses. now... they give us....MUSIC!!!!!!!!! It's hard to imagine my violin being a tree once... it makes me wonder where he use to live and stuff......... TREES AREE AWESOMEE
only hand tools...not electronic tools...hm...well it helps to prevent cell damage but thats soo subtle...atfer you make the violin, there it goes round the world...and its being exposed by millions of other "elctronic tools"...the fact that even out in the sun on ground level have a certain "radiation"...like 1 flight in the airplane about 4-8 hours i think equals to one chest X-Ray. Unless your talking in terms of just playing your violin at your homeplace, than your violin may sound its best.
I also watched the video's on your website and have to say they are the best i have found about violinmaking. I love the way you have your own style/ opinion about the building. I think i have chosen the wrong profession...

These videos here have inspired me to craft my next violin. I also wish to craft a cello as a gift for a friend. Thank you for posting these videos. Can you please tell me where you get your European woods? And do you know a place where i can order all the equipment necessary to make these instruments the traditional way? After that I only need to find a good teacher...which is harder than i thought.
Totally agree about hand tools it adds so much, as well as the extra energy it gives. I'm so sick of looking at luthiers pages and seeing almost everything done with routers and jigs, very boring!
i don't know why everyone was trying to prove the guy wrong about electric tools. Its probably a belief on a personal level, like people say food taste better when cooked with love. But who knows? There are still violins around from Amati in the 1500s
I am musician and with a lifetime of experience with my cello I feel that you are right. This is perhaps less a matter of science, more of wisdom - music might be a better language for men to understand natural interrelations.
the fact is that...even if hand tools were used, theree are radio waves every part in the world...the question is how long will the violin lasts its life time...and the difference between an electronic or hand tool dose not varry greatly afterall...
taking 1 month to make...thats about only 30 days difference...and than the violin is out in civilisation
Come on man...its ok to use electronic tools. everything and anything has pros and cons...NTH is perfect...and reality is temporal...will not last forever...
sry for harsh critic...but thats the truth i guess... =/
wood was living while growing it is an amazing material to work with and is the most versatile natural material available to man. We can turn wood into furniture to sit on or plates to eat from check it out it is the best material for food preperation. make spears and bows and arrows from it to hunt food. Build houses to live in. ships to sail to other continents and fish from. Fortification against enemys. just polish a piece of wood to see its real beauty. Awsome even make clocks from it
greaat...I suggest you have to teach that knowledge to your descendants to continue that values of making violine...awesome...thank you very much.. now I learn how to make violin on my own..GOD BLESS!!!
Wonderful...you can truly sense that Brian has a deep love and respect for both the raw wood and the finished instruments. His video and his craft are meditation in action.
beautiful clarity of sound of these still very young instruments; warm, full low tones and clear, fresh high frequencies - clearly made by someone who knows his craft and inherently understands the behaviour of wood.
What an inspiring video. I love the sound of the instruments that sound so much like an old Italian instrument which is amazing for a modern maker. Great video!

I'm most interested in your authentic varnish as my sister has a very old violin which needs some loving care.
Thanks for your wonderful videos and for the good karma :)

this violin maker i would has is a Hiprocrit and a paranoid?
at 1:40...electronic tools will destroy cell structure...the place where you are now has electronic waves and everywhere in this world has it...
In fact, the place where the violin will be played by whomever also has electronics all around...

The new warnished violin catches the ray of the sun wich take away the signs of the brush used.
Stradivari said it took so long for his warnish to get hard, and there are visible parts of the nature traced in the varnish still today,,,,,,

Awesome! Very nice video, and the soundtrack is from the instruments made, which is a cool idea.
Thanks for sharing.

As I see it, it is a piece of life, then it is death, then it comes back to life when its an instrument.
