The M3 is a 3.0L inline 6. V4's are nonexistant, all 4 cylinders are inline 4's. Unless you're driving a subaru, which have horizontally opposed 4 cylinders, or H4's.

this is an e30 M3 and what i meant by V4 is 4 valves per cylinder. it's a 2302 cc 4-cylindered, 192 bhp at 6750 rpm.

however the e36 has an inline 6 2990 cc making 286 bhp at 7000 rpm or 3201 cc making 316.5 bhp at 7400 rpm depending on which e36 version, 1992 or 1996.

@sleepisyummy there were some cars with v4 engines earlier like alot of Saab´s and they vere vey sucesful in motorsports but since the inline 4 is much cheaper to manufacture they knocked out the v4´s.
