  • albus...just one word:respect!

  • I have nothing against any of them, but I liked more Gambon as Dumbledore.

  • I somewhat agree with the comments.. He is a Great actor no doubt, and puts allot of energy into the role ! The problem is.. that's not how Dumbledore is in the Books! His suffering goes inside and doesn't show directly.. I am not a big fan of the latest movies, and Gambon is doing a great job in a bad written franchise. If you have read the books you would know how insanely powerful Dumbledore is! The movie makes him look weak, even though he is by far stronger than even Voldemort.

  • That guy looks like a country music singer.

  • old man awwwwww hes abaslooty amazing i love the bow in his gray beard lololol xoxoxoxoxox luve ya

  • I luv tha bow in his beard :)

  • I prefer Harris because he really has the kind looks. He can speak with raspy and cracky voice which Gambon can't.Besides,he also can speak in a sentimental and emotional way just like in the "Chamber of Secret" when he introduced Fawkes to Harry and asked Death Eater to helps those who ask for help in Hogwarts before he resigned himself.Harris really portrayed real Dumbledore. But,of course I think Gambon can do better in duelling action.

  • I think I prefer Gambon as Dumbledore...nothing agaisnt Harris but I just liked Gambon as Dumbledore more.

And to those all like 'Dumbledore was different in GoF! It's Gambons fault!' it's not Gambon who decides how the character is written in!

  • Uhhh...

  • I like Gambon's Dumbledore...he had to step into a difficult position, after Harris died, so not sure why people are hating on him. His scenes with Snape, and McGonagall, are wonderful. I love all the adult (veteran) actors in the Harry Potter films.

  • @Samsis2 People are hating on him because he does not portray the real Dumbledore at all. There are no excuses for running towards Harry like a lunatic and shaking him and shouting.

  • @Velasca David Yates wanted Gambon to be a more emotional, edgy Dumbledore as the films progressed and became darker. It's the director who dictates those kinds of reactions usually and the mood of a scene, not the actors.

  • @Samsis2 Then David Yates should get a foot up his arse for it.

  • The ideal dumbledore is a combination of the two, yes. However, Harris' demeanor as dumbledore is just SO goood! He really makes you feel like dumbledore is so wise beyond all others and two steps ahead (which is what dumbledore truly is}. and Harris would have been fine in the voldemort duel, although more frail and slow they would have found a way for him to utilize magic in a way to hold of voldemort. It probably would have been a lot more badass seeing him thwart fire charms and shit.

  • i didnt like harris at all. he was so not convincing as dumbledore.. he was a fake dumbledore but gambon is the right one ;-) i love his voice

  • Um sorry but WTF if u look at the back of the first book u will that harris Looked Exactly like dumbeldore is suppose to be from the Books gambon is far too rough and nothing like the character gambon is a great actor but dont go off insulting the Real dumebledore who is and always be Richard harris michael gambon did not even look lke dumbledfore hes suppose to always wear his half moon glases and robes he almost looked like a tramp in the other films.

  • @charlieiscool1000 It is not about the looks..I don't care how Dumbledore is supposed to look or what he is supposed to wear according to the book. I liked Gambon more because Harris seemed to me like a cold man with no emotions towards Harry. In Harris's voice I felt nothing, neither in his acting..he seemed to me like an emotionless robot. And Gambon was the right opposite. In Gambon's voice you can hear that he cares for Harry. And that is why he was the real Dumbledore for me. Period.

  • You mean Full stop! FFS and i repeat gambon is nothing like the Character of dumbeldore he is a great respected actor in his own right but many Potter fans were displeased with his over the top and rather agressive portrale of dumbeldore like in the Goblet of fire when he grabs harry and shacks him that is somthnig that would Never happen in the books or should happen in the films it proves he hadn’t

bothered to really read the books and it looks like you havnt either and dont insult Harris.

  • @charlieiscool1000 No, I mean period. Why should I say full stop? I am neither British nor American so I can use whatever word I want and I like period more :-) The movies and the books are so much different, like two different worlds and two different stories, haven't you noticed? You cannot even compare them. But okay, if you like Harris, like him. I don't. And that’s it.

  • @charlieiscool1000 It's the directors who decide what the characters are like, and how they are written...well I think it is...I am not good with that stuff, but he was written in that way!

  • 3 dislikes? THANKS HERMIONE!

  • Guys Alan Rickman is in this British Poll "Your favorite man"- Help support him!

    He totally deserves this award!!

  • I really don't think Harris could have played Dumbledore like Gambon did in the later movies (no offense to either of them, they were both brilliant), but especially in OotP, when voldemort and dumbledore duel, I honestly think that Harris was too old to be able to pull of something as physically intense as that

  • Richard Harris! That's what his name was! I thought he did such an awesome job, shame the poor guy passed away =[

  • @H20Chick3389 *cough...Pottermore...cough*

  • from what i understand, Richard Harris had apparently also auditioned for Gandalf in LOTR but lost to Ian Mckellan annd it supposedly ruined their friendship. It was because of this rift that Ian Mckellan wouldnt do Dumbledore, feeling that he had taken one part from Harris it wouldn't have been right to take a second one too.

  • @lilgiggler35 Harris didnt even want the role of dumbledore! He only did it because of his grandaughter!

  • Michael Gambons voice is really fitting for the role as Dumbledore I think. He has the touch that says: "This is the real dumbledore. I am powerful and well-known".

  • Gambon gives a good choice too to get that role but i prefer the most for Sir Ian Mckellen !

  • I prefer Gambon. His portrayal that was very character driven since the 3rd movie was necessary and I don't believe Harris could've delivered in the way Gambon has.

  • @1MexJ true. i have no idea how he is in the book, but michael gambon gives him some enthusiasm and movement, instead of richard harris(rest in peace) who just stood there and talked in a soothing voice. now michael gambon's voice is quite calming as well

  • You can tell he's a great Dumbledore, because he says "I" when referring to him in the movies

  • @simonxpzla Did they keep Dumbledore's scene? Was Gambon good?

  • does anyone else noticed this... thing on his beard? XD

  • RachieandSam94... PREACH ON!!!!!

  • I always thought Michael Gambon looked exactly as I had always envisioned Dumbledore but Richard Harris had the right personality to play Dumbledore. I guess there's no compromise but Dumbledore is my favorite character so I wanted him to be cast well.

  • He has a ribbon on his beard?! LOVE DUMBLEDORE! :P

  • If he did a bad job, then the director should have pointed it out. If u don't like it, then read the book and don't watch the movie. People, stop critisizing...

(Hope it was not offensive. Just an opinion)

  • I get sick of people saying michael gambon portrayed dumbledore's character well...he's a great talent yes. But his portrayal of Dumbledore especially in book 4 wasn't precisely how the character Dumbledore was written to be.

  • @solidusrio We shouldn't expect any actor to be "precisely" like the character in the book. Acting is interpretation.

  • @caleb462 by "not precisely" I actually meant it was almost "completely unlike" the actual Dumbledore's character...of course I'm referring to the 4th movie, especially when he totally freaks out on finding harrys name in the goblet

  • @solidusrio Yeah I can understand why you and others don't like that. But overall I think Gambon has done a wonderful job. I don't think that particular scene should overshadow the rest of his performance in the series.

  • @caleb462 you are right. for instance his performance at the cave where he drank that deathly portion was phenomenal!

  • @solidusrio YES!!! The main problem I have with Gambon (the new Dumbledore) is the scene where he flips out on Harry: "DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GObLET OF FIRE!" Harris' and the book's Dumbledore would NEVER lose his cool like that -- he's too wise and controlled. But that's the director's fault, not Gambon's. As we've seen in the newer movies, Gambon can really capture that Dumbedore wisdom and mystique. But I do really miss Harris... He was just so PERFECT.

  • Dude that looks like your rEAL hair and beard lol and there were two diff. dumbledore's? lol i never knew tht

  • shit he's old

  • To each his own but I never understand why some ppl hate him - I never thought he was grumpy, only when it made sense, and besides, Dumbledore as it turns out was not comletely *nice*. I think he has more warmth and depth than RH did but that could also be that the role as with the story in general grew as it went. I love him. He is a bit crusty & I'm not surprised he didn't read the books ...not sure AR did either & you can't call him not professional.

  • He's my grandad:)

  • OMG that was SOOO sad when he died . I cried for an hour. :(

  • I love both Harris for the gentleness he brought to Dumbledore and Gambon for the quirky spirit and sense of power he brought. I didn't really like Gambon at first, in PoA, but he's gotten better and better and I absolutely love how he plays Dumbledore as very protective when it comes to Harry. Sure I wish more of the "calm, gentleness" of Harris remained in Gambon's portrayal but that's okay, Gambon has this presence and fire that completely makes up for that absence!

  • I adore his voice....... He can read me a story any day/night

  • @therealslimsutty Agreed! I absolutely love his voice. It's just so sonorous and soothing. Just the way I imagined Dumbledore to sound! Gambon for the win! XD

  • His voice! :D

  • Whereas Richard Harris portrayed the wiseman Dumbledore, Gambon plays the wise but with a hint of power in his voice, more serious Dumbledore which for books/films 3-7 is needed as the stories get darker.

  • y did they have 2 kill dumbledore and then strait away in the next 1 kill hedwig, dobby and mad eye :(

  • Michael Gambon - from Prisoner of Azkaban to Half-Blood Prince - portrayed very well... I'm sad he died.

  • Comment removed

  • I want Michael Gambon to read the harry potter book to me! would be epic

  • He has A GREAT BIG BUSHY BEARD!

  • Michael Gambon all the way. Best Dumbledore you could ask for.

  • i dont know why people are debating about who is the better actor i didnt really notice anything diffrent (that was probaly because i was young about 6 or 7 and i didnt know that Richard Harris had died) i did notice that dumbledore did change a little though but nothing major anyway rip rich and good luck to gambon in the future:)

  • I don't know why so may people don't like his portrayal, he's had the character right from the third film, the only time it was a little off was in Goblet of Fire and that can be blamed on the director. He started with the more peaceful and eccentric Dumbledore in Prisoner of Azkaban and went on to the distant warrior type in Half Blood Prince. This is exactly what happened in the books.

  • I like how there are "2" Dumbledores, that way, when I read the books, If I want a happy Dumbledore I'll think Harris, but if I want yelling, I'll think Gambon.

  • I believe the perfect Dumbledore is Harris and Gambon combined. Harris is great at portraying Dumbledore as a witty and sincere person. Gambon is great at the powerful and stong part of Dumbledore, and he really captures the intensity. I personally don't have any problem with either of the actors. And stop insulting the actors, I would really like to see YOU play Dumbledore.

  • @ThePastelPanda Your damn right! I feel the same about that :) Let me finish your idea: Harris is the wise, old man who is loved by all xD and Gambon is the fighter and strong wizard whos feared by the evil forces :-)

    Your words are really wise,Panda^^

  • @YoungPhoenix3191 Thank you very much! :D

  • @ThePastelPanda Challenge Accepted.

  • @ThePastelPanda You're right. But remember: Without the viewers, the actors is nothing.

  • the acting of Michael Gambon in The Prince is equal to or better than Richard Harris

  • I think Gambon was a very good Dumbledore, the only movie where I as kind if "eh" about him was the 5th. Harris was great, perfect for the role, don't get me wrong, but that doesn't mean Gambon is terrible.

  • Harris was such a better Dumbledore. Michael Gambon's Dumbledore always seemed mad, and he was always yelling. And he's way too energetic. Harris acted more wise like Dumbledore in the books.

  • Imagine just being this guy.

Fuck every day would be amazing.

  • Richard Harris and none other!!!!

  • God..

  • Has anyone else noticed that the atmosphere of the series changed after the second movie?

  • @jumpajulia

Yeah....the books changed so uhh...yeah lol

I would not expect ANY series of books to keep the same tone much less a movie series.

If you're making movies about a group of kids who systematically suffer great psychological injuries along with endless peril, the tone is bound to change.

  • @jumpajulia Yes. Dumbledore was the rock in the 1st and 2nd movies. He remained calm when no one else did and was very wise. Michael Gambon has made Dumbledore a frightening character who is very cold. He completely ruins the movies for me. I cringe when he's on screen.

  • @NikkiBay8 me too..

  • @jumpajulia yes

  • @jumpajulia yes the trio grew up so much between part 2 and 3 that in part 3 they looked too much like adults and onwards that special feeling of part 1 and 2 was also not there.

  • @jumpajulia what do you mean by that?

  • @nerad1994 I mean that after the 2nd movie the movies seemed darker

  • @jumpajulia Absolutely, and for the better I think. Partly it's because the books get somewhat darker and the characters are growing up. Also, the directing style changed. Chris Columbus, who did the first two films, is a director who tends to do light-hearted material - Home Alone, Ms. Doubtfire, etc.

  • @jumpajulia maybe becuz the actor for dumbledore changed after the second one after a tragical incident

  • @jumpajulia that's cuz Alfonso took over !!!!!!!!!!!

  • @jumpajulia Yes, that's when shit got serious.

  • @jumpajulia I would have said it changed after the third one

  • @jumpajulia

the director changed after the second movie from chris columbus to david yates :) maybe thats why

    i agreeeeeeeeeeeeeee ,

  • @jumpajulia yes. so very much.

  • @jumpajulia Well done.

  • @jumpajulia The atmosphere changed because Chris colombus directed the 1st and 2nd movie and because the whole castle changed, in the first and second movies the castle looked way different for example Hagrid's hut was close to the castle not down a mountain like in the third movie lol and the whomping willow was close to the castle as well not like the third movie that it looks like its miles away lol

  • @jumpajulia absolutley, i suspect that was because Chris Columbus left, it would be interesting to see how the movies would be if they carried on with that style...also it's not really major but I wish they would have varied the color scheme in the movies a bit...especially with Yates' films they all seemed to be blue tinted from the movie to the promo material

  • @jumpajulia it was really noticeable. and so is a lot of british films. the atmosphere became rather dark and gloomy. Gambon and Harris are the only actors who truly can only pull off Albus Dumbledore.

  • @jumpajulia i'd be shocked if anyone hadn't noticed. before the third film people weren't dying all the time

  • Anyone who calls himself/herself a true Harry Potter fan (and I am talking about the books) must agree that this man should have never dared to play Dumbledore's role. Sir Richard Harris will never be forgotten.

  • @DotCheeseLouise what if another group forms and calls themselves TRUE fans - and yet they think the opposite - that gambon should have been dumbledore all along ? :D

  • @Forseliz I'm sorry, but if you really know you're Harry Potter books, you have to realize that Dumbledore is not a mad man who jumps Harry and almost strangles him in the fourth movie. And if Michael Gambon declares that : "Well, I don’t have to play anyone really. I just stick on a beard and play me, so it’s no great feat. I never ease into a role – every part I play is just a variant of my own personality. I’m not really a character actor at all."

  • @DotCheeseLouise I might mention about the quote...Michael is notorious for misleading or bs'ing interviewers. In my opinion, Michael brought more authority that was needed for Dumbledore's character, especially considering the film series was maturing in tone over time and thus playing him as a kind, whimsical old man might not have fit too well. That being said, I think both men played the part appropriately when it was needed to be played so.

  • @Forseliz You tell me.. can Dumbledore be played by someone who states that? Playing Dumbledore sould be a privilege and every aspect of the character should be taken into consideration. Otherwise, the actor shows only disrespect to the books and fans. Is that fair to any of us?

  • @DotCheeseLouise Well lets not forget its a movie - the characters are INDEED diffrent, and so is the story. So we cant put allot of blame for Gambon, without putting on the entire movie building. I read all 7 books and all 7 of them differ for the 7- to be movies. Gambon is a great actor but i respect your opinion for sayign that he doesnt fit into the role. Its just that neither does the book fit in the movie.

  • @DotCheeseLouise Playing Dumbledore... a privilege?! What are you smoking? Yeah, it's a fun character, but compared to the weighty, intelligent material Sir Gambon has handled, it's just a fairytale character. It's a PRIVILEGE to play Othello. To play Macbeth. Jesus Christ, Dumbledore isn't that deep of a character in comparison.

  • @Forseliz Yeah ... they like you have their opinions ... they can state whatever and so can you.

  • Gambon played dumbledore as a angry grumpy man in gof

  • he is just brilliant

  • shit i thought the clip was in the movie, his voice is awesome ^^

  • I like his voice xD

  • you can see the gay in his eyes

  • The best !

  • Gambon is too grumpy and mean to be Dumbledore!

  • @stroberimanisrasanya .. well in 7th reveals that dumbledore is total asshole .

  • Guys stop bickering over Witch dumbledore is better

Micheal Gambom is an amazing actor and dumbledore

Richard haris R.I.P was an brillent actor and dumbledore

    Theyre are both terrific Dumbledores

  • The main reason I don't like Gambon as Dumbledore is b/c his vision of Dumbledore is not JKR's vision of Dumbledore, the one we all know and love. I really and still do dislike him in both POA and GOF - especially the scene after Harry's name came out of the Goblet, where he acts more like Moody by pushing Harry and shouting at him. But he's better in Ootp and HBP.

  • @Ember121Scorpio That was not at all gambon's fault my dear. It was not him who chose himself to be bad-tempered in GOF when harry's name came out of it, these things are chosen by the directors and producers i guess. H e just played his part on what was told to him. And to be Sir Gambon is perfect for being Dumbledore

  • but you must admit: albus has style!

  • Gmabon looks more like Gandalf, Harris looks more like the one from the book.

  • I am sorry but as cool an actor as Michael Gambon is he is not a good Dumbledore. Dumbledore is calm and ancient and majestic. He's whimsical, ingenious, and almost celestially strong. Everyone loves or fears him. Michael Gambon's portrayal captures none of these. He's simply not the character; he doesn't have the right presence. And I say that not out of hate for Michael Gambon but out of love for the character and frustration that Richard Harris wasn't around to finish the job.

  • @dekugoron I think thats just what u picture dumbledore to be. i agree that richard harris fits ur description, but i can't really imagine him pulling off the more humourous side of dumbledore. sure, dumbledore was powerful and mighty, but he also has his side where he's a bit quirky and comical. richard harris played a good quiet and passive, but gambon is closest to the dumbledore i picture. but everyone has their own opinions and point of view, so i respect your view completely.

  • michael gambon may not play the dumbledore from the books, but he makes dumbledore a very interesting and more REALISTIC character. hes one of britains finest actors, so people should really just shut up. he was incredible in "the half blood prince".

  • Dumbledore is the best! Genius, funny, and the Only One He Ever Feared! Go Dumbledore!

  • HE DOSENT LOOK LIKE DUMBLEDORE WUD OUT DA MUSTACHE

  • I think he did a better job than Richard Harris perhaps because he understands that Dumbledore isn't just the wise old man type, he's quirky and hip as well, and powerful. Harris was very quiet and passive as Dumbledore, which is one side of him, but Gambon brings out those parts in the books where Dumbledore flexes his muscles and you can't help but respect him.

  • @TheLegendaryMoja

Well such scenes didn't really appeared that often, in my Opinion Gabons act was totally off.

It had NOTHING to do with the Dumbledore we all knew. Well, at least he got better until the end, but I will never forgive him for the Goblet of Fire, never!

  • @Kill0rbAg GOF was the director's fault. Every character was off in GOF.

  • @Kill0rbAg Must agree about GOF - he was ferocious in that! Just...a mess sadly :(

  • I liked Michael Gambon more as Dumbledore than Richard Harris!

  • Brilliant actor probley my fav actor in the whole show :) HAWKRUKS=7or8

  • but i dont like to read!

  • why was he already dying

  • why did snape kill him?? so sad

  • @Aaron2779 if you read the last book

    you'll now why

  • read the seven book and you will understand.

  • He is a great wizzerd!!

Better than Cornelis Fudge, Better than Minerva MCGonnagall, and BETTER than Voldmort.

Snape killing Dumbledore, because Dumbledore ask him. . . Snape, the good person, Dumbledore, the great Wizzerd.

  • plz dont screw up the story for those who haven't read the 7th book....

  • @papan1990 The 7th book came out years ago. People should have read it by now.

  • @chellycat14 she wrote it years ago but it came out in '07 or '08.

But yeah, im pretty sure thats enough time to read it.

  • my friend. no one understand.

  • Dumbledore is my hero!!!!!! :D

  • I want the dude who plays Gandalf in Lord of the Rings to play Aberforth Dumbledore!

  • you mean sir ian mckellan?? how did you not know that!?

  • right

  • I don't understand why people make such a big deal about Michael Gambon not reading the HP books. The late Richard Harris who played Dumbledore in the first and second movies didn't read them either and yet no one criticizes him for it. Gambon's portrayal in both the third and fourth outings suffered due to poor direction but he did much better in the fifth movie although not perfect. In the sixth film however, I thought he was absolutely flawless and no longer played the character as a grump.

  • I actually find Michael Gambon (and Richard Harris') portrayal of Albus quite inspired. It is just the focus of the books that change...sometimes Albus, the character, brings something to fore that is relevant for Harry...depends on the issue, and of course, with OOTP, he ignores him entirely. I never saw him as a grump but, rather, as a typical 150 year old man!

  • @Zepp900 wait there were two dumbledores???? i didnt kno tht?

  • @Cakeypie13 yeah the one in the first two movies died

  • @Zepp900 Nobody criticized Richard Harris because he was spot-on with the character. Michael Gambon is way off and took a wise, intelligent, calm, respectful man and turned him into a cold, violent, screaming asshole. Although, like you said, I don't believe it's just him. I blame the directors, as well. :-/

  • @Zepp900 i thought he always always great, but nevermind, i read on wikipedia that he likes to mess with the press and actually has said before he has read the books, so i think he was just screwing around with people.

  • @Zepp900 i guess no one criticizes richard harris because he's dead..

  • @Zepp900 Maybe thats because Richard Harris played the character very close to the way Rowling wrote the character. Michael didnt. Especially the scene were Dumbledore takes grabs Harry in HP 4 in desperation or something really annoys me. In the Harry Potter books Dumbledore never would have lost it or touch a student.

  • Hmmm... I knew something was missing from Dumbledore, then I saw it! He's missing his mustache!

  • Only jokin lol I was with my mate nd she dared me to pretend I was in harry potter and knew him

Lol random but i did think it fit well when I found out he was gay and still rip lol and Im gonna miss watching the films withought dumbledore cause he was such a warm and friendly character x

  • Rip albus dumbledore lol

When I found out he was gay I was like that dits Im gonna

Miss him on set he was such a lovely man

  • man, Albus was defenitey ambitious and manipulating enough to be a slytherin. :)

  • Yeah Harris reminded me way to much of merlin or Gandolf, I like Gambon because he seems more like the Dumbledore I pictured. Both Dumbledore's had their pro's and con's. Like I didn't like when Gambon was yelling at Harry in GOB, but that was the writers fault, not Gambons.

  • Michael Gambon is 6'0''. Is that what you call "kinda short"?

  • he was an amazing dumbledore, i thought he portrayed it well, as a more fatherly man. like you knew you could depend on him. i preferred michael gambon.

  • @twilightlover378 Yes, me to :)

  • Richard Harris wasnt that good at playing Dumbledore, I think Michael Gambon is a way better Dumbledore.

  • agree

  • Cool! I am glad you agree. =)

  • his voce...its soo deep

but arg =[ y did he have 2 die!

  • I think Richard captures the grandfather, Merlin, protector of good vibe within Dumbledore, especially with his half-moon spectacles and twinkling blue eyes and especially his height.

Michael Gambon is much shorter than I expected for Dumbledore which ruins it a bit because he is described as tall, and the deeper voice is harsher and takes away any gentle tone to Dumbledore's character. He's a great actor but I much preferred Richard Harris.
