In this talk prof. Damasio seems to introduce a kind of black box concept, giving it a huge explanatory role. I think a bottom-up approach is to be preferred: let´s explain how different (semi-)independent mental functions came about be through an evolutionary process, and try to imagine how all of this accumulated into this full fledged sense of self and consciousness. But maybe his new book is in fact in alignment with this approach...
