Saartje05 - I do like shavings below the straw to help soak up all the fluids that are all part of foaling, as straw isn't very absorbant. But when it comes to an open mare, gelding or stud... I stick with shavings as they are easier to clean. But another reason straw is a better foaling bedding is because it keeps out draft's (sp?) and is actually a warmer bedding for the babe.
See how the foal is covered in shavings when it tries to get up? Shavings stick to a newborn foal, and often shavings are dirty enough that they can cause septicima in newborns. Shavings are a good absorbant base, however straw should be layed on top. It is a much better bedding for foaling.
agreed, i dont use them when foaling or under a year old. if they inhale some of the shavings it could damage their respritory system or even suffocate them
Wtf? For some reason I thought it was the black horse giving birth, and I thought it was shitting the baby everywhere at 0:23 but I guess there's really no birthing going on here... it's already been born. :P
Mares like privacy, if your going to breed another mare, then set up camras and leave her alone, she'll give birth and you have it on film, the real thing is better, but at least you won't miss it.
looks like there is shavings down. its better to put hay down all over the stall before they give birth, its more sanitary for the mare and foal. just a tip for ppl who have mares expecting.
i never said that straw was used for feeding horses. i was compairing them as bedding when i said they were basically the same thing, and im not talking about alphalfa hay, im talking about coastal. the only difference is coastal is much softer than straw in most cases. but as i said, most people probably dont carry straw. i used to work as a manager at an arabian breeding facility, and she used coastal hay, works as a perfectly well substitute for when straw isnt available.
ong both of ur horses are so cute. was it scary watching the horse giving birth. My horse is pregnant and going to give birth in about ten months. Ur horses are so cool.
yep i know what you mean. We have the foaling alarms on our mares and one of them is known for making you get up a dozen times a night. This year she kept setting the alarm off and by 5am we were sick of getting up and down (plus she wasnt due for 2 weeks) then when we went out at 7 she had a lovely little colt alongside her
Is this at Stoney Point?

I agree. I would never use shavings in a situation like this. I'm not fond of shavings anyway. I prefer straw.

She can do whatever she wants. We watch my mares give birth all the time for the fact of one of ours almost died...it would have if we weren't there

straw is even better
horselvr74 3 years ago
straw/hay... basically the same thing. most ppl dont use straw anymore though, thats the only reason i say hay. ^_^
TiffanitaRose 3 years ago
Straw and hay are nowhere near the same thing. Straw is for bedding, hay is for feeding.

horseygirl4456 4 years ago
Its easy to miss the birth. Wait all night, you go for 2 miniutes and you come back and there is a soggy foal in the stable.

lol Exactly. Happened to me. I was there for three full nights trying not to fall asleep and then I had to go to the bathroom and the foal was born.
HorseCrazyGirl94 4 years ago
